By the looks of things, the boat I am working at purchasing is missing it's emblems. Are they still available? If not, does anyone have a .dxf file of the image?

Thx Jeff

Sorry man, no .dxf but here is a .jpg I had.
Good luck.

If anyone has the .dxf, I would like one as well, and the Mirage logo too.
Thanks

I have a vector file that i made to make stickers from, I can save it as a DXF. It is not a copy of what was on the boat, it is just converted from the logo off the web site, with some minor editing.

That's great! I now have plenty to work with. If I ever get an injection molding die built, you guys will be the first to know. That is such a good looking emblem isn't it?

glad ya like it ;)

ive thought about doing an aluminum mold with a 1 degree taper mill, and popping some cabosil/resin emblems gelcoated with a high metallic silver.

I've got it in AutoCAD dwg format and can convert it to a dxf if you like. Its the complete emblem like the metal ones on the boats with "Drive One And You'll Understand" below it. Let me know.

I was thinking the same thing, sort of. First I have to see a logo close up to decide on the tooling. I think the plastic needs something like 5 degrees of draft in the mold. I have a small injection molding machine that could pop them out at about 2 per minute. I think the plastic can be plated too.

Just have to sharpen up on Mastercam!!

wow, 5 degrees is a bit more than i thought ( i was thinking 2 degrees total, 1* per side) The plastic can be plated, but Imo chrome plating on plastic doesnt hold up well... heres a logo I have done in the past on the mill, actually waterwings will be getting his this week :D

edit- riverman, sent you a MC9 master cam file, ready to run for a logo thats 7-1/2" or so long. you can scale it accordingly... :D

I have seen that on here before, very cool. Was that done with a ball mill?

It is generally better to have more draft than less, especially with such a small & fragile workpiece. With less draft the part will tend to stick in the mold and break when the ejector pins try to push it out.

I guess paint or gel would be more durable than plating. An opposing colour would look good too.

WOW - thanks for the MC9 file! Can that be mirrored and regened?

yes, 5/16" ball mill .050" deep, if i remember right... its been a while since i did that one.

on the MC9 file, you can do anything you want with it, the toolpath is attached to the lines, so it should stay. if it screws up, no biggie, theres only 1 centered contour tool path on it. :D

I'm a little weak in Mastercam and been wanting to improve. The only way to improve is to practice and now I have something fun to practice on.

Great work guys...I like ingenuity...

but Imo chrome plating on plastic doesnt hold up well...

How does Ford get it to hold up on the blue oval emblems? They are chromed plastic aren't they?

WW- i just got the CNC fixed about a week ago. kept procrastinating on it and finally called the people. ended up being a $1 limit switch that went bad. i have a S load of that SS material that I will start on soon. I need to make a jig plate to back them so the material doesnt distort.

chris- I'll see how nice my new paint comes out before I let you know when i can do it. at least its not going to be too cold to paint now :D

When I pulled mine off (6 years ago) to clear the boat, I painted mine satin black.......they looked better that way to me, plus after sandblasting, the places where the chrome was trying to come off didn't show anymore.

Hey guys...Great job with the files.

We have an engraver here at work that I am learning to use. You can import these file types to it, but I am thinking I need a vector file for the tool path. I don't really know mucha bout this, we just use it to made Equipment ID tags, I thought we might as well put it to use. We have some black/clear plastic that you can engrave the black from the backside and backlight it. I was wanting to try a license plate, similar to above first, then I wanted to make some back lit switch panels.
If you convert a dwg to a dxf, will you still need a vector file as well to run the tool?
Sorry if I sound like an idiot, I know nothing about CNC...

Thanks guys...

You need a CAM program like Gibbs or Mastercam to generate toolpaths. Then a post processor specific to your CNC machine.

Thanks

Autocad files and DXF files are Vector files. They just may not be compatable with the machine that you are using. I have sticker making software that also needs vector files, and I have to import the DXF file into it.

With a DXF I can turn it into what I need to laser cut

DdWas it not a little flimsy to polish at 1/8? Anytime I put something that thin on the ragwheel I end up destroying it. :o
