Im on my secound, first was a 1978 J-10 wish i still had that one, and now im driving 2000 TJ. Had som problems at first with the TJ thanks to chryslers quality, but sicne i got the bugs out and out some mods on it it runs great.
I have had Jeeps for the last 15 years. Have had a couple CJ5, several CJ7, and currently have an all fibreglass CJ7 with V8 and a 1979 J20 project that is barely half done and maybe gonna be for sale. Love em. Hard to kill. Good friend just bought a new one and another friend is almost done building one.

I have a grand wagoneer that I have been slowly putting back together over the last few years as funds permit. I had one about 10 years ago and kicked myself for ever selling it. FInally got another one, but right now everytime I add tranny fluid, it bleeds all over the floor DOH! I thik this is a problem LOL

 what happened to the Magnum ????
Talon2.5
03-18-2005, 05:09 AM
i sent the magnum down the road
if ya look at the attached pic......check out the headlight design, the turn signal is above the lowbeam headlight and they have a chrome bar seperating the 2 and the top of the lowbeam headlamp is cut off from being a full circle well....
when you head into the hills at night (which is all the time around here) that chrome bar actually cuts off any light emitting upwards as you go down a hill, so as you go down you cannot see where your heading up
it actually cut a perfect dark line accross the top of any light coming out of the head light at night, and you never notice it does that on flat land, strange but true!!
i took my brother in law out in it one night and we headed back to his place and he saw what i was talking about, he was amazed how it cut that perfect "dark above the bar" line
it sat to low for the terrain around here
it scraped bottom coming out of the new driveway
just wasnt suited for backroad use (to much traffic around here on the main roads) hard to explain the mountain roads, like going to my sisters place here, the montains and/or hills come right up to the road one foot from the pavement and in that one foot space theres some areas that are a foot and a half drop you cant see due to the grass being high and it's for water run off, well the roads are narrow and the car was wide and if i went off the road i was screwed
so all in all it was time for a more suitable vehicle for wendy to be out in, now she feels more comfortable and can zip around town confident she can get around without a problem
the commercial for 12 2X4's a ladder a surfboard an amp and guitar....... must have been disney photography magic in miniature, cause 3 suitcases filled that beotch ;) i think i actually have more room in the back of the liberty hehehehe
i did keep my van, it's parked in the back of the garage, gonna use it to go camping with, they have some awesome camping places here with the river going right through, i do however have to look into the rear axle sometime, i had the lube changed in florida at kissimmee's hometown 4X4 shop and now it hums around 45 MPH, i noticed it driving up here right after they changed the lube, could simply be the lube isnt heavy enough, dunno
hey fish, ya got a pic of the wagoneer???
hey skip, I don't have any pics of the wagoneer, butr I will take one next time I am at the warehouse. It looks just like most of them you see on the road, but instead of being on the road, it is usually on the side of the road, fluids pouring out, and me kicking the crap out of it LOL :D

Here's a pic of my old Cherokee, next to my '91 project Blazer.
It had 5" of lift, and a set of 33's. The Blazer turned more heads, but sucks in comparason to the Jeep for offroading!
My first Jeep was a 1978 Cherokee Full time 4WD with a 360 V8. (Chugga lug, chugga lug. Loved to eat gas!) The 33's on it didn't help either I'm sure! :D
I see a Rubicon in my future. This way I don't have to start adding parts as soon as I get one. Out of the box these are offroad ready pretty much. :D
The anual Jeep Jamboree is held in Bobcaygeon, Ontario. (about 15 mins from my cottage) Two days of organized offroading. Pretty fun!
All levels of trails. Everything from "I don't really want to get my Jeep dirty", to "you WILL experience body damage on this trail".
Google Jeep Jamboree if anyone's intersted in attending this year.

