The new technology engine scene is getting exciting

Just got the latest issue of B&WB magazine and it had both an ad where Merc claimed that their 250XS spanked the HPDI 300 and a letter from some Merc VP stating that the implicit Verado ETec comparison that has been so debated in this forum was flawed.

Somehow it made me quite excited. It seems like competition has become tougher since the feast on OMC's marketshare is over. It also seems like there are a number of quite different technologies fighting it out.

Some of us might have to get bigger boats to have something to mount the heavy new engines on, but at least the rate of innovation is increasing rather than decreasing after the launch of the first generations of clean engines.

Competition is great. I'd like them to downsize something to 125-175hp max though, that would be nice. All this new stuff seems to be large motors only, or 100hp and under. 100+hp is where the performance market starts. The only 20' and plus boats on my little lake are pontoons, as well as many other lakes here I have been on...excepting some bassers and I/Os.

Not saying if the 250xs can or cannot take the 300 Vmax. But read the small print on that advertisement. NO ONE would run a 27 Pro Series on a 3.1 or 3.3L Vmax. It is waaay too small. The l/u is bigger and that is why the VXmax props (27 and 29") were developed (15 1/8 diameter). I believe on a 21' Ranger the 300/27 Pro Series would be absolutley SLAMMING the rev limiter. On top of that they measured the readings at 5500 rpm (70.2 mph!?). Its no wonder the speed/acceleration and economy sucked!
The reason I say this is in the first 300 Vmax test (on a 22' 1,800 lb 223 Elite Champion) the 300 was rigged with the larger 27" VXmax prop and was running 73.3 loaded (UPPER 70's light) and still OVER Revving by 400 rpm! Something is fishy!

sho 305..... you prayers are answered the evinrude E-TEC is available in the 40-90hp right now and the 200-250 hp on the big end. the small ones are great for pontoons and 15-17ft fishing boats.

It just seems that with the output of 2.5/3.0L+ they could make say a 1.5-2.0L with 150hp give or take, and lighter than a current V6. They screwed up with the Merc 125 I4, and the V4s never seemed to make it to a good 150hp. I could never see the point of hanging a huge 2.5 on for a 150hp. Even half of a 300PM or 300HPDI should be much better, though I don't know how a big bore three banger would act. I heard something about a half a 3.0 race motor, but nobody said much about it.

The new 115 Opti is "half a 3.0 litre". It could probably be "adjusted" to 125-135hp without too much trouble, but at the sacrifice of some durability or sensitivity to fuel quality.
I'm all for cleaner engines, but at the awesome prices I would also prefer dependability and durability. It's always a tough balancing act for the oem's.

That is the one. 90-115 opti lists 375lbs, and the 135-175 V6 431lbs. Hmmm, now if they put that XS kit on there to get the rpms up on the 115, that would be it.:cool:

Hey did you see the cool graphic of the motor running on the main opti page? Kind of cool.

Still got a ways to go, the carb 125 is 348lbs...and at 5250rpm if it could spin 6K you know it would easily make over 125hp. Yeah, pushing reliability...well at least I like seeing stuff like the 2.5XS, that is making progress and that is good. If they keep that up we will have some pretty good motors. Any ideas on life span for the new XSs?
