I'm looking at buying a 2.4 Merc...I've got some pictures of the crank. Unfortunately, I can't look at it in person. The engine's been open for a few months I guess (been in a rubbermade container in a shed), and the crank looks like it's got a little rust on it - probably surface rust that would easily clean up. Let me know what ya'll think of it - if it'll be a problem.

Unless I was getting it awfully cheap I'd pass . You can have the crank micro polished but if the neddles has rusted to the rods and crank I'd pass !

Just my opinion !

Jay,
How much would it run to get the crank polished? Most of the rust looks like a film, but there looks like there may be some pitting too. If it's pitted can you do anything with it? Guess that's assuming you don't have problems with the needles. Thanks for the help....

If the needles are ok how much would the rust you can see affect things?

if the journals are perfectly fine and just some surface rust on the weights you should be fine. just clean it up real good.i had my good crank sitting in the house and it had a little rust on the weights. good luck!

the shop out on the west coast is outboard crank corp. They recond. boat motor cranks and do it for a reasonable price. After the recond. the cranks are not real good for super high performance use. This is due to having a new layer of material plasma welded onto the original bearing surface of the crank and thus is not as "sound " as an unwelded crank. The cranks are how ever very good for regular type use. If you are not going to run the motor over @6200rpms it will work just fine. they also come with a one year warranty. You should also check the rod surfaces for rust pitting. If these are also bad like jay said the motor would have to be real cheap to make it worth it to get everything reconditioned. Later, drastic.

Before you have the crank welded, I would give give CY a call at NEECA.
His approach is to preserve the hardened surface of your crank...
He also has a REAL warranty, Here's his web site http://www.neecaprecisions.com/why_neeca_
and his number is (860) 683-1317. He's will share with you his years of Metallurgists knowledge. I had a 2.5 crank recently done, his customer service is 10 out of 10.

I dont think they are the same company, they each use two different approach to repair cranks.
NEECA does not weld onto a crank... CY will utilize the original factory hardened surface. It worth a call, if nothing else to become informed on the different process used to repair cranks.
