View Full Version : Poppet Valve Carrier Question
I just got a new poppet valve, but the carrier seems to be to big in diameter, even though the part number is right.
Does it fit all of the way inside of the orfice, or does it sit with the flanged part sitting against the inner orfice. If it sits all of the way in, the one that they sent is too big. Does anyone have photos?

To fill the hole in the block, you need a 65848 carrier and a 64872 grommet.
Hey,
That is exactly the parts that I have, but the carrier is too big. Does it fit all of the way in, or sit on the outside edge? Does the flanged part fit toward the engine or away from the engine?
The diagram on Mercury Parts Express doesn't show it.

I'll try and take a picture tonight.

The first photo is with the grommet installed, the second is with the carrier in the grommet.
My engine cowling said ( before I removed the decals and painted it ) that it is a Mercury 150 XR-2 Blackmax 2.0. The cowling fits perfect! It is a 6 cylinder, long shaft. It has 148 psi compression on all cylinders. It runs great, sounds great, and is very strong!
My poppet valve engine hole (area) is smaller than yours?
The poppet valve carrier that I just ordered (65848) is too big!
If this is really a Blackmax XR-2 150, The carrier is supposed to fit!
I have no data plate ( Serial Number ) on my engine. It's not that I can't find it, The serial number plate is gone. I have looked on the swivel, heads, and everywhere, many times, just hoping to find it!
Could this engine be a bigger one or smaller one?
I wish that I could figure out what is going on with it! It is getting very difficult to buy parts for it now! :(
Here is a photo!
I made the Decals, but I don't know if it is what it says it is or not! This is getting very confusing!

Post a pic of your poppet area with the cover off.

The carrier that fits inside the block is staked in place. Did you replace it for a reason? Usually they don't go bad.
Transomstand, Thanks for the photos! ;)
Hey Richard,
My engine came with no poppet valve, carrier, or thermostats!
Are you saying that you have to tap the carrier in like a bearing? Tap it in with a hammer and blunt object and it stays stationary and never moves? If so, this is the reason that I didn't think it fits correctly.
I thought that the carrier moved in and out with the rest of the poppet valve, or that something in the engine was missing.

The carrier and grommet are stationary, and yes, you have to tap it in. Sounds like you've got the idea now.

If you want a true picture of how it all fits together, go to Mercury Parts Express website. It's a good resource of exploded diagrams and parts. You will notice that the poppet valve is attached to poppert housing along with a spring retainer and diaphram. Those are the parts that actually move. Can't tell you why there is no carrier motor. Are you sure it's there and is just discolored to the point where you don't see it. I got fooled once that way. There should be no reason why the carrier would be removed unless there was some catastrophic engine problem.
Richard,
Some guy , as I am told, was racing this motor on a pickle fork boat before I got it. When I got it there was no fuel pump, starter solenoid, thermostats, poppet, or carrier, but the engine has 148 psi compression, and runs really great and sounds real mean. The cowling says 150, but I think that there a lot of mods that have been done to it over the years.
It does not have a carrier at all. I went to Mercury Parts Express, but it only shows how to put together the entire poppet assembly. It does not show you inside of the engine where the carrier goes.
Since I didn't have another motor to go by, I was trying to put the entire poppet assembly in the motor without setting the carrier in place with a hammer and bearing tool.
I didn't think that I needed to beat anything with a hammer to assemble it correctly. I thought it was like installing thermostats or spark plugs, so I was goofing around, and very pissed off, with it for most of the evening.
I finally got fed up and thought that they must have sent the wrong part until Transomstand, here on this site, sent the cool photos for me to see inside of the engine compartment where the carrier goes! ;)
Now that I know what's going on, I will install it the correct way this weekend.
Thanks Guys! :D