But no pics on the computer. I have a 1988 Grand Wagoneer. The kid calls her "Woody". Nice black paint with full length Wilderness rack, excellent interior, new motor and trans (3 yrs), 4" lift with 31" tires. Currently I'm putting on a new water pump and electric fan.
These things are head turners. Either you love them or hate'em, there's no in between! Smack

finally got down to get a pic of the jeep. I love it, but needs some work to get it on the road again. Hopefully after taxes are all done, I can get her back on the road.

sitting behind my shop for the last five years i have a unique jeep i believe its a 70 but id have ta dig the title out its a 70 jeep comando thats kinda a half breed it has what appears to be a cj7 nose in place of the ugly oe nose & a cj7 back end spliced on. its stock top was cut down to a cab only top with a rollbar outside behind the cab & from a distance it looks like a cj8 (scrambler) it has a 304 that appeared to be rebuilt when i bought it with an edelbrock intake & double pumper holley it rides on 33 s with white wagon wheels hopefully it will be the next tow pig its driveable & looks decent but it needs freshening
i have a long history with jeeps i had a yellow cj7 in high school with a small block checy & 35 s my first jeep was a cj5 ive had 8 cj7 s & 1 scrambler by the age of 22 right now plow truck is a 3/4 ton j2000 with a 360 its ugly has a rack body & a western plow ive got several cherokees for parts & a cj7 for parts with a quadra trac & a cj5 for parts to much junk :D

I own what started life as a 66 Jeep CJ5 with a 225 v6 (buick motors that came stock from 66-71) mated to a 3 speed and a dana 18. Stripped it to the frame, tore all running gear off, put in dana 44's front and rear, Boxed and painted the frame, Dropped a buick 350 in mated to an SM465 and a Dana 300 T-case. Sits on 35X14.5X15 Boggers. Totally custom made my own body out of steel, full roll cage with 5 point harnesses. Bottom of the body sits at 3 feet off the ground. Just waiting on a few final things to get tied up and it is done. It would have been done now but I was to impatient to play and ran it around the shop before I had a radiator for it and cracked a water jacket in the 350 that I spent 3 months building. Yes, enough to make any grown man cry. 700 bucks later I am back on the trail to being done. Zach

I've had 2 & now have a Grand LTD. Loved em' all - 2 of the three made-it easily passed the 200k mile-mark without a whimper. The 4.0 is like a Slant Six - BULLETPROOF!! Lend themselves nicely to simple mods like fresh-air kits, big exhaust, TBI-spacer... The 5.2 in my Grand worked-well with the same, but MPG really suffers when your foot is heavy... IMHO- the GRAIL is the 98' 5.9 Limited! Now, at 7, there out there affodably. My next one!... ;)

But some of the guys around here get together and ride quite a bit on the weekends. Also got a shop here in town that has some pretty trick stuff for jeeps. Think they are filming a build of a Jeep for Discovery too. Should be cool. http://www.bluetorchfab.com/
Heres a pick of one of the guys rides we ride around with....engine is a 360
I'm looking for a Jeep Cherokee in my area. Please e-mail me if you know of any that might interest me. Here's what I want:
Jeep Cherokee Sport, Classic or Limited 6cyl 4 door 4X4, '97 thru '01. 40K-80K preferably.
No re-worked wrecks. I would like to find a garaged, well-maintained stock Cherokee with well-kept original paint. I like to take care of my stuff.
Color doesn't matter, but silver would be nice, to match the boat.
I will have a nice '95 Lebaron GTC 3.0 V6 convertible available for sale once I find a good Cherokee. I have owned two of these, they are excellent, reliable cars.

Anyone ever use an old CJ to move their bigger boat around very short distances, say less than a mile?
I have a 79 cj with a 304 and a 24 skater, I just wondered if it would do it?
Monkstr6
04-18-2005, 02:00 PM
If your CJ has a 304 I have no idea why it would not be able to haul it. All older jeeps are geared and built to be work horses. If it is not all jacked way up and built for 4 wheelin then I would not hesitate to take it for a longer trip with a boat. Does your boat have electric brakes? You may wanna have a brake controller just becouse a Jeep weights less than most ford rangers. Take a pic of the boat hooked to the Jeep. I just finished painting mine about the same color of my Tunnel Hull boat. Good luck. Zach

back in the early 80's I worked with a guy that had been a VP for American Motors, who owned jeep at the time. He had the big Wagoneer with all options. It was quite the vehicle and actually rode like a car unlike the old short wheelbase Blazers and Bronco's. I think they have like a cult following now--wood sides and all. I occasionally see 'em in Hemmings and they bring some big bucks. I also worked with a guy who was hooked on International Harvesters Scout. The rust bucket supreme but they ran forever.

