im looking at a couple used jack plates. one is a 6" and the other is a 10" set back. i have a 16 ' checkmate. i am certain the transom will hold. i have an 86 merc 200 on the way. would the 10" hang the motor too far out? sshould i just go with the 6"?

If its going on that 16 foot boat I would not get the 10 inch. Opt for a shorter plate for sure. You may even want to look for a 4inch or a bobs convertable that can be made to run 2.5" set back! See, with a big v-6 on a shorter boat you are not going to need all that weight way back or it may have some balance issues.

Why would you want ANY setback on a 16' Checkmate with a 200 V6? It's just moving the center of gravity further back on a boat that's already overpowered.

I ran a 5" Bob's on my 16 SUPERBOAT. It made for easy motor height adjustment...& not doubting Raceman...but it actually liked the setback....even for being "overpowered". :D

illMATTic, Ran a 4" land and sea model 600 on my 1994 checkmate 171 Pulse, I did so mainly for ease of adjustment. You hardly needed any positive trim to fly the bow with just a driver, but with two or three people in the boat the extra set back although small really helped. Try it If you dont like the way it handles take it back off. My Checkmate had a 150 xr6 by the way.Good luck...Rob

Compared to the 16' Superboat or the 17 Pulsare, the pictured Checkmate is a small boat.

Minimal setback w/ability to adjust height would be my vote.

I guess my experience with the little Checkmates is somewhat limited, but I did fool with one a long time ago with an inline 1500 on it and never could get it handlin' right. It chine walked excessively and had a porpoise too that we never could cure completely and the owner was reluctant to make some changes that I thought might've helped it. We really didn't spend enough time with it to figure out everything that could've been wrong, but based on THAT boat I think it's gonna take some good setup work. I think you'll find solid mounts to be real important on it, and I'm assuming with a V6 you're gonna run dual cables on the steering. Back to the setback, if you're gonna run it I think like David that the minimum you can get by with and still adjust the height is best.
