Michigan Hot Boats at Wamplers Lake, September 25th.

There will be quite a few jet boats for your spanking pleasure. :D

The lake is approx 2 miles end to end, 780 acres. Jerry's Pub is on the south shore (YES, there's a BAR right on the lake!) The water is clean and clear, there is a public beach, and a couple of spots to pull up boats along the park property. the lake has a couple of sandbar hangouts.
Most of the lake is plenty deep enough if you stay away from the shore. Depth map available here in PDF format: http://www.dnr.state.mi.us/SPATIALDATALIBRARY/PDF_MAPS/INLAND_LAKE_MAPS/JACKSON/WAMPLERS_LAKE.PDF

1.5 hour drive from Brighton/Howell
1.5 hour drive from Lansing
1.5 hour drive from Detroit
45 min. drive from Ann Arbor
1 hour drive from Toledo.

Wamplers Lake is in both Jackson and Lenawee counties, near MIS speedway. Take US-12 to M-124 (aka Wamplers Lake Rd), 1/2 mile north and turn left into Walter J. Hayes State Park. Daily pass is $5, I believe. There is also a campground 1/4 mile north of the launch entrance on the East side of the road. Another small lake called Round Lake borders the campground http://www.dnr.state.mi.us/SPATIALDATALIBRARY/PDF_MAPS/INLAND_LAKE_MAPS/JACKSON/ROUND_LAKE_V3.PDF It also has a launch, but with limited parking. A small canal connects the two lakes, there is a low bridge to go underneath. My boat fits under it just fine.

Water cops from both counties are out on the weekends. During last year's gathering, they were really cool, and weren't bothering anyone for breaking the speed limit, some guys made brief 100 mph passes without any trouble from the law. One guy took a cop for a ride!

Who is going to show up??

It is a little close to me, though. I have never been there, I am surprized I had not heard of it. Maybe the marine patrol will let me make a speed pass. I might could hit 53....

Yeah, get that 'stream up to Hardy. Bring yer gang up where the big boys play! I'm sure there will be a 'stream or two for you to play with, especially the ol' powder puff blue one with the OMC. That's my buddy's old Talon in the pic you posted. Great boat!

You ever run up to Anchor Bay? Been there a lot in the past 2 years when the snow sux.

I can't make it to Hardy this year, I still can't afford a truck or a Jeep. My Lebaron wouldn't hold up to a 3.5 hour tow. I want to come up there someday...

I plan on going to Wamplers on the 25th with my wife, and possibly a couple of friends (Wives can chat at the picnic tables while the guys tear up the lake :D :D :D )

You guys in lower Michigan and Northern Indiana/Ohio are less than 2.5 hours from here, you better come out here! I have not met anyone from this board other than Lynn (Cap't. Insane-O), and dammit Cappy, you better make it out there this year too. Take the day off and bring that little CAT out to the lake. Did you hang some new power on it yet?

I live in Tecumseh, 15 minutes West of Cabella's.
I work in Ann Arbor.
Call me at work if you want to talk about Wamplers...

Do you guys mind if I bring my boat up if I have my motor ready ? I have a 12ft Hydrostream Hustler that if everything goes right I will have a 70hp Stinger for it next week. I guess I would be pushing in the 60s or maybe low 70s. Here is a pic of the boat. Keep in mind I bought the boat from a guy who had it posted on Hydrostream.org and I dont have a motor on it yet. It did have a pro 50 on it but I intended on upping the hp :D

Anyone is welcome to show up! It's a public lake.

The Hot Boaters are a really nice group of people. I met some of them last year. I am not part of their organization, but I like to go to the lake and check out all the fast boats, and take pictures.

There are several hundred yards worth of beach and shoreline parking and anchoring, right between the launch site canal and the public beach:

Are there many O/B tunnels or is it mostly jets and v-drives? Will there be any racing or is it going to be shoreline / parking lot racing and big Wheel O' Fortune speed claims. Heard a lot of these Michigan Hot boat boys make a lot of big number claims at Hardy over the years, but have yet to see one backed up. Maybe this will be the year.

That's a trick question. I've never gone to Wamplers on a big Saturday for the large turnout. Yes, there are lots of jetters as well as some outboards, that's why we need more Scream And Fly outboards there to REPRESENT...

SHOW UP, bring the good stuff!

