I have a fitting on the end of my gear oil pump that I used on my old XR2 150. It does not work on the Sportmaster.

What do you guys use? I was thinking about threading the end of a small length of pipe to screw into the fill hole and then slide my tube to pump on the other end.

Let me know what u use.

Thx

I chucked the fitting that comes with the Merc pump up in a lathe and turned it down to have enought clearance to work.

As far as turning the pipe and threading it, I'm not sure what the threads are, but I'm pretty sure they're non standard, and they're definately NOT NPT (Pipe threads)

I think they are simply 3/8-16. ?????

Probably 3/18 X 16. Havn't checked, but I took a std bolt and it went right in the vent hole, so I didn't think I had a non-std thread problem. Raceman, do like the idea of turning the end down that I have.

Any other versions out there? I assume everyone puts lube in, how do you do it, just push the tube up against the hole?

On one of the forums, someone said they took a long 3/8-16 bolt, cut the head off and chucked it up in a lathe and center drilled it with a 1/8" drill and then just slipped the clear tubing over the end. Just make sure the bolt is long enough to reach up in the gear case.

full circle as they say...in the old days, when Kiekhaefer Mercury came out with the Sportmaster and Speedmaster (around 1960)..the regular flushing attachment didn't work anymore,,soooo, without the luxury of a lathe, we took the brass flushing attachment to the grinding wheel and cut it down so it would fit..3/8 x 16 threads I believe, and I still have mine...a very rare piece indeed..but I would let it go for thousands of dollars...Olegator probably has a few also..this could be our ticket to retirement...be still my heart...you could fill the gearcase too..same type of wiget...

I would innagine the factory has a tool they use to fill and others(customers) use the tapered tubes with the tapered widget top on them that will slide in to the hole in the threads... but what do i know... my fleetmaster running boat doesnt have that problem:( just an assumption.... )

I have a Sportmaster and I just use the same plastic pump device that I used on all my other gearcases. It screws on top of the gear oil bottles, and you simply screw the other end into the gearcase and it fits fine.

volvo penta makes a extention I don't know the part number but any volvo dealer can help you. Ask for them to look at the filler tool on the SX drive.

Catfish, I have a std Merc filler pump with a std end on it. It worked great on the old XR2 where it filled on the bottom side, but the Sportmaster fills inside the end where the input shaft comes out. The std unit is too big to fit.
The grinding down of the unit sounds good, and sounds like what people do.

thx