I've been through Tellico, on Trail 1, that goes from Tellico to Murphy NC. Pretty rugged country up there. They have a big 4x4 get together every year that the magazines cover, seen it on TV once. I used to know a guy that went. He had a bad jeep and would try all the trails. It was a YJ that was locked up on both ends with Boggers. I've got a 77 CJ5 with 36's with a 9 thousand pound Warn on the front. I got my lift by welding new spring perches on top of the axles.

nice, and i bet it comes in handy with that steep driveway ya got too. :)
man i tell ya it sits higher than it looks in the pic, it comes in handy on some trails the guy from work takes me on in the mountain he lives at, or at least he calls them trails, all i saw was deep ruts and woods, small rock creek beds, mud holes and tight turns through trees that really had no signs of a trail but he knows his way around :D and he was impressed with the ole cherokee for following him so well, we had to stop alot due to the carb on his dodge power wagon couldnt handle the inclines and flooded out and caused a bunch of waiting periods, but thats when we had a beer and a cigar ;)
hack02,
i fully plan on hitting tellico sometime soon and have been keeping tabs on trail rides in 4X4 forums i may be able to hook up with, i saw a show this past sunday....extreme 4X4...that had 2 jeeps they took to tellico, i assume it was tellico TN, they did the rock crawl deal, man i know mine is only gonna do the easy stuff hehehehe ;) :D

Talon, If you ever go any higher please do your well being a favor and remove those lift blocks and spacers. Yes they are cheap and easy to install but I would never go high with any type of spacers. Springs for the rear are cheap and you can for sure find a used 4" coil lift at a swap or on ebay. Don't get me wrong, it does look cool like that and it should be just fine with the spacers at that small of a lift, but don't keep them in there if you go for a 4 or 6 inch lift. It is cool to see that this many people are into both of these hobbies. Happy wheelin guys!

well i went, and all i can say is holy ****!! man i was trail riding and rock crawling, deep mud holes with water over my grill and it never stalled or got stuck
i do need more lift though, some of the rock that we climbed dented my rocker panels and tweaked the front bumper, knocked off my wheel balance weights and took a chunk out of the passenger side rear tire sidewall
when i met up with the folks they didnt think it would make it on the trails, within a few hours i had them all smiling and cheering every time i crawled a rock formation, all i heard all day was... man can ya believe that cherokee, it's doing awesome, i wouldnt have believed it if i hadnt seen it....they took a ton of pics of us doing the trail and said they would send them to me
we were gone from 7 AM and got home at 10:30 PM, what a day!! i still cant believe what we accomplished with that cherokee!!! never got stuck or winched
wendy was a trail trooper!!! we both have sore necks today as well as the rest of our bodies but man what an experience

i was just over at Rusty's offroad jeep parts pricing a 5 inch full suspension lift ;) :D
we had a bunch of toyota's with us, check these lifts out!! the orange one had taken 1st place in a mud bog contest the night before, pics are a bit blurry cause i jumped out in front to get a pic and ran back before i got run over, they were coming fast, my little cherokee had already gone through this and i got out for pics....

i was the last one to go up this rock deal
you can see my black tire marks trying to get up over the foot and a half tall rock face at the base of the "rock stairs" we went up, then we stopped and had lunch and to the left of this pic just beyond the trees was an 8th mile high drop off straight down, was pretty cool standing on the ledge

A winch would be a good addition. One of the best investments you can make. You can pull yourself out of just about any situation or pull yourself over something almost impossible to make and save your drivetrain. Cool pics. Kinda gives me the fever again.

