Today, Mercury Marine (http://www.mercurymarine.com/) unveiled their new 135, 150, and 175 horsepower, superchanged, 4-cylinder Verado engines at the Miami International Boat Show. The compact size of the 4-cylinder engine and supercharger puts these engines in a very favorable weight class for this horsepower size with modern technology. Mercury had many of these engines on hand for us to witness their power in persion. Very impressive new product!

We'll have a full feature up, but for now here are some photos and complete specifications.

Patrick Mackie, president of Mercury Marine is shown here uncovering the engine for members of the media:

Great job getting this into to us so quickly!!
I donno...70 lbs heavier than a v-6 2.5 litre Opti, 2.03 gear ratio......but on the other hand, runs on regular, has a supercharger, standard with DTS???

It appears from the pictures that it does not share the same clamp bracket/trim system arrangement as the larger models. What about the lower unit? Is it a smaller version of the L6, or a modified V-6?

Greg, were you able to get any feeling for the future of Optimax?? Smaller models coming?? Phase out of larger engines??

Good spotting - you're right, the clamp bracket assembly is not the same design as the 6 cylinder Verado. This was done to save weight.

The engine has a smaller lower unit, that borrows the same technology as its larger version.

OptiMax is alive and well, and I just took a ride on a 32 Spectre powered by triple Mercury 250XS OptiMax engines. Mike Seebold took me out, and the cool thing was, he wasn't afraid to go over 100. It was a beast.

How's this for cool - a 25 horsepower EFI! And, it can rope-started too!

There's MUCH more to come too - I just have to sort through all these photos.

Check out this Spectre - I owe thanks to Mike Seebold for sending the throttles home, even in a good chop. Now, that's the way to get attention at a boat show!

On the plus side they use a conventional clamp bracket. I was told of a couple horror stories at school that were most interesting of the i-6 models. The 6400 rpm redline is nice tho. And the cowl is much nicer looking.

Lucky you Greg, the 32 Spec. is a kick ass boat!

The same specs for all three engines, how do they get the horsepower difference, advance the throttle more??Seems to me you'd buy a 135 and jack the hp!!

All the spec's are the same. They must just turn up the boost.

Fun,that is probably a stretched 30 Spec that was popped off a Motion that was a stretched Motion that was popped off a Skater so it doesn't count since it is in the tripple stretched double boat catagory.Didn't you know that?lol

I would love to have it!

Greg did you get a press kit with all of those merc photos? What else is there in that little kit ;)

have to admit, the smaller Verados at least don't look like a Jumbo Shrimp

And I really do like the idea of the 25 EFI with rope start, how much does that one weigh??

Mike, I asked about Tip today - he's actually not here working, but on vacation. That's why he's been so hard to find. LOL!

I'll see if I can find him tomorrow though.

Does he have my Amigo membership card? ;)

they won't quit making the optimax. Tell me if I'm wrong the Verado 175 probably costs better than $20,000. And what kind of job would a person have to have to spenfd that kinda money on an outboard motor?

the big daddy verado (275) only cost $16,000 including the rigging... the 175 will probably be comparably priced to the 175 opti. www.jacosmarine.com (http://www.jacosmarine.com)

if you knew what OEM boat builders are getting them for it would make you sick... its substantially cheaper than 16k...

150aintenuff
02-25-2005, 10:34 PM
I would assume there is about a 25-30% mark up on wholesale to retail costs... so I would figure around 12-13K for the 275 fully rigged... the brokerage I share the building with aims for 6-20K profit depending on size of the hull.. and 3-6K if new boat.

Knowing sailboats sell at a 10% margin and powerboats are about nearly double that 20-30% wouldnt suprise me at all.

BTW the owner of our local dealer is also an OEM supplier as he owns 2 boat lines as well as the store front. so you can immagine the markup in those prices I posted before... especially since they dont like to wheel and deal on those marked new prices....

Not sure on these engines, but the hp difference between the 200, 250, and 275 Verado is controlled by the ecu and on the 275 the 93 octane also. The injectors, super charger, etc.. are all the same part numbers. It must be that the computer controls different timing, injector pulse width, etc..

xxxmarine, I believe Mercury might introduce a high performance version of the Verado engines at the 2006 Miami Boat Show. Sit tight, I think it will be well worth the wait. My understanding is that 400 horsepower is within the realm of possibility.
