Which of the Pennzoil oils is preferred for the 2.5 Mercs , Premium Plus or the Full Synthetic ? Drum prices vary drastically so I want to buy the right one . Motors will be used for long river runs as well as friendly racing . Thanks , Tom .

Use the 100% synthetic only. I have used it in my boat since I bought it. Would not trust the synthetic blend.

Agreed Foley....100% synthetic. If you decide to and want a few to go in on it let me or Joe know. I know there are a few others over here that want to run it as well.

Forgive my ignorance, but are you talking about putting automotive motor oil in the lower unit of a Merc outboard? I have been using the Quicksilver product in my pre-Bridgeport 2.4. Would I be better off with a full synthetic automotive product? If so, what weight / viscousity??

I buy my Pennzoil 100% synthetic from oil-store.com for $69.89 for a case of four one gallon bottles. Shipping from PA to FL is about $12.00 which makes it about the same price as Walmart (if I can find it). I order it over the internet and turnaround time is 4 days max. They don't list 55 gallon drums on their website, but I bet if you call them, they carry it, as they appear to be a big distributor.

Drum price yields about 18.00 a gallon , not worth the saga for me to have to keep it clean and have it at my shop .

You still mix about 32/1 ..or about 1 quart for evey 8 gallons? with the 100% Pennzoil syn right?

ShoreThang

Does it come in different mix ratios, or is it the same as Merc/Quicksilver?? 50/1, I believe...

We use regular Quicksilver at 32:1 to break in all motors we build ! I suggest 32:1 for motors turning > 7500 rpms and 40:1 <7500 rpms ( NO LEANER ) on any motor with pistons 3 1/2" and larger .......

Would it be the same for an older 2.4 (pre Bridgeport) and would you recommend switching over at this late in the game?

What would be the process to change over to synthetic 2 stroke. Does the old 2 stroke need to be flushed out of the entire system or just run low and start adding the synthetic.

Most all retail sold 100 % syn oils say that it is OK to mix with petrolium when converting BUT my son just lost a very good running 5.0 ford race motor by mixing Mobil 1 and Royal Purple. It klotted snapped an oil pump shaft in the middle of a pass , at the time of inspection the oil came out in Huge clumps and the oil filter weight approx 5 lbs clumped solid . Amzoil had a clumping problem several years ago with thier oil in thier own containers . Piss poor QC if you ask me ! I would run the oil you have out to very low then wash out and then convert !I see nothing prudent in taking a chance with a motor to save $5.00 worth of petrolium oil. Hell pour it on the fence row and kill the grass ! Or slowly pour it in your car or truck fuel , makes a good top oil at about 1 to 2 oz per 20 gals...

My opinion !

Jay, I would think long and hard about using Royal Purple. I have an interesting
oil test I could E-mail you if you'd like. Regards, Steve

I have a close friend with a 90 HP Yamaha that has an aluminum flat that FISHES. We work shift work and he is 100 FT from the bay ( Gulf of Mexico ) I have had that motor on Pennzoil 100 % syn from Walley World for 9 years and hes counts how many times he fishes a year and last year he went fishing 143 times ( Honest Truth )This motor has not as much as burped but 1 time and it was that the salt water eat a hole in the water cover on the head and I replaced the head and the bores look like they would go another 9 years !

No brag , just fact and I'm not a Pennzoil salesman I could care less what you burn !