i spent some time on it today cleaning it up from the 2 weekends of wheelin
Cleaned up ( http://photobucket.com/albums/a116/SkipsPics/Jeep%20Pics/?action=view¤t=MVC-024S.jpg)
bought a Mig welder to start making rock sliders and a bumper setup for the front and rear
i took my nieghbor with me yesterday to the mountain and at one point when we were stopped for a beer we talked about incorporating a winch into the bumper design i have in my head
then we took these of the engine and had lunch, they are 2 ribeye steaks marinated and cooked on the motor :D

did 6 hours of wheelin on a 1/4 tank of gas and that included the ride to the place... and the trail... and back, not to bad

4-wheeling is fairly inexpensive to do once you have your rig like you want it. Even if you start breaking stuff your usually not talking thousands of dollars. I've found the quickest way to break something is to get one wheel off the ground spinning wildly and let it come back down and grab. Crunch. Spider gears are the easiest to break, or the wimpy two piece hubs on a CJ (go to one piece and no problem). Lockers somewhat solve the spider gear syndrome.
About winch mounting; I saw a clean one once. The guy had a big reciever on the front and back and the winch mounted on a plate that could be plugged into either end. He had a bad 4 bye; old Blazer with 454 and 1 ton axles locked up at each end with 44's.

first 2 things...
"front swaybar diconnects" or may just make 'em 2 inches longer, and move the brakeline mount lower
"rear shackles lengthened" an inch to go with the 2 inch blocks, need to get an add a leaf also, already made another brake line mount
then....
3 inch front springs, lower arms, trackbar relocation bracket
then....
try it on the trails again, if i have the height i need then i'll look into some new wheels and tires

These are definitely the way to go, for your YJ,TJ,XJ, or Toyota 4 Runner.
Get a set of these, and a set of quick-disconect sway bars.
Once you have these go out again with you buddies and their "stock rigs".

My buddies make the trip down there at least 3 times each year.
They're the crotch rocket guys that try to make the run as fast as possible, without having to add parts to the "Tree of Shame". (of course!)
A good friend even looked into purchasing the place that they always stay at, a few years ago, because he loved it sooooo much down there.
Sadly his father passed away as he was working out the deal, and he had to back out in order to take care of his mom.

Next summer I think im going to buy my 1st vehicle. Id like to get an older 4,0l 4dr cherokee but want to make it a 'bit' more capible. My plan as of now is to pick up a 91-93 cherokee, raise it up 3 inches and throw on some 31's
1) What 4x4 systems were offered... Command-Trac 4wd?
2) whats good about this system
3) Ive heard that they were offered with limited slip diffs in the back but that the clutches wore out FAST!! is this true and what other diffs were offered
4) Any of u guys run lockers?
The cherokee definatly has the ability to look great with little work.
Any help is great!

pman, theres a cherokee forum at www.jeepforum.com and there is days of reading in there on the different systems that came in them and what kits to lift them with
1) yes i think it is command trac
2) ya dont have to lock in hubs, just shift on the fly when going to 4 high and some like mine have a "4 part time" for wet or icey roads that only kicks in when the wheels break loose and of course it has 4 lo
3) the dana 44 rear end isnt as tough as the chrysler 8.25 rear end that came in some of the cherokees, the 44 has less splines on the axles, when looking for a cherokee try to find one that had a factory towing package, some guys swap 'em out with the ford explorer 8.8 rears
4) lockers are basically a must when doing serious offroading

"Select-Trac" is the one with both full-time and part0time.
The full time mode places a differential gearset between front and rear wheels, allowing each to turn at a different speed while making tight turns on dry pavement.
The part-time mode posi-locks the front end to the rear end, so that no matter what, this provides excellent snow traction, but you can damage the drivetrain by driving on dry pavement and making turns in part-time.
I've noticed that the lever doesn't seem to mechanically shift the gearing, but rather is an "actuator" of sorts, that tells the transfer case to shift. Mine doesn't actually shift in or out of 4WD unless the vehicle is free rolling. In other words, driving down the road, if I shoft from 2WD to 4WD full-time, it doesn't shift at that moment. If I let off the gas and coast for a secons, the 4X4 wil engage. You can hear a louder "roaring" when it's engaged. Once again, when I shift back to 2WD, it doesn't disengage 4WD until the vehicle has a moment to coast with no load.
Three of the tranfre case lever positions are in this order: 2WD, 4 part-time, 4 full-time. On at least one occasion, it has accidentally locked into part-time because I didn't yank the lever up to full-time quick enough. If you linger at the part-time click for a second while trying to shift to full-time, it engages part-time, and then you encounter the wheel binding problem when turning. I have had to put it into reverse, roll backward, then put it back in D and roll forward before it would go into normal full-time and allow me to turn.
Does this sound normal?

