Anyone know if these hulls are capable of handling rough water?

I think that the Riot is one of the best rough water handling hulls out there . I've been in KaptainKirk's many times and he will probably chip in here and agree with me ( since he owns one !! )
Very good boat in the rough ( I think better than the STV hulls ) ..... providing you know how to drive one.

in some serious rollers with no problem......passed Bill Gohr "once" at triple digits through some 5 footers and house size holes.....of course he said I was lucky:) and the wife was shocked it was such a nice ride through that stuff!!

Once you know how to drive one....you will ride in others boats and think they don't know how to drive....especially when ya get wet in theres!

The phone with him as I typed.....he would remember it as he just whooped on a Jet drive...thats how I slingshotted him:) (he was paying attention to the jet so I had a mile head start)then he pulled along side and pointed ahead....I turn to look at a few 40' carvers coming and turn back and hes gone and stopped and left me out there too deal with the carvers at 100+ by myself:( wife kicked my ass that day:)

I had a Riot and found the ride to one of the best 20' boats in rough conditions. It is too bad they are not still making them. Great boats. Light, fast and well built.

1490# with my fat ass in it and 3 gallons of gas!

It weighs 1220 with 1/2 tank gas,a big cooler and a 3 lit. bridgeport looper. I honestly believe that these boats are easyer to make extremly quick to 110 mph than any other hull. This is at least in part due to the fact that the boat starts to "fly" at 30mph. VERY EFECIENT. The problem with them is that they become deadly at 117 mph[according to the builder ]. I tend to believe him. Also this is not an easy boat to drive well even at lesser speeds. It will take many attempts before you can make full passes at will, especially if you use a 20'' shaft mota. These boats are much friendlier with a 15''. I had to cut the splash well out of it in order to gain clearance for the hyd. steering cylinder but without hyd. steering you do'nt have to. These hulls are a RIOT!!! :D :D

I always kinda figured that he built less than 100 Riots, but I do'nt know for sure. He had 4 or 6 differant models from about 12' to 22'. From what I've seen they are well built and there is no wood in the boat.

What custom high intake are you talking about???

Talk To Marv Jorgenson At Chopper City Sports.he Blew Over In One At 120mph.i've Heard They Are Extremely Stable At Speed Up To Triple Didgits But After That Get Real Loose And Actually Gain Speed(or Lift)when You Let Off The Gas At Those Speeds

I would love to own one someday. I think they are the nicest looking pickle fork but I never saw one for sale close to me.

right after 104 it gets real loose....you have to drive it like a pad boat I have been told.
Also heard over 350hp and triple digits it gets real exciting I hear.

Been deliberating 500hp....but everyone is trying to talk me out of it.
I guess if ya keep rollin da dice you will go over sooner or later:)

I can do 104 instantly with da wife and I and a cooler by the end of the marina.
Acceleration is great isn't it.

Also never let off the gas it will go over! I been straight up and down twice....once from chopping the throttle and once from coming around a corner inda river with the wind gust coming at me and hitting it hard witda trim up and a bow lifting raker prop.....I never ran a raker again!!
I love Merc. Cleavers and et's onda boat and of course Yammi Drags.
I also run different gears for draggin then cruzin....The Riot like 2:1 inda short track.

Kirk ..... you should keep the Riot and give new life. Mount a single Allison bucket in the middle (switch to center steer and in doing so your body would be about 8" lower aswell because the seat would be inset in the boat and not on the floor ... **** thats good for about 2-5mph due to the fact your so frigginn tall) new light weight rear seat/cowling and throw on a 4"set'back/jack. I'm sure with the power you now have you'll run 115 all day and the weight/positioning could aid in a litle ET !!! ???

Yammer :)

This Riot is a '96 (boat&motor) and has been in storage for over five years and has a total of ONLY 17 HOURS on it! The gearcase dosn't even have a scratch on it. A friend of mine is buying it in the next few days.

I'm almost positive the boat was sold new by Baker Marine. I'm sure Sam would remember this boat.

Id say that is very probbable especially if you run a cleaver. I tried one once that lifted the transom so much that I could'nt steer the boat while accelerating. When you chop the power with the stern elevated and the boat runing fairly flat, the stern settles & the bow raises. Not a good situation with a lot of boats and especially bad with a Riot. These things pack plenty of air at speed and certainly do'nt need to have the nose up to do it.

I'm not trying to be a wise *ss or nuthin but be sure you tell your friend to respect that boat....there is a deffinant learning curve involved. Even guys that have a lot of tunnel boat experiance can almost never just get in one & drive it well. These boats are more trim sensitive than anything that 99% of hot rod outboarders have ever been in. When in doubt trim it down. That is a pretty Riot-have fun with it and be carefull. You must learn how it will react to various wind/wave conditions. Oh..yeah......when he gets it figured out.........tell him if he wants his doors blowd off by a poor old worn out O.M.C. tell him to come to Michigan & it can be arranged!! :)

Ya the Riot is deffinately the tuffest tunnel to drive in my opinion. Its almost like taming a wild animal.
Its funny seeing people watch a guy who knows how to drive his Riot "that guy is crazy" ................."this guy is nuts" .................... !!!!! He just knows his hull. Then again I've seen a few guys that are just to stupid and will get bit sooner or later.

Nice boat above.

Yes, I remember that boat. It ran really well, but I don't think the gentleman ran it at all.

There's a knack to running the Riot and it really involves trimming it more than you think up until about 80 MPH, then slowly tapping the down button as you get going faster. The fastest I ever ran mine was 116 and that was with a 2.5EFI with 32CC heads on it (no other mods). That was with a 30" Mercury cleaver that John Mazar had reworked. It was the fastest prop by far on that boat. The boat typically is easier to drive with props that have less blade area in them. We sold them with 29" Mazco REs because they carried 3 or 4 people so well, but with one person, I always ran a cleaver or a Mach Patriot which is essentially a high raked version of the Yamaha Drag prop. That worked the best for all around use.

The first boat we had was a center steer boat - REALLY light. With a stone stock 225 Evinrude, it would run over 100 with a big enough prop.

Most people have a hard time in the midrange with the boat because they don't trim it out enough, then they get into trouble on the high end because they don't trim the boat down - that was Marv's problem. He was too high then he let off. Any boat running a cleaver (and he was running a through hub adapter as well to try and surface the gearcase) is going to drop the transom when they let off, so that was no big shock. He could have run all the way down the river the way he was, but when he let off, that was it.

As for setback, the less setback the better when it comes to handling. We always sold them with no setback or a 4" LandNSea hydraulic jackplate. Mine was the first with a Short Shaft and it was a LOT harder to drive than the one I had before it with the 20" motor and no setback. Kirk's boat was the easiest one I ever drove. That boat hardly porpoised or did anything weird.

Who has the molds to the Riot right now? I always liked this hull.

Sam Baker

They're still up at Rapid Craft, but they're junk. Best bet would be to pop a mold off of one. Here's one instance where somebody like Lightning would come in handy. There are a couple of things we would have changed to get rid of the transition issue. The boat was originally designed by Eliminator as the Scorpion for Jet use. When my Dad went to Eliminator in Shawano and redesigned it, it was mostly changes to make it turn. The change at Rapid Craft was in the deck to move the seat back a little bit to help it get through the midrange a little easier, but I know if he had more time and resources, he would have left the dash further forward and put just a bit more pinch in the tunnel.
