Should the bores and the outer surfaces(where head bolts thread) be level with one another on a 2.4 Merc.
the bores being the sleeved part of the block.......what wouldbe acceptable varience got a block that has 2-4/1000 clearance for a feeler guage under a straightedge around each cyl bore

What I do is take a block of alumimum with some emry cloth and lap it flat. If the block has had a steel sleeve put in they should cut the top.

What Dave said works like a champ I use a large wetrock ( Knife sharpening stone ) with a piece of cloth on it. Becarefull if the bores are Chrome, Nik, or Nicom if you get real aggressive you can chip or cut the coatings from the deck to the bore and start the coating to want to fracture and or peel.

I didnt know if any variance was acceptable or not,Jay the bores are all steel, so chrome flaking wont be a problem. I hope to have this engine up and running next week. Thanks for the help guys-its really appreciated