P-Man,
If you look at the earlier posts on this thread, you can see some pics of my old XJ Cherokee. ('88 with 33's) ;) I LOVED THAT JEEP!
When the time comes to buy a lift kit, give Howard Monteith at "Jeep Thrills" a call. His shop's about a 20 min. drive from your place (Keele & Hwy#7), but worth the trip. He's helped me a lot with my projects over the years.
Another site worth looking at is www.roughcountry.com
I've seen their ads in Jeep Magazine. I don't know anyone who's tried their stuff yet, but the pricing definitely got my attention.

3" complete system $499 USD
4.5" complete system $645 USD

yep that sounds like what i do to come out of 4 wheel mode to 2 wheel... but i havent come into that yet going into normal full time 4... i'm sure i will encounter that just as you have sometime
but i have had some trouble getting into the various modes out in the woods, seems a bit "finiky" at times
Some of you guys like to lift your Jeeps. I lowered mine. Here's the Jeep, and the "lowering kit." :D

ive done a 2 inch budget lift but plan on 3.5 to 4.5 but havent decided yet what kit to use
the 2 inch helps in clearance but the rocker dents i have now prove it wasnt enough, this rock left it's mark in my rocker panel (click on pic link) the terrain never looks as rough as it really was in pics i came out with multiple small dents and scrapes and a bent front bumper but it was a blast...
http://photobucket.com/albums/a116/SkipsPics/Jellico%20Wheelin/?action=view¤t=jellico2.jpg
when we met up with these guys for the day the older guy in the pic on the left took pics of my jeep first thing in the morning when we met up.....i asked...are those "before pics?".....he said yep, you mind getting dents and sctratches?.....i said no that wont bother me....he said "good 'cause your gonna get 'em today!!"
they didnt think i would make it through the trails with only a 2 inch lift, they all had 4/6/plus lifts
i made it through 99 percent of it but did get damage that would not have happened if it was a 4 inch lift
the slip yoke eliminator is a bit of a setback to go high but i think if i 4 wheel more often and go 4+ on lift it will have to be put on my lift plans
if i go 3.5 i will do a 1 inch transfer case drop to help with the driveshaft issues, i think it will be a must with the 3+ lift and it's inexpensive to do
ya never know what you will come up against on a trail, this pic shows what we called the rock stairs, to even start up it you had to go straight up a 2 foot face of rock, in the pic you can see where i left a black mark with the front tire trying to get up it and more clearance would have helped especially concearning the front bumper....

Don't let the SYE kit intimidate you, if you're serious about 4 wheelin with Jeeps, the SYE will help a great deal with driveline issues. I did a 350/700R4 swap into a 2000 Wrangler, along with a 4" lift (and 2" transfer case drop), and it still really needs an SYE kit. Unfortunately, the super short (9" shorter) kit isn't available for the 231C (GM) transfer case, but the 6" shorter kit that is available will go a long ways towards eliminating the driveline issues that occur when you lift such a short wheelbase vehicle. If you're using a Jeep transfer case, go for the super shorty, and you may not need to drop the transfer (better ground clearance).

Needs a set of big a$$ Super Swampers on there (33 x 12.50's), and a rack of lights. The wider tires depending on your rim's particular offset will take away a lot of the top heavy feeling that it must have right now. Then you need wider flares, and so the madness begins.... Just Empty Every Pocket
Don't forget to pick up a pair of those flex shackles too. (they're worth every penny)