I'm planning on Saturday but not sure which boat I'm going to bring. I have to work in the morning so it'll be in the afternoon sometime. There's usually 3 times the boats on Saturday so it does get rough there. It's always a good time though, great bunch of people. Tom

Tom, you've been to both Hardy and Wamplers. Which place has the biggest turn out of boaters and which has more outboard vees and tunnels? I have that weekend off and would like to go to Wamplers, but only if there are some outboards that show up. I'll be at Hardy for sure, cuz that's where most of the high performance rigs will certainly be since there is a place to race and the law doesn't bother you!

That's the weekend of the drawing for the lots up in Oscoda, so I'm going to have to pass I guess. Hey Tom if your going to be there I need to get a hold of George or Tom to get your props back to you.

Big Daddy, CONGRATS!!! Hardy has the most outboards. Wamplers has more jets and v-drives but is usually colder and it gets pretty rough there. At Hardy you can always find smooth spots to hit 125. I have been to both and Hardy has 10 times more boat traffic but Wamplers has the Ohio and Indiana STV's that show up too. I really can't put a number on it but at Wamplers the club usually roasts a turkey or has some sort of meal. Capt'n, you can hang on to them if you need to. At Wamplers I usually take the slow boat as it gets too rough for the 120. I've seen upwards of 6 STV's, a couple Talons and 4-5 Eliminators at Wamplers. Tom

Wolverine

A few new STV's to stir up some action with -- I'll be there !!

pyro
09-08-2004, 05:44 PM
The whole point of posting this thread was to talk some more outboard boaters into showing up!

Big Daddy, to answer your question:
If more of YOU outboards come, then there WILL be a pretty well-balanced mix of outboards, jets, and a few v-drives too. Hope to see you there!

If some of you Scream And Fly'ers will be there, I'll bring some hamburger patties and we'll have a big burger cookout. I look forward to meeting some of those in person who I've chatted with here for the last four years! Look for the silver metal flake Vegas XT, it's hard to miss on a sunny day!

As for the weather, September is a toss-up. Last year it was 75 and sunny. An absolutely perfect day. I hope the weather cooperates this year as well.

As for the water, SHOW UP EARLY before the weekenders and jet-skis come out, I'll be arriving around 9 AM. Stay for the day, bring some props to test and swap, I'll bring a couple for people to try out.

Last year, both Jackson and Lenawee county water cops were nice and OK. They were happy to see responsible boaters wearing lifeline vests and kill switches. Someone said that one of the cops went for a triple-digit ride in someone's boat last year!

If anyone needs directions, call me at work Tue-Sat 10-6:

Sorry Pyro, both have their good points and bad points. I like wamplers as it's usually very laid back with boats making 90+ mph passes. If you want to see some fast boats and some good bench racing come on down to Wamplers. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of outboards that go there. I don't want to discourage people from going as it is a good time. I'm looking forward to meeting you also. Tom

I should have the 140 on it and runnin, the interior done, carpet laid, I just got more teakwood today so I can finish the trim. Tryin to figure out a color scheme is givin me fits! I wish i had a program on here that I could just click different colors on it and see what it would look like. Anyhow, Wamplers is closer to me. We have a chain of lakes with 2 sand bars close to me and lotsa hotboats, but wamplers is a different place to go. I hope it is warm, or at least not raining.

EVERYBODY:

Be safe, stay on the county patrols' good side, and things will be alright. Show them that we're a responsible group. Idle out 150 feet before taking off. Come off plane far away from shore and idle in (they love to write-up for the 150 foot thing.) Some racing will usually be tolerated.

Kill switches. Vests and helmets ON if you plan to run WFO. Easy on the Molson, the .08 % applies to lakers too. Hang out at the beach if you're buzzed! If anyone gets busted for DWI, we're gonna look bad, so keep it clean.

Speaking of drinking, SCOTT GILMORE you better make it out there, boat or not. I got a few beers with your name on em'.

Yes, there will be a few jettters there, but be nice to 'em, they have "pride in their rides" just like the rest of us. Some spankings WILL need to be delivered, but spank tastefully.

Chevelle-

I almost went down to Butler to watch the races last weekend, but my friends cancelled on me. I love that track, the noise, the dirt in my hair.... :D

Wamplers is a little over 40 miles from Quincy. Easily less than an hour away. A straight shot up US-12. See map from Quincy below:

will we be able to race or will we get tickets if we try? I do not want to show up to run only to sit on shore and talk about how fast my boat is. most of the hot boaters do this when they came to the hardy party none of them raced they all sat around. don't get me wrong they were nice but I like to race. I also know you cant say for sure it we can or cannot but would like to know if they raced last year or did they run one at a time? thanks tom

Wolverine
09-20-2004, 04:08 PM
Good question Tom. I'd hate to drive all that ways to just sit on the beach. I'm coming to run - I can sit at home on my own lake. And like at Hardy - no inbred racing.

