If anyone has cut the exhaust snout off a 15 or 20 inch offshore midsection, I would like to buy it.
I know a few of you have cut them off for more noise, if you are willing to part with it, let me know.
I need it for a project I am working on.

Wayne, I sold X Tremed a 15" Merc SS that my partner whacked when it was new. I gave him the cut off also. I don't know if he put it back on, or wants to keep it for later, but you might give him a try.

I will get in touch with him.
I am building a bolt-on snout for a 12 inch mid on my STV - to keep the Marine Police happy.
A 12 inch with a 280+drag electronics+SVS+PCU should make for an interesting combo for lake use on a light River Rocket.
Hey Wayne sounds like your going to run Pro Gas & Lake Racer ?--- When you get your lake boat together let us know the 1/4 mile times;)

I bought a 1991 2.4BP EFI with the 20" mid. The mid has the lower part drilled with .5" holes on the underside and I would rather have an exhaust snout so it exits the rear. Does anyone make a weld-on snout for the Merc Mids? I saw one that had been welded on a slOMC.
Would it be cheaper to find someone with a mid that already has this...? Other than the SST120 and F1 mids, what other model designations came with the larger rear exhaust?
Thanks for helping me on this... just comepletely NEW on some items. I keep hearing that if I want to reduce my CG and increase handling I need to cut that 20" mid down to a 15" midsection.
Whats the best way to handle all this....?

Bob's Machine (http://www.bobsmachine.com/)
They have tabs so you can screw'm or you can weld'm and blend'm in and they look real good... They are the square type and look like the MERCS from the early 90's - not the more rounded ones like the current issue.

The height CG deal is not as big a deal as many would believe when going from a 20 inch Offshore mid to a 15. The big difference is the CG for and aft, the 25 pounds removed from the transom with a 15 inch mid helps many boats run more cleanly.
The Offshore 20 inch mids and the short shaft 15 inch 2.5L ones all came with rear exiting exhaust. The 20 inch mids with closed exhaust and the 15 inch mids weigh around 125 pounds. The Offshore 20 inch mid weighs around 20 pounds more. Drop another 10 with a short Offshore trim ram and you can make a bigger difference.
The various 12 inch racing SST/Champ/F1 mids have a wide open exhaust out the back - only the first generation 12 inch mids had a slight turn down. All of these weigh +/-66 pounds if you include trim ram and all of the same accessories.
Bob's machine used to carry a weld on snout for the old style (square) midsections like the 2.4 and early 260. The later mids have a more rounded shape.
I hope this helps,
Cuda/Jim - The River Rocket is NOT for racing, just for play. It has a 15 inch mid right now, but will be getting a 12 inch at the end of the season, that way it isn't legal in Lakeracer.

I wasn't aware that a champ mid wasn't legal in Lakeracer. I thought I saw a big tunnel with a F1 style race mid/V8 OMC powerhead at Jasper year before last in Lakeracer. (yellow and white and 20' or bigger?????)
I'm really surprised at the weights posted too. I'd have thought a std 20" mid was lighter than a 15" Merc SS, but would've expected the 20" offshore to be as heavy or heavier, even though the SS has the extra 2" added in the swivel bracket that obviously adds some weight.

The 12 inch mid is only legal under the Pro Gas rules. My STV has nearly a Super Gas set up which is required to run a production mid. There used to be a great running Eliminator Daytona with a Pro Gas V8 on an OMC race midsection in Lakeracer.
A couple of years ago I got on a kick and weighed everything I could get my hands on for the 2.5L engines. Cowls, 260/Drag/280 drop-on powerheads, Racing powerheads, mids, gearcases, different steering systems, swing brackets (before and after lightening), trim pumps, etc. I really ought to post the list sometime.
The weights startled me when I weighed them. But if you look closely, the mids with open exhaust are thicker castings. I DID NOT weigh the 20 inch production unit (closed exhaust) with the liner installed - I removed it before weighing it (I have never had any interest in running one). Even the 12 inch mids were supposed to weigh different, but I weighed all 3 "studs up" types and got the same weight.

Thanks for the great info. I have a offshore mid on this engine so I am wondering for this Vector if I would not be better off building the engine with a shorter mid to lose some of the unnecessary weight.

Wayne, why was the OMC allowed to run the race mid section in Lakeracer if the Merc's can't, or have the rules been changed since then?
I wish you would post all the weights. That'd be an interesting source of comparison, and information worth printing and saving. I wouldn't think the liner would make a siginficant difference in the mids, probably not over a pound or two????

Wayne in the last Champboat race Seebold Racing were running the new 12" mid w/muffler on an experimental boat that ran in SST120 class with a 2.5 XS. Very quiet !!!!!!!!! They also run them in europe .. (I think ??)
I will look through my photo's.

The 12 inch racing mid IS ALLOWED in Lakeracer under Pro Gas rules (Merc, OMC, etc.). Not any of the other rules/weights.
I will locate all of my hand written notes on the weights and put a list together for reference/amusement.
Jeff - I have seen the mufflers they use in F1, I am not interested in those. I just want to aim the noise at the water instead of out the back. A simple turn down will work well to get me through the noise restrictions.
A cut off snout would be easier to start with than building one from scratch and casting it in aluminum. Or building it from billet.

A good welder and some thin Al plate could make up a smooth looking downturn for the champ mid. I made up a box muffler for my small snout mid to keep the old retired Council off my a**. He is the only one that complains so I don't worry about it any more:cool: Of course I keep my fingers crossed:eek:

Wayne, I guess it just shows that I don't understand the Lakeracer rules. I'll have to read up and figure out how it all fits.
I've always wanted to see one of the European mufflers. They've been around pretty much since the new style champ mid, because was at Lake X probably AT LEAST 10 years ago and was told that they were runnin' em overseas then. Since the DNR is so anal on our lake I'd stick one on my yellow boat just to give em one less thing to watch me for.

I have looked at making one from plate, but I want it fairly heavy to stand up to the vibration and heat - and still look decent. I don't want it to look like an after thought.
If I can't locate a cut off snout, I will make one from resin and have it cast. Casting is easy in Birmingham.

Wayne,I think Bobs Machine Shop has what you want.it has the same basic lines of a 2.4 offshore snout for 49.95.
