I just bought a 18' Ranger 481 bass boat W/ 150xr6, has no jackplate, Quicksilver 3 blade 25p prop. What can I do to this combo to gain some speed? needs help, I need to know what the maximum RPM for this stock motor are so I don't hurt it trying to go faster
Thanks

Lou, what speed(hopefully gps) and rpm are you running at know?Ranger hulls are not built for speed but longevity. I had two Rangers in the past, one with a Yami proV and the other with a Suzuki150ss. The first was a 371V with the Yami 150ProV,6" manual jack,24" yami prop(63mph@5800 rpm max)Prop shaft had to be 3 1/4below pad to carry bow. Got tired of being passed so(added a Hydro tec phase 2 kit,reeds-heads-tuner-oil pump kit.Put on a redone 25"prop and got 67-68mph at 6100.I tried numerous props, but could not find one able to carry the bow if I raised the motor. These were solo numbers and wells empty. Not to bad but in a tourney, your back down to 64-65mph.Next was a 361V with a 150ss Suzuki,24" suzuki prop 6" hydro jack. This motor had awesome holeshot and midrange right up to its 6100rpm revlimiter. It would run 66 with a tourney load.I Read an artical in Bass and Walleye boats(screaming suzzy or something). It said you can turn a 150ss into a 200 with bolt ons! Im there, went to the salvage yard and picked up a cooked 200 powerhead for carbs and tuner. From what I was told, the mid 80s Suzuki blocks 150-175-200 were the same, just different bolt ons. There first 1986 150ss actually had 198 hp. So I swapped the carbs and tuner,I had some prop work done and was only able to get 67mph max.The mods helped me get there quicker. There hulls just dont want to go fast.I have been in a few larger ones with 225s but your looking at a 68-70mph rig. Their brand new z series was just tested, and it just broke 68 with a 250 Verado. Ranger boats are well built and have a good resale value. For higher speeds you need a different hull like Bullet or Gambler. For your rig I would add a 6" jack and 24-25inch trophy.I would say keep it under 6000 rpm. Hopefully someone else who might of had a 4series hull might have some input for you. Good luck and have fun. Lee N.J.

You could keep the XR6 stock and put it on a faster boat
Re-boating instead of re-powering worked for me this year.
