Does anyone know of any good HP improvement mods for this engine? It is a 1985 evenrude 150 and is on a Volero. Would a nosecone help speed and handling on this boat motor combo? I want to use boat for skiing and occasional wide open blasts across lake. What rpm should I be turning without running into probblems? I am from the car relm and just starting to learn about boatmotors. Thanks for any info and dont be afraid to email me if anyone has any old perf parts for this motor laying around to sell.

I'd look for some better heads to get the compression up,(check with Bill Gohr, and/or Racer) and be sure to back the timing off, I believe that was a low compression motor (around 90psi) and came with 30~32* of timing. If you can get 120 to 140 psi, and set timing around 26 or so, you should see some serious gains. Definitely check jetting after the mods. You might want to consider some good reeds too, my choice would be Boyesons.

Hey thanks rick, did compression test on motor when I bought it and it was from 90 to 97 pounds, Is there a certain year of head that will work or is this aftermarket? Also got a email from you with a file attached but it wouldnt open today. How much for reeds? and I know this may sound stupid but, how do you time boat motors with a light or a degree wheel?

You might want to make sure your virus definitions are up to date. I got a nasty one this morning, and didn't have mine up to snuff, nearly caused me some major problems. I got the same file several times today too. I would check with Bill Gohr or Racer on which specific heads to use, and either will probably have what you need. They will probably have better and more specific info for you too.

I'll take a stab. The 150's were very sensitive to fuel, always make sure you have good 92 or up. Not much you can do. Raising the motor on the transom should yield the greatest gain if you haven't already done so. Too high and you'll need a cone. The older 235's were great power makers. What pitch at what rpm are you topping off at now? How's the handling?
I had a 235 and then a 225 and then a 150 on my V-King. The 150 just couldn't fly the boat like the others. I think my 150 Evin was a 1988. I've heard good things about Gohr, Stoker and Monty for mods. You want to do the work yourself?

I have a OMC 25 pitch preditor sighned by pendigrass? with cup and ventiladed ss round ear prop it does 73mph by speedo and has good hole shot. I have a CMC inch hyd jack and am running about 3 inches under pad. Boat has slight chine when kicked back on pad. This is my first streamer. I know this motor is a little outdatted by what most of you have now but it makes good learning practice for me. I would like to have a 235 one day. Do you think a nose cone would help? Thanks Darryl

Is the engine a standard 150 or the XP version, they have different style heads with similar compresion. I have heads that will help$200.00 for a set of good used ones.

I have a friend who would call this China Walkin'! Is there any slack in the steering? What rpm at wot? Oh and don't misunderstand my motor comments. You have a decent setup. I wasn't slammin' it. You might want to raise the motor to reduce teh walkin'. Be aware that when you do, the ski ride might go to crap. In which case you will find it intolerable. I put negative trim wedges between the motor and jack plate to plant the bow when skiing the course. I loved it. Tracking was great.
Ski boats are designed to stay wet, speed requires to free up the hull. That diversity can only come w/ an adjustable plate. Is your CMC adjustable? I'm sure it is.
6 degree of negative wedgeworked for me very well. had a friend make them out of billet vs the $25 caste ones from Bob's.
Your best bet is to go to a hot boat gathering w/ the ton of expert eyes looking at how the boat is running.
The walking went away for me after many hours of seat time. Counter steering is hard to explain, it must be felt, grasshopper....
If racer says change the heads, then that's solid advice.
Enjoy, I did and still miss my 'Stream. Now I drive a tank--w/ an open bow.

That motor has alot of potential. I ran that same combo for years. In the mid 80's that was the winning combo in lake racer at Blarneys for 2 years. I'd get so far out on everyone they couldn't catch me (low port 150 XP with very special crankshft, think about the bottom end there Racer). If you want to have the engine done call me 847-356-3245. If it's a 1985 engine it can actually be one of 3 engines and all had different heads. BE CAREFULL!!!I would need the model number. Yes I have parts left to help that engine out. Old 235 or 200 heads would help you a bunch $199 a set.

Thanks Sleekster (no offense taken), Racer and Bill, hey Bill missed you at 5.30 tonight on the phone ended working latter than I thought , Do you think I could or dare to do the porting without any expierence on 2 stroke and if so do you know of any patterns? I know this is touchy on 2 strokes , Do you have any Land and Sea 10 port reed cages? Chris Lake says they will work good also. What is this special crank shaft that your talking about? So far we have bigger carbs ,Porting and heads, How about exhaust is there any thing there?

L&S 10 ports will not help. Special crank is an even fire. The porting could be done but remember one mistake and you need a new block. I port that engine almost entirely on a digital mill. Checked on heads today have several that will help, as Bill mention a model number would help determining your exact engine. Yeah Bill but what about a sleeved 2.6, low ports, fingers and the crank, ring any bells.

I had to go run some errands, sorry I missed your call. Call tomorrow. I have the parts we talked about. Don't bother looking for those reed blocks. We'll just use some older cages, 2 stage reeds, and stuffers. Racer lives a little further from you than I do in the land of fruits and nuts.......

He's got a 150 EL. Needs more than heads. Any more of those cranks? I was cleaning out the timer base shelf and found a 567704.

That motor is still in one piece sitting under a bench. Too bad the guy that owns it thinks it's still worth $6000.
