How many of you can back up a boat trailer, or drive the boat on and off? It makes launching and retrieving a lot easier and it looks cool.

OK, girlfriends and wives too.

My wife is a real sport about it, and tries really hard, but just can't get the hang of it. Her biggest mistake is that she overcompensates and then it is just too far out to recover.

My wife has been pulling the trailer out and parking for a while now, and has just started backing the trailer in so I can drive the boat on. I have to say, she does pretty good at it. I have a 1994 crown vic cop car with chrome pipes and a very solid rumble, so she attracts a lot of looks when she's backing it up, or pulling away, especially if she steps on it. It's pretty funny to watch.

I can back and load, that is if you don't mind waiting a bit. ;) I had this woman once that cut right in between me and another truck. He had his trailer in the water and was loading his boat. I was backing in next to him. I was at the top of the ramp when I looked back to see this trailer come in at an angle and cut me off. Very Rude on her part, but I have to say she was darn good at it. If it is busy Rick does it and I just help. I don't want to read on the board someday how I was arrest for boat ramp brawling.

My wife is a GREAT boat driver!! I back the trailer right down and she meets me just as I get it deep enough and she is right on the trailer, I hook the front she kills the motor, trims it up and I drive right out.

I am very proud of her!

(she is a great cook too)

Here is a pic when I put in this spring at our house. (got a new dock now with no weeds growing out of it.)

I just put my wife or daughters in the boat or jet skis and back them in or pull them out. They could probably back the boat trailer, slowly, but the jet ski trailer is too squirrely. They are great at docking also.

My wife is an excellent backer. She was raised on a farm so she has backed trailers sience she could drive. It makes it a lot easier at a busy ramp. The only complaint I have is she spins the tires coming up the ramp on purpose.

It would probably take me a week to back our trailer down our boat launch, and I'm not sure anyone would ever want me to even try...being blonde and all, but I would give it a try! I enjoy driving our boat and I don't mind driving it on or off the trailer when needed. When I do drive our boat, my husband often gets "who's driving your boat" and of course his reply is "my wife". The guys all look at one another in disbelief...imagine a woman driving a performance boat and she's not half bad at it either!

I haven't devoloped the skills to run those speeds. it is good to see that some of the women have. We usually have one boat. If it is a toss up who drives, Rick wins :D A couple of summers ago we did have two boats and tock them both out. Rick drove his to play with and I tock the kids in the other. There was this one time that the guys wanted to do a run around the lake. Off goes these boats haulin butt, and along comes old slow poke me with a boat full of kids. I thought I did good. I was able to kept the last boat in site. ;) I felt like the lil (pesky) sister tagging behind the boys and probably looked as silly but then again that how I learned to shot, drive a motorcycles, learn the joys of mudding, and to understand the game of football. It helps when you had a brother that is some years older. You learn to be a tag along. and you get use to being the last one till you learn enough to be presentable. :)

OK OK....I just looked at this post to see that my hubby bashed me. I generally let the guys back the trailers, etc because I don't want to be blamed if someting happens. I could back a trailer if I had to, but I told myself I wouldn't drive trailers anymore when I took out my exboyfriend's Mom's mailbox. It was one of those expensive Mama and Baby Manatee mailboxes. I tore up the baby manatee and pulled the whole thing out of the ground. Keep in mind I was towing a trailer with a huge Dodge Ram pickup. At that time, all I was used to driving was little tiny sports cars. It was a very embarassing and upsetting situation. So long story told, that is why I prefer NOT to drive trailers. But, I do make up for it in other ways......

I would be willing to bet that every member has hit something with a trailer. I know I have. It comes with the territory, that's how you learn. When I was still flying a couple of our instructor pilots managed to run two brand new Boeing 777 wing tips into each other. How embarassing is that?

I was around when the first female airline pilots came on the scene. Well, we were a bunch of hairy chested macho pilots, and we thought it was the end of the world. It turned out that they did just fine.

