The Macintosh was actually an incredible system in 1984, too bad terrible business decisions and an insane pricing structure killed it.
A select group colleges had access to the systems for $1000 for faculty members and $1200 for students, while the rest of the world paid almost $3000 for them. GUI or not, that was a lot of money for a system without a hard drive and 128K - even in 1984.
I have a Macintosh Classic in my collection and I have a lot of fun with that little system. Mine has 1MB of RAM and a 40GB hard disk, which was standard dress for a Mac circa 1990-1992.

Macintoshes are great.
I got my first two years ago. I use Windows at work and Macintosh at home, and Mac is far better.
Give it a try!
If anyone is interested, I can explain some more, but it is really like going from a 2.4 Laser to a 300X.

yes but why would you want to ... they already use a UNIX core built in to the OS.....

Markus, I strongly disagree. But I'm not going to get into a PC vs. Mac discussion here. :)

I haven't seen a Mac for about 10 years.
Somone on NPR recently stated that Macs were much more virus resistant, both because of design, and because few virus are written for the Mac. That'd be worth something.
All computers are stupid unreliable. Can you imagine if your car or boat failed as often as your PC?
150aintenuff
01-30-2005, 08:05 PM
the reason they are virus resistant is because their OS is based on UNIX and UNIX by nature is more stable and faster than windows, also not very many people know how to run and write scripts in unix like the visual basic scripts windows use. that is why lenux is more stable.. it is also a version of unix designed by linus tarvold. BTW UNIX was designed in the 70's and is 1000 times more stable than even the orginal dos machines which are byfar more stable than any windows machine. atleast in DOS you KNEW when crap stoped working.

After using both PCs & MACs, I look at it this way (I'm on a eMac right now) ...PCs are mainstream everywhere and you can pratically pickem' up at the dollar store. There kinda like the OMC recreational outboard of computers and maybe thats why more people have PCs. The MACs are more specialized, fine tuned, hi-performance machines ...for the person that knows what they want (kinda like the MERC 2.5 Drag of computers) The only PC that I own now runs a security camera at my business & I picked it up at a yard-sale. :D

High Performance? Well, against the fastest Pentium 4 or Athlon 64 and SLi GeForce graphics, the Mac is far, far behind in terms of raw performance.
I don't have anything against Apple computers - actually, I like them. They have their strong points and weak points, like any machine. These days, comparing Apple computers to PCs is a useless debate.
What matters most is that the user of any computer is happy with it. :)

that depedns on what testing platform you are using.... on games yes but on graphics and video there is no contest... the mac will out power a X86 chip in a heartbeat...

'Graphics power' is a very vague term - that depends on the API being used. Most graphics processing in games and professional applications is executed offboard, on video GPUs. Remember that nothing pushes a computer's 3D capability harder than games like Doom 3, etc. That's why games are always used for benchmarking.
On another note, here's a computer that was also considered revolutionary in its time. A mint, in the box Commodore Amiga 500, circa 1987. Who remembers these?

I never used one, although when I was in like 3rd grade, I remember one of my friends had one. I don't remember much about it though. In those days, I had an Atari 800XL.

I still have it as well as my first gaming console an Action Max VCR type console Also by TRS... NOT EASY... both were beyond Arkiac and crapy but fun none the less... at least the action max had standard TV style graphics.

My brother and I had an Amiga 1000, then a 2000, then a 4000. We sold the last one right before Commodore went out of business at a great price because Commodore could not manufacture enough of them to keep up with demand. Amazing machines for their time.
Then we got an Pentium machine running NextStep. Now, that was an awesome Unix OS with by far the best user interface around. We were sending email and browsing the web at a time when you could not even access the @ key on a Windows keyboard and you could literally browse the whole WWW in an afternoon.
After that, I only used Windows machines at work for a few years, but in the mean time, Apple bought NeXT and based its OS on NextStep. So the Mac I bought two years ago is more related to my NextStep box than to earlier Macs.
I use both Windows and Macintosh every day. Trust me, there is no comparison in reliability, ease of use and looks. I urge everyone to give it a try. It will save you a lot of time and frustration.

Nick,
I was kidding about the linux thing on a mac. I am considering using linux as a backend server serving windows terminals running Samba but don't really know enough yet to attempt it.
I would actually like to implement dumb terminals by someone like WYSE. Wyse has a little box that serves keyboard, graphics and mouse that looks for an ip address and will connect to your network and applications could be run from the server. I think distributed computing is overrated and central control will come back into vogue soon.

Markus, when you talk about Macs being stable, are you talking about OS 9 or 10?
I've only used 9 (and it drives me crazy) but my friend swears by 10 and says it's completely different and rock solid stable.
Maureen
I am talking about OS 10, or OS X as it is called.
Its fundamentals are completely different than those of OS 9. I could not stand the Macs from the 80s up until OS X, but OS X is a completely different story.

I agree, have 2 Dells, and my son just bought his 2nd (3.4 etc.) never had a problem the Dells. Not happy with their support team tho, after 3 days trying to get slave to access web, they had me format HD, still didn't work. By accident I found that SP2 firewall was stopping it. Another 3 days re-installing everything.

LOLOLOL :p
I don't know why - for a little while, my post was duplicated, and now it seems to always drop to the bottom of the thread. I think it might be b/c I posted it while the upgrade was in progress. Or maybe it's just cursed
anyway, I'll pull it. As a follow up question though, are the program that have to run in the OS 9 shell any more stable now? Or is it strictly the X programs that run well?

I actually don't know since I never run any programs in the OS9 shell. I would suspect the latter, though.
