View Full Version : 4 pedal vs. 5 pedal drag cages
i was recently told by a mechanic in the outboard business for 40 years who drag races that the 5 pedal reed cages punched out to drag spects would out flow the 4 p.r.c. with the neopreme. there is an extra 1/4'' cross section in the 5 pedal that restricts flow, however the 5's tips can be made to flow better because they are aluminum and workable. this goes against my practical thinking that the 5's will out flow the 4's. i would appreciate the help of someone that has experienced this.
thanks,
ron

Ron , I run a set of the 4 pedal cages that have been cut out to 2 pedal . Using a set of carbon viber reed made by Tony Dougas of T.D.R . Can't tell you any exact gains , never dynoed this motor . Tony told me when he made these reeds for me that they would not last , so he also made me a set of Fiberglass ones . That was 6 years ago ,and they where still running in this motor when it finaly blew up . Think there going in the next one too . Any way ,I preffer the rubber cages . Rich Martin 018

4'z surpass tha 5'z for idle, and ability to flow more air...Sum ov tha "Big Boyz" run tha big 5peddle(7peddle replacements), and sum run tha 7 peddle HP mercs, and both say thiers are quicker!!!...So that tellz ya that what ever ya mota likes, iz what workz best!!...U kan cut the 5 peddle stockies to out flow tha 4 peddle's, but U will thin them, and they bekum fragile...Tha rubber ones will also break if over tightened, and even sum have broke wit proper torque...
If U runn'in carbs, the 5's seem to have better draw than tha 4's, so the 5 keep up velosity, so that meenz they are keep'in tha expansion area down behind tha carbs, so in tha long run, tha stock 5 peddles will have less flowing capasity than the 4's...EFI don't care!!...Wayne taylors giant blocks work wit EFI, and they wuz juss too big for carbs...REX
wotjohn ,what setup are you running? did you loose alittle right out of the hole? i am only running a 150 efi on a 97 procraft.
thanks,
ron
t-rex i take that the 5 +7 pedal you are talking about are longer than the 4+5 pedal merc. put in some of the 150, 175 and 200's.

the motor I run was 175 carb but I change the port timming rejetted the carbs ported intake and exhaust I run a a pice adapater plate with a drag turner on a 15 inch mid cut heads to have 150 psi. Change 40 amp to 16 amp with alumn fly wheel.also set timming to 25 deg I run 1/87 gears with 29p prop I turn the motor 7400 RPMS.The boat its on is a 4 seater mirage. The reeds came out of a jet boat motor.I did not loose any bottom end.
