Couple SKEGger ??

Whats the deal with skeg depth? How does this work?
I know allison cut skegs are bad on STVs but wondering why a Vee hull can run a shorter skeg.

What would happen if a twin counter rotating rig lost one or both skegs? Would it matter? Can they cut their skegs shorter? Or eliminate them?