Should make for some fast passes!

Too bad I don't have a boat that I'd bring to a hot boat meet! All I have is the wife's Glastron I/O, the ancient pontoon boat, and my 14' Alumacraft/15 Honda. I'd be too embarrassed to run any of them!!

pyro

Racing? YES! Definitely. Talk is cheap. I will have the video camera on hand and I will post plenty of racing footage afterward to lay on a guilt trip on whover doesn't show up Saturday!

The Sheriff Marine Patrols know that everybody is there to run fast. :) They have been OK with some grudge racing in the past. You're NOT going to get a ticket unless you're just plain driving stupid or drunk. Last year there were several 115+ mph outboards making passes while the patrols simply kept an eye out for any downright reckless behavior. The cops were happy to see so many hotboaters wearing vests and helmets. Heck, someone even took one of the cops for a 100 mph ride! :D

There were quite a few jet boats drag racing on Sunday last year, and a nice fellow named Darren took me for a 85 mph ride in his Talon. On several occasions, we were running three boats side by side over 75 mph down the length of the lake. No problems.

BRING PROPS for try-outs, buy/sell/swap, etc.

The Walter J. Hayes State Park borders the East side of the lake (US-12 to Wamplers Lk Rd.). Jerry's Pub is on the South shore, (US-12 to Egan Hwy)

The boat launch is on a canal betwen Round Lake (small) and Wamplers Lake. There's an old-school marina just beyond the low bridge. On Wamplers, there's a small penninsula at the mouth of the canal, people park on both sides (I'll probably be here). From there to the State Park beach is 100 yeards or so of wooded shoreline. Boats park wall-to-wall along this park property shoreline. See here: http://forums.screamandfly.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=43158
A few boats also park on the opposite side of the beach area, which is "no wake" for 150 feet beyond the swim area bouys.

Be sure to spank some bassers, there's quite a few who live there, and some of them think 70 mph is fast. Spank those jetters, too. SPANK! SPANK! SPANK!

MEIJER has 28-pack Molson bottles on sale for $16.69. HELL YES! :D :D :D

I also have 5 pounds of Meijer Ground Chuck, I'll partially freeze it and cut it into patties for the grill. I still need to get charcoal and fluid. Burgers on me!

I've belonged to M.H.B. since 1991 and have yet to have a bad time no matter where we go, but I'm rather partial to Wamplers Lake. Some of the guys get there around 8 to make some runs before the lake gets rough. Sounds like a good turn out. I'll be in the Seebold Warrior. I won't be there until the afternoon though. Sorry Chet but I'm bringing the slow boat. Tom

Saturday: Sunshine along with some passing clouds. High 76F. Winds NW at 5 to 10 mph.

JW, did you say "Sugarloaf?" Near Chelsea? Just wondering. That little lake is where my boat's previous owner lives, it was where I test drove the Vegas the day I purchased it...

HARRY: This jet boat? I took the photo last year.

Sugarloaf is a half mile long lake near Kalamazoo. I do some testing there but the local Sherriff likes to radar me. I don't think a 55mph over the speed limit ticket wouldn't be good. Tom

Get there nice and early. We can test props and stuff before noon. The lake gets a little rough in the afternoon, so some of us can bump up the trim and do some "wave hunting" if the Sheriff doesn't mind us catching some air. :D The rest of you can come over to my boat to meet my wife Jessica  and grab a cold Molson from me. Give me a head count for burgers before lunch time. I made up 12 lbs worth of chuck patties this morning. I have buns. I have 2 bags of potato chips. I have a few beers, and I'll have a few tomorrow :D

Somebody wanna buy some 2-liters and bring them? At least a couple of Mountain Dews, maybe a few others?

-Chad

I hafta fix the trim leak out of the valve body of the pump. I think the jet and tunnel would make a good pair....:D

It's 5:30 AM and I'm up and getting ready for the long drive down. We have two boats coming from the Hardy Dam area, myself and Denny in our Mirages. The Lansing area boys will be there too. Pyro, be ready my friend, you are about to be invaded by the Riverdogs!
