I am New to the merc stuff so I need to ask.....I have a right and left sportmaster and which way dd you spin the shift shaft to put the lower unit in forward? ANd are they the same on both lower units? Just have had most of my experience on OMCs and just now trying to figure out the Mercs ! Thanks....

to be honest w/ya ive wondered the same thing. i have 2 cle's on 2.5/260's on a 23 mtr. the standard rotation motor rotates the shift shaft clocwise while the other rotates counterclockwise. i understand that it could be both clockwise also. good post as im also wondering if there is a standard to it. also is there an easy way to identify a rh vs lh lower without tearin it aprt?

Is this a problem just with the CLE or would I also have it with the sportmasters? I am thinking of getting rid of the cle and going all sportmasters if I can find the sportmaster gears for a reasonable price. Thanks for the info.Chuck
