That question can best be answered by first knowing your budget. The only Sony units I would consider are the high-end models. My personal favorite is Canon.

I got a samsung sc-d23 last spring. Have not used it a whole lot yet but it seems to work fine. I wanted a pretty cheap mini-dv one with a few features. Bought it marked down at an Aldi store. Still have not hooked it to the PC, going to try to get some boat shots this weekend to play with when I do. Need to figure out how to get rid of that wind noise at speed, maybe foam on the mic? I see returned ones cheap here (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=64333&item=3840791102) Seems to play back on the TV good, I recorded 35 minutes and played it all back three times then the battery died (just to see how long it would go). For the low cost I can't complain at all. Has IR, light, zoom, stabilizer, auto mode, and other stuff I have not even used yet. Likely an old model now.

I have had a Canon Xi for about 6 months and like it. Check out www.Camcorderinfo.com for info on all DV camcorders. I first tried 20 low end Canon's first and took both back. First was $600 model, then $800 model, and then the Xi which was $1400 early this year. Might be less now since it's been out 6 months.

The November issue, just released, of Consumer Reports has digital still and movie cameras. Although Consumer reports has it's flaws, it may help.

It's tough to beat Canon optics these days.
If you were looking for something affordable You would be happy with a Canon Zr65.
