View Full Version : best way to clean up a prop edge

i just picked up a merc laserII. the leading eedge has a few minor nicks in it. i could run it as is but would like to clean it up. it dosent look like it has ever been touched.

I work on aircraft for a living. We use Jeweler's Files for really fine work on aircraft props. Sears sells them in a small kit. You can do really fine and tiny work with them.

If you rev your motor high and go fast a filed prop can ruin your gearcase. props are balanced and filing on blades changes that. Like running and unbalanced tire.

agreed.. if you file them down take the time and $$$ and have the ballence rechecked and fix it right so things dont get tweeked.

i see. what does it cost to have a prop balanced? i may just leave it alone.

last prop i had deburred and re tuned cost 75.00

If you have the patience, I would suggest using " stones " to do the dressing work... Files can and will leave metallic deposits that will make the worked area become rusty...

I used these round felt like pads on a pneumatic rorary grinder which are used for deburing at a drill pipe shop. MY buddy got them from the big store.
