I presume you were using your new gear for the shot's you captured of the misfortunate wreck.

Does the Nikor lens have IS or was the f stop set high enough that it was no concern given the lighting and free hand shooting when you burst the shot?

Was it a free hand shot from a boat?

Lamar, same question and what lens did you use.

Thanks guys for any input. I'm trying to figure out what 300mm lens to get for my Canon Digital Rebel SLR 300D.

Kevin,

I had a 100-400 4-5.6L lens for those shots. I usually shoot in manual mode but for some reason that day light was giving me fits and I was shooting in Av mode at 5.6. It is an IS lens but I rarely use it for action photos.

As far as a 300 lens there are lots of them. I have a Tamron 75-300 that I will sell you cheap if you are interested.

Kevin,

The Nikkor (Nikon) version of Canon's "IS" is "VR". Nikkor has many VR lenses - I have an 80-400 VR that's new.

For the STV shots, I used a 70-300ED F4-5.6 Nikkor non-VR lens, handheld. I think I was in manual mode, F5.6 at 1/1600 sec., ISO 400. You can get great results with most lenses, but you'll need a very steady hand and/or a monopod for telephoto - especially at anything over 200MM.
