This morning one of my associated came to me and showed me a newpaper clipping from the Winston Salem Journal. It showed the fatal crash of Joe Barnes down in Tennessee. There was no article just a horrific picture of Joe seconds before the end......with a caption of "Deadly Crash on the River". The small caption below mentioned Joe's name, his boat and his hometown and that racing was cancelled for the rest of the day.....

I didnt know Joe. He was just another fellow boat racer. I am APPALLED with a newpaper printing such a horrific picture for theie viewer pleasure.......you dont see pictures of NASCAR CRASHES PRINTED showing the actual body of the driver before his death......

I called the newspaper and expressed my anger.......the person I spoke with wasnt familiar with the picture but then took a look at it and said that was in very poor taste for the newspaper to print such a picture.....

The damage is done.....I believe that the newspaper owes the family an apology along with printing a feature about Joe and his life.....that is the least they could do....they probably thought since Winston Salem is far from Tennessee that nobody would be offended.........wrong.....

The person I spoke with names is Terry Oberle. His number is 336-727-7211 extension 7321. How bout a massive scream and fly protest phone chain to protest their action and demand immediate resolve.

I completely agree with you. What the paper did was in very bad taste. Sometimes I think the media is composed of people with no cooth or emotion. What a terrible picture for the family to see! What if a child were to open the paper and see that picture? It could scar them for life! My condolences and prayers go out to the family of this man. The paper should print a public apology to the family as well as a story about Joe.

I assume you mean the Owensboro, Ky paper which did have a picture of the boat in the air before the crash and a story with background info on Joe and the race. That picture and the article were as well done as such a tragedy can be. Joe had raced for about 20 years and was one of the most competive people on the course. He would help you get your problems straightened out on the bank and kick your butt on the track. He ran an 8 second jet boat out of the back of his pickup. He will be surely missed by both his friends and competitors.

It is a tragity...

LIVERMORE, Ky. A Tennessee man died today after he was ejected from his boat at hydroplane races on the Green River in western Kentucky.

McLean County Deputy Coroner Lee Muster says 59-year-old Joe Barnes Senior of Ripley, Tennessee, died instantly at 2:05 p-m (central time) when his boat flipped in the air during a quarter-mile qualifying race.

It happened at the ninth annual Thunder on the Green in Livermore, and racing was canceled for the rest of the day. Kentucky Drag Boat Association President Roger Austin says the finals will be held tomorrow, with the 75-hundred-dollar purse going to Barnes' family.

Austin says another boat that was racing at the time was not involved in the accident. He says speed was a factor in Barnes' crash.