I was walking through the Ohare terminal this summer and ran into a woman that I had not seen in 15 to 20 years. When I last saw here she was in her 20's and was the second officer (flight engineer) on my crew. My friend asked me what I did to deserve such a pretty crewmember. She is now a senior captain and can handle anything that comes her way. Still pretty too!

Glad this was brought up, I’ve always wondered about this.

My wife doesn’t know how to back the trailer, and I have no problem with that. I back the boat down to the dock, she is standing there on the dock to grab it. I pull the trailer out and park it while she is holding the boat, and then I walk back down to the dock. We hop in the boat and away we go. Why would it go any faster or easier if she backed the boat down to the dock instead of me?....We do the reverse when we come off the water. When your wife or girlfriend backs the boat down for you and then parks the truck, you still wait for her to come back down to the dock and get in the boat right? Or are you guys just leaving her there?

This brings me to another thing I never understood. Why drive the boat off and/or on the trailer. If I’m by myself I approach the dock and get out of the boat. I then tie the boat to the dock, go get my truck and back the trailer into the water. I get out of the truck and untie the boat and push it onto the trailer. I attach the winch, give it a couple cranks, get in my truck and pull it out…..Why get in the boat and drive it on instead of push it on????

Just wondering,

-Craig

don't have a wife or girlfriend, so my brother usually does the trailer thing for me, I can do it but I prefer to sit in the boat
I drive on and off because I don't have the luxury of a dock at the launch ramp.

There are places that have no dock and a line of trailers waiting to launch and retrieve, and no place to tie up. You drop off one person who gets the trailer. They back in you drive on and don't tie up the line.

Yes it would make sense to drive off/on if there is no dock. We do have decent docks at the local landings around where I live.

guy's

the only "boating girlfriend" i have ever had was pretty well schooled in the relm of hot boating and only needed a few pointers here and there. she grew up with her parents owning a new hydrostream, so in short i never ever heard "this is too fast" it was quite the opposite. in addition to this she handeled the allison very well in to the mid 90's. it suprised many at most any landing when i would back in the rig and she would start the drag motor in gear to idle off the trailer for a 20 second launch. (how many times have you seen the family circus do it that quick?) by the time i parked the rig and walked out on the dock to step on the bass boat after collecting several smiles and "pretty cool" comments..........girls who really like hot-boats are few and far in between. what makes this worse is the fact she can do all the trailer dutys and mix a fantastic cocktail. and be your best friend.

My girlfriend, Denise, is actually pretty good. We usually tow two boats everywhere, so she really doesn't have a choice. She DOESN'T tow the STV, unless it's an emergency;)

Smurf....Sounds like you might be with the wrong type of girl, but who am I to judge? If you are happy, more power to you....

I'm sure one day WOT will teach me how to correctly drive a trailer. The problem with me driving the boat is....I tend to only know 1 speed and that is WOT, Hot Foot to the floor. Considering I know nothing of how to really "drive" a boat, that could be quite dangerous.

quick tip for those learning to back up trailers. Easiest way to do it. put your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel and whichever way you want the trailer to go thats the way your hand goes. you want the trailer to go right your hand goes to the right. you want the trailer to go left, your hand goes to the left.

I'm with crazy horse, she can't even back up her car. When we were dating she told me she just backs up until she hits something, that's what bumpers are for. I laughed my ass off, AND NEVER FORGOT THOSE WORDS. We have a circle drive now.:D

Anyway, she's hot, So I just tell her to stand on the dock and look good, I'll do it myself. She also cooks good and makes good money....so I never cared about help with launching the boat.

And SHE doesn't care about driving it. Too loud, too fast, she really could care less.

My wife drives our Sport Scarab with twin 250 offshores, up on thr trailer and sometimes when the ramp is mossy, will throttle up the motors to help push the rig out of the water and of course, backs off when the revs come up. The rail birds are pretty impressed with the tire smoke and white water. No big deal.
