The black Boyesen are more flexible and run great when new ( very snappy throttle response), but in my experience they tend to chip easier and seal worse in a shorter time. The yellow come in various types but they seem to chip less easily, have better topend with less flutter at the highest rpm and they seal better for a longer period. Thats been my experience. This is regarding the 7 petal style and the 5 petal on the stock cages.
If you run over 7500rpm and have the 7 petal you might also consider the carbon fiber 280 style single stage set. At the higher the rpm range the stiffer the reed in either yellow glass or carbon fiber will help to combat flutter.
If you have the 5 petal set in the motor now ( 135,150, 200hp) then you should try the 4 petal rubber coated cages with the carbon reeds. Excellent combo.
The 225 SMagnum uses 7 petal cages. The yellow style it comes with or the 280 CF reeds both work well in there. Plan on shorter life out of the black glass Boyesen if you purchase them instead.

Great info! I have a stock 1988 200 Merc I dont run it up past 6000 much. Does it ever make sense to buy used reeds? What will a different reed cage do for me? Thanks, Eric

on the 4 petal rubber coated cages. They seal better, flow more, are quieter and the reeds last much longer. We stock them as general replacements for motors like yours . You should not run metal reeds if at all possible. When they break, they can damage your motor. We prefer Carbon Fiber single stage on the rubber coated cages. We sell them in complete ready to bolt in sets and the price is quite reasonable.

Yeah I was checking out your website but had trouble with the catalog link. what would a full set of those run me and what kind of performance increases would I be looking at by replacing the old stock assembly.
