All right, now that things have settled down a bit, I want to know. After being jealous of you most of the year because of your year round boating, now I see the other side. So, Is it worth living in Florida knowing what you know now? Don't forget, Ivan is still out there. Smack

you are kidding, right? lmao hell yeah its worth it, especially when hurricanes like we have been having are pretty rare. Funny thing about human nature- you always remember the latest things that happen... you northerners can keep you snow and freezing cold, i would rather have 5 weekends out of the year ruined instead of 5 months

I'm just looking for thoughts.

I am looking for a place to retire, and I too hate the cold and snow etc. But Socal looks nice to me too (just got back from there) and they really don't have many earthquakes.

I'm not a Northerner, im a border state. Haha. Stilll fighting the Civil War here. Smack

Ditto what Corona Mike said.

Yeah, we get hurricanes. There's a hurricane season every year and we get some nasty weather during that time. I've lived here for 30 of my 35 years and have NEVER seen anything like what we're seeing this year. With that in mind, think about this: It snows every damned winter.

Mother Nature says no one lives in where there is no chance of disaster. I'll take the ones that come every couple of years rather than every year like clockwork.

Besides, I've told y'all before that I'm allergic to snow. It's that same allergy that drove my folks out of Ohio in '74. :D :D

I even tried about 12 years ago to live in snow country again. (Maryland). Brought my Florida raised butt right back within 2 yrs. The wife and I fell in love with South Carolina when we were up there this spring, but they tell me it snows up there, AND they're susceptible to hurricanes. Guess I'm stayin put. May as well, after all these storms pass, there probably won't be no one around here but Parker, Corona Mike, Fish, and me and the four of us will have to do our best to keep the local bars economically secure. :D :D

Check the state income tax. Where are you going to boat? The traffic is downright treacherous.

I have been to Socal many times, and I choose to live in FL.

Smack,I've lived in Florida over 50yr's from Jacksonville to Marathon.I was in 6th grade when I was in the path of Dora.I remember the fury then the calm as the eye of the storm crossed right over us then all hell broke loose. It was a bad storm but we were ok with minimal damage. Some were in the wrong spot that day. These storms don't pic who it hits. This storm pretty much rode the path forcasters thought it would.I didn't live it the path so I stayed home.If I had I would have left and hoped for the best.Thats about all you can do,and insure your properties. The Effects last night have downed 100's&100's of trees and alot of them have caused power loss and severe damage to homes.A tornado past my house last night taking out houses along the way.It Gave me reasons to reconsider my position but I could have been riding though Kentucky and got killed by a drunk driver.I think the odds are greater that youll die in a car crash than in a Hurricane. With theWildfires, mudslides, avalanches, earthquakes, tornados and terrorism there isn't any place that is SAFE.So to me I will take my chance in the sunshine state boating and dodging hurricanes than getting snowed in for months.

Somebodys got to do it. ;)

BTW This storm isn't stopping here in Florida. What leaves here is going to go north where it won't be takin seriously.Got to go a tornado is comming at me at 45mph.here we go.Peace

it's very rare to get a season like this one

my parents moved me down here in 72 (victim of parental transplant) the 3 kids (my brother and sister and i) never cared for florida but made the best of it, my sister headed to tennessee, my wife made me stay however my dream of the mountains may come soon :), my brother stayed but has had conversations of going a bit north

the hurricanes usually stay offshore so the summers here are fairly normal actually so yeah, i'd say it's worth not shoveling snow  i know for a fact i wont go that far north ever again!!

Every part of the country is subject to some kind of natural disasters. You just have to pick your poison.

I lived on Long Island, NY for my whole life and I love it there. Problem is, summers are way too short. I still have a house in New York (near Hunter Mountain) and plan to keep it. I've been in Cape Coral for about a year, and although I actually didn't spend that long here (back and forth to NY, etc.), I love it. Water everywhere and year-round boating. It's paradise.

Born and raised here... in fact, born during a hurricane. This year's hurricane season is especially active and has been incredibly rough on a few members here; but it is not the normal hurricane season. Paradise almost all the time does not suck. :)

Hurricanes and crappy salaries now that the .com era is completely history. If you're not in a service, health care, banking or leisure industry you better have some good lotto numbers or somebody has to die (inheritance)

Still, I'd rather be in FL, every day is the same weather wise. You don't make it out this weekend, there's always tomorrow or the next weekend and the weather will allow it. Not like Pgh PA where it once rained for 13 weekends straight. What a dump.

What I don't get is why they put heat pumps in houses up north and sell houses down here without a genset or the roof strapped on? Or a house without prefabbed window coverings? Either way, Frances was barely a hurricane and Charlie happens every summer up north or in the midwest (tornadoes) not to mention what happens when the temp falls under 32.

You want a real hurricane, try Camille, 190mph sustained winds, gusts to 220mph in a 50 mile radius. So strong they couldn't fly near the eye, too dangerous, they could only estimate the wind before it came ashore. Afterward they had to have crop sprayers fly the coast with insecticide to keep the bugs from spreading disease from all the dead (livestock, pets, rodents and people). Now that's a hurricane! Back when they named them after women, capricious, unpredictable and all with an attitude! :D Now we get hurricane Georges and Alfonso. What are they gonna do? Sway into town and blow some wind up your #ss? ;) ;) ;)

Just remember the best perk about living in FL... we decide the elections! :)

My Wife, Kid and I took our Motorhome for two week vacation in Fla. Xmas 1989. 1st week it was fantastic, From Disney, down thru the keys, & back. Mid 80s, woke up next morning it was freezing, hi-ways closed because of slippery conditions, cars and trucks off the road, brown outs, gas station signs "no anti freeze or testers", Orange Groves spraying water on trees. We were the only ones at Sea World with Winter coats. Felt like we were back in Illinois. Other than that, beautiful state. Good luck with the Hurricanes.
