I got my hands on a second 78/79 Johnson 235.

and some of you may question WHY :)
but i have the universal answer ( IT WAS FREE )

the problem is that this thing has been sittin for 3 years with the same gas in it , and nothing done to it to prepare for storage.
It ran great just prior to it being parked this way.

What kind of uphill battle will this be to get it running well again ?
Rebuild ?/ carb cleaning and some new gas ?/ Sell it for scrap ?

Thanks Dwayne

bajass235, damm man i hate to see a man suffer , tell you what i will DOUBLE what you paid for that thing.
serious build the carbs oil the cylinders, lube the starter so your neighbors wont think you are raping your cat when you try and spin it over. good gas and water let it eat.

ps i will even pick it up!!!

If you guys like these old motors how about my 235 rude drag motor in the motor forum? This is a running (screaming) piece. Make me an offer! Thanks

Cheap insurance, the impeller blades probably won't last long after sitting up that long, and have probably taken a set.

I would go with cleaning the carbs. I have gotten away (on mine) with just cleaning them and replacing nothing. If you do not replace any parts, make sure you check the needle and seats for wear (appears on the needle itself). Most of these carb's parts are/were availible separate, so you need not buy the kits if you do not want to. I would blow some engine tune and air through the fuel lines too. You might check the compression and ignition fire before starting also.

A good suggestion in changing the water pump. I would change the gear case oil too before putting it into service.

Note: the '77 and '78 crossflows were transition years. A lot of parts will not exchange with the '79 and later motors.

Regardless of what year.....a free motor.....you lucky sucker!:D Where is the line?;)
