Im building up a case with heavy duty internals that are all new and I can't seem to get the reverse gear backlash between .030 and .050 as the manual says. The front gear is right in the middle of the measurement where it should be and the pinion gear depth has got .025 clearance between it and the pinion tool just as the manual says. Can I shim the bearing carrier away from the pinion gear to get the proper amount of backlash?

Thanks, Carter

Are you getting too much clearance or not enough?

Im getting .026 clearance.

That's good enough, once it does not bind when you tighten the carrier nut. Given that all parts are new, it will increase after breakin.

A shim on the carrier will not hold on the lip of the housing. You could try shaving .004 off the reverse gear bearing.
