i just bought a mercury outboard 3.4l mod vp
it is a carb version
did anybody know what year it is and is it a good or bad engine
what's the max rpm

I've never seen a carb 3.4/Mod VP, but wouldn't say they didn't make em. As far as the other questions, the 3.4's in general are decent engines when used within their limitations. They're not hot rods and don't like to be turned hard. I turn mine mid 5's. If you scream em they break. The gearcases are the weak link and they're hard to find and expensive when you get into new stuff. Most of the pieces for the earlier 3.4 gearcases are no longer available.

Puttin' em on a high perf boat is basically trying to go harness racing with a plow mule.
