Im looking at purchasing a Pro max, which i assume is early 90's, and want to find out any info i can get for it before purchase ... for eg Factory HP rating, exact year model etc.

I have been provided two engine numbers as below
1) 0D140034
2) 00110004

Can anyone help me out here, specifically on HP rating and year model? And also any advice on are these a good reliable motor???

Heres a pic of a similar looking engine i grabbed from the forum

The first serial number comes up as a 10hp. The second number would not come up at all on Merc's Parts Express site. Site was acting weird for some reason.
Man, that engine in the picture sure looks pretty!!

I believe the first Pro Max engines came on the scene around 1994. The Pro Max is basically a jazzed up version of standard production motors...they are built by the high performance division and encorporate performance enhancing features such as hand finished ports, rigid motor mounts, lightweight cowling, higher rpm capability and performance oriented lower units with low water pickups and stronger gears and shafts.

Pro Max engines have been available in 150, 200 and 225 hp versions as well as the awesome 300. Conventional EFI has been the rule, but soon this will be history and Direct Fuel Injection will be the next step. (better fuel economy and reduced emissions) No doubt there will be 4 stroke Pro Max engines in the near future.

Check out the Pro Max line on this link: http://www.mercurymarine.com/consumer_performance_outboards

Finally got some info on the second serial number you listed:
OD110004 comes out as a 20inch CLE Right Hand Horn Motor...probably a 93 245Hp EFI

Ok thanks for that, sounds like the second one you got is right. It doesnt have a lower unit at all (using my CLE) , but it is a 20" and has a horn intake.

So you assume its a 245hp or is that a definate? Just want to make sure what im buying before i buy it.

Can i assume that because it has the horn intake its a 245hp ?

Are these things reasonably reliable ?

Thanks again
Adam

Depends on the part number, and whether or not anyone has altered it.
But it should be in the neighborhood of 7-7500RPM if it's a 260.

Hi Guys,

Just spoke with Mercury Australia and quoted the correct engine number  (0D110034) and they stated its a 1991 2.5 litre efi 240-260hp...

Any idea why they quote it as a 240 - 260 hp? How do i find out what hp it really is ?

Thanks again
Adam

20 inch CLE Right Hand 245 HP EFI...according to my book, but a dyno test will tell ya what you really have in the end!
