I blew my 98 200hp Mariner mag, #4 piston collapsed, I need to know how much it normally cost if I fix it myself, I have the clymer manual, and a few people helping me. I wouldnt consider this option, but this is second motor I have blown in 6 months, everyone tells me with my luck with outboards, might as well learn to do it myself, I just need approximate cost, help me you guys, new to this.

Herez a guestamate...cuz U may kan do better on sum prices, and more on others...Juss a fix!!...Piston $150 new cast(used, juss az good $50)...Gaskets, speggetti gaskets, head gaskets, base gasket-$70...Rings- $24 each hole...Machine work, bore- $100 one hole(hone all)...resleeve hole-$220(hone all)...Find out why piston failed and fix(pack/fuel starve/excessive heet/location pin failure etc)...This iz minimum, PO-BOY fix!!!!
If ya gunna keep tha motor and have piece ov mind...New piston $150...Rings $24 each hole...new wristpin bearing for piston(and for all if discolored or high hour engine)$8.99 ea wit washers(T/G)...New rod bearings-metal caged, $26.00each...If been down before, replace rod bolts$40, if first time down, use same ones...Seals (3)-$21...Gasket set(and use all tha new gaskets!!)-$89....Head gaskets(they don't kum in a set)$20 ea...Top crank bearing(it takes tha worst beating)$35...Center mains-$43 (2)...Bottom roller bearing $25...Machine work, bore or replace sleeve/hone/deck block(juss to tru it up)/tru up heads(good time to bump up compression, free HP)Remove and cleen carbs(won't need kits unless U git rambunktus and tear gasket/or break float...If EFI, git Tony to flow and cleen Injectors...If U are still use'in oil inj, replace oil geer-$23...Change water pump & replace geer oil/vacume check geercase...I never spend this much on any motor that don't leeve my shop wit new packs(both), especially if tha failure points to detnation...If they don't buy new packs, they can take it down tha road to have fixed!!...
If your halfassed mechanikly inklined, U won't have a problem building it yourself...Juss make sure U have a machinest that knows what he's doing, and a manual for torque specs(or a friend that knows what goin on wit O/Bs, that will help U thru)...Tha more ya do it, tha easier it git'z!!!...REX

Ya fergot one thang. Toss that Clymer manual an git you a factory manual, :D . The Clymer manual is OK in a pinch, but if you're going to build that motor and keep it, and OE manual is a good investment as well. We can save ya a few dollars on all your parts and the manual if you're so inclined. Let us know if we can help.
