View Full Version : WAY OT. Little Baby Merc question

Greets and beers on this fine summer night!
No 2.5s or 100 MPH here, but I'd appreciate some Merc info from folks who are so inclined.
I've got a line on a little 12 ft Tracker jon-boat shuttle-craft to get me on the water when I don't want to take the battleship out.
It's got a 2000 Merc 5 horse that's being sold as left-over brand new. (I'm gettin' it from Bass Pro Shop)
Honestly, I just put a deposit on the whole thing over the phone and I haven't even seen it yet.
No worries, it's all good and it'll do me fine, but my understanding so far is that it has a built in 1.5 gallon tank.
Beyond the fact that Bass Pro Shop has "brand new, never used" 4 year old motors laying around, my question is:
Does that motor/model have a gas line fitting so I can hook up your basic 5 gallon external tank?
Thanks for your help!

According to my literature, that engine does have a connector for an external tank.

Mucho appreciado...
Gotta love a new boat, even if it's just a beer-runner.
We've got 4 weeks left if we're lucky for the water up here... gotta make every day count!
Thanks again,
'zeeya round...

Merc sells the 5 hp in two versions, or at least they did that year.
They have one with a gas tank, and one without a gas tank.
If you get the one without a gas tank, then it for sure comes standard with an external gas tank connector.
If you get the one with a gas tank built in, the external gas tank connector was an option.
It could have both, but mine just has a black plug where the connector should be and a gas tank built in. I think I can troll on a full tank of gas for almost 5 hours. And I bring along a small 1 gallon container of mixed oil & gas, for the just in case I run out, and don't want to oar myself back in.
I do wish I would have gotten the 6 hp as it has a twin cylinder, and is alot smoother, you will see when your trolling with the 5 hp, it is very jerky, and you cannot let go of the handle, or it will turn on you because of the little one cylinder.

Mine has both the internal tank and fitting for external, with a little valve, but mine is an 01 or 02

Yes, I tighten the steering connection with the spring on there, and next thing you know, it is loose again. About 20 minutes and it was loose. And I would tighten it hard.
The only thing I was thinking about doing was using some loc tite and making it fine to steer but tight enough that when you troll it will not move.

Greg, not yet, may have a line on a 15, but a few things changed, My wife and I talked about putting our cruiser up for sale because eventually we would like a bigger one, so I just cleaned our 25 flybridge (which sits in the harbor) up a little and put a for sale sign on it. We figured it would take a year or so to sell it as I was asking top dollar, granted mine is one of the cleanest around but it sold in less than a week, we had plans to go out in it this weekend, but the guy buying it is picking it up in an hour or so
But I am keeping my inflatable for now, just no good way to use it. Ironically, I told a friend that I sold it and what we wanted next, he knew of one and we are going to look at it tonite, crazy stuff indeed.
So the short of the story is, I will probably wait until I see what we run across with our bigger boat search, Thanks Scott
