I am looking for a CLE lower for an Allison. I see lower's for sale with 2 holes, either top or bottom, and I see 4 hole unit's. Does it make a difference? Looks like holes on bottom would be better for water supply? Also, if a CLE is designed with low water pickup and nose cone, then what is the reasoning for adding a nose cone to a nose cone?
thanks

The CLE's through the 80's and I believe early 90's had 2 holes. The newer units had 4 holes. The 2 holes are allegedly faster:)

Some add a cone to a CLE to increase it's blowout speed by increasing the aspect ratio (length to bullet diameter) of the case.

See the 2 hole CLE is faster cause it is designed to run on that yankee water it goes so fast it only needs 2 hole to flow enough water to cool the motor. The 4 hole is for us slow guy's down in the south cause you know that slower water don't go through the cone as fast so it needs more volume. :D

Really the two hole CLE'sa had a water flow problem. The way the water enters the holes and the 2 holes combine to the larger channel up to the side plates. Mercury had a hard time making those holes all meet in the same place and on some the resriction was big time. Alot of guy's have put after market cones on those lower units to increase the water flow.
Either one is short and and would be more blow prone than the longer unit with a cone or a sportmaster.

Greg Moss,
thanks for the info, if the CLE's have a blow out problem how about nose cone/LWP on my std lower? This is a 93 175 XRi motor on a Allison XB2002. I have read some people say a CLE is faster than a sportmaster on an Allison but if my lower (modified) would be suitable then I could send it off and save a little cash..
thanks

Gearcases are a lot like props...you never know until you try them. If you like the way your case handles now, I would not send it out with hopes of speed increases..it could very well come back slower or handle poorly. Try one first.

v-bottoms typically run better with a longer coned case like a sportmaster, coned cle, or coned 200/xr6/xr4 case. If you're running a 2002 allison and want to hang onto some cash, your best bet is to probably have your 175 lower coned (tooters or bobs).

thanks to all for the valuable info and oppinions..sure helps a novice..I decided to try mod's to my lower, and save a little..it's a stock 200 gearcase and is in excellant condition, sent it to Titus..I at least needed LWP for my XB2002 so I could raise it up...
again, thanks to everyone

I think Tooter is out of the cone business.

Just as well I guess. He did acceptable work on mine, but I heard quality control and customer service started to suffer towards the end.

Hey Fly, do you have the same advice for trying phalluses?
