Thought about buying a couple last fall, ended up buying my son an XR80R Honda and myself a Kawasaki KLR650. The Honda XR650 is designed for basketball players. Parts availability and resale value were my primary reasons.

DO NOT BUY ONE. Don't even take one for free. If you do, please print out this post and hang it on the wall so you can kick yourself every time you walk by it after your purchase and read the "I TOLD YOU SO"

I have a buddy that sells them. He couldn't give me one. I ran a 200cc and it had NO balls at all. The plastic is very brittle, And there was alot of it. If you look at one close you can see that most of it looks like it was made 20 years ago. The shocks and forks felt sad. Joe and I tried to tune the ride on one after a while we gave up. I can tell you that there is No comparision to my old 94 KDX. He's sold some of the four wheelers, They look like they will be a bitch to work on. He's been telling me that parts shouldn't be a problem, But he had to pull one of the new four wheelers apart to fix one that he sold. I think he's sold more of those goofy mini choppers as of now. If your looking for a bike to bust your ass on don't buy one of those, I don't think they have the balls and I think the bike will go before you will.

well, my mind is made up , no off-brand stuff for me. i've had motorcycles most of my life and now my 11 yr. old son wants one. probably around 100cc or so. i still remember in 1970 when i got my first mini trail. ordered one from honda in brownwood, tx and it kept getting back-ordered. next stop, the yamaha shop, i ended up with a 60cc "maverick" mini-trail type bike. it was a generic pile of junk made in tiawan. this time i wont make that mistake. thanks everyone... ;) ;) ;)

I had a Fox minibike in the late 60's. Went through 4 motors. Blew the Clinton, switched to a Briggs, Wore that one out, patched the hole in the crankcase on the Clinton with sheet metal and screws, ran that till it blew again(no governer) then put on a tecumseh, (new) then traded it for a Honda trail 70 in 1971. After 5 years of punishing that poor Honda it still never once broke down! Sold it when I got my Mustang and needed aluminiun wheels. Bought an xl250 a few years later. Still have that. Thats why I bought my 9 year old the Honda XR80. The only reason I didn't buy the XR650 to go along with it was it is just too tall. I'm not sure what Honda is thinking but the dealer I bought these from said they have lost lots of Honda sales and steered customers interested in this size street/trail bike to go to a Kawasaki or Suzuki which they also sell. I really wanted a Honda but so far I really like the Kawasaki. They sold the generic brands also but wouldn't even show me one!!!!

we have two mini trail 70s. 71 and 74 year mod. those are great bikes just like you said. the only part i havent been able to get is a headlight but i have not tried very hard. like you said, they refuse to break down. it amazes me that we can still get parts for these 30+ year old classics... :)

A REAL STOCK Honda Mini Trail 68-70 is EASILY worth 2.5k/3k.............& I wouldn't sell for TWICE that amount !! They are keepers !! Scott

It is true that you can get parts BUT Honda will only sell whats left on a shelf. Thats why they have a parts finder system linking all dealers to aid in finding parts. Some companys are re making parts but there is stuff you will have a hard time finding for bikes from the 80's because of this. But overall Honda is a great company and make a great product. My son Connor ( 10 ) has a 1985 Honda CR 60 and it rocks, it will still beat up on 60's made today, but it does not have as good as suspension as newer bikes. My other son Landen (6) has a KTM pro junior and its also a greatbike for a 50cc. It will out whole shot Connors 60 CR but once Connor hits third gear its by by.

I have a buddy that has a 50cc Polaris 4 wheeler... and it runs fer $hit too. He had it at the shop more than at home while it was still under warrenty, for carb issues.

Hey Steven,

I used to have a 1977 Honda Z50. Loved that little bike, and I do think that it would have run forever. Sold it to a "collector" as it was all origional. He was happy to buy it, but I almost felt sorry for the mini, as I bet he won't ride it much, just look at it... to each his own I guess.

I now have an XR70, and a CRF80, and need another 50 as my 6yr old says she is ready to start riding by herself. Forget the Chineese stuff, you will be MUCH happier with the hondas or Kaw/Suz/Yam... check out the KLX110, same size as the CRF70, but with alot more umph! Too bad it's green :D

I took my son(9) along with me to get my 650 and when he saw the green Kawasakis he said, "dad, how come you didn't get me one of these cool green ones" I considered the klx110 but Verne shot me a great deal on the Honda and thats what I bought him. I would swear the new 70 has the same motor as my old trail 70, sure looks the same on the outside!

Just funnin with ya Craig. Atleast it’s not “Arctic Cat” green… that should tick off a whole ‘nother group of people. Old Ford vs. Chevy thing.

I just like the reliability and no maint required of the Hondas. Keep the tanks full, and just ride. The motors do look the same on the 50’s and the 70’s as they did back 30 years ago, and the smiles these little bikes make are just as wide too.
