I suppose if you consider white knuckling the wheel at 75 fun, then yes, you get more fun per mph, and even better, you don't need as much of that expensive horsepower to have you fun since you only need to do 70, not 100.
THE HOSER

NO OFFENSE BUT I'D LOVE SET EITHER OF YOU GUYS BEHIND THE WHEEL OF MY SKATER AT 100MPH IN FIVE FOOT WAVES AND THEN SEE IF YOUR OPINION OF WHAT TAKES SKILL CHANGES.I'VE DRIVEN THEM ALL AND AT SPEED THEY ALL TAKE SKILL.

I REALLY DON'T EVEN NOTICE THAT I HAVE TO DRIVE MY BOAT. IT A PROVEN FACT THAT SKATERS ARE IDIOT PROOF. MOST FIRST TIME SPEED BOATERS BUY SKATER BECAUSE ANYONE COULD DRIVE THEM. WHAT FUN IS THAT, A BOAT THAT DRIVES ITSELF? IT ALSO BETTER BE FAST IT A TUNNEL. WHY DID THEY STOP SELLING THE 21 AND 24? MAYBE BECAUSE THEY ROLL, BECAUSE PEOPLE THEY BUY THEM CAN'T DRIVE!!!
blkmtrfan
08-20-2004, 01:39 PM
No Skater (or STV) Slam by me I think they are awsome and deserve respect, I just like driving and riding in V-bottoms better, they feel more like a "boat" to me, But what do I know the older I get the more my mind plays tricks on me, LOL
So for me V = more fun no mater the speed ;)

I'M NOT SAYING THERE BAD BOATS, I WOULD LIKE A 28. ALL I AM SAYING THEY ARE EASY TO DRIVE, BUT EVERY BOAT HAS A DOWN FALL.
I HATE WHEN PEOPLE SAY V-BOTTOMS SUCK BECAUSE THEY DON'T GET A CHANCE TO LEARN HOW TO DRIVE THEM.

I own a Shadow with a 300 pro max, and a 21 Skater with a 300. The Shadow takes alot seat time to get to drive right( chimewalking the way it did). In the other aspect, the Skater is alot fun in a straight line( along as you don't get crazy with the trim button), its no good for turning. For a eveyday boat, the V is better hands down. For all out speed nothing beats a cat. For rough water nothing beats a cat. My wife would testify to that. And after talking to Mike(At 100 plus), that was my exact reason for getting one. Just throwing my .02 in. Chuck.

08-20-2004, 03:30 PM
Beer30 good summation ;)
I love speed, we all do I am sure, but there is a bunch of fun to be had besides going fast in a straight line ;)
BTW how about some info on the 24' going 100 mph in 5 footers :D
at100plus
08-20-2004, 03:35 PM
Here's what it boils down to for me. I don't need to make sharp turns, if I want to do that I'll get a go cart or something.
My wife doesn't mind going fast but she hates going fast when it scares the crap out of her. She also will not accept a boat that pounds or slaps hard.
The 21 Skater rides like it's on a pillow in very choppy waters never a hard hit, and I get to go fast. I look forward to an even better ride in a 24 Skater some day soon. I have no desire to manhandle the steering wheel to keep my boat on the pad. One man's fun is another man's nightmare I guess.
In my opinion, cats look alot faster too. My Skater got alot more attention than my Superboat. To the untrained eye, a Superboat looks just like a Bayliner.
I used to just sit on the dock and look at the Skater. Never got that 'feeling' with any of my V hulls.
blkmtrfan
08-20-2004, 03:48 PM
I agree that keeping the wife happy is integral to fun boating ;)
Mine prefers the V-bottoms, quite a few of our friends have tunnels and cats and she seems to like the Activator best, that being said she likes to ride no faster than 60 (unless she has had a few "cool cans" to raise the rev limit) regardless of the type of hull. Not because of any bad ride conditions, that is just where she feels comfortable.
The beauty of any of this is that we are all fortunate enough to have cool boats and make such a choice. We also can appreciate what out fellow S&Fers are doing. If we all had the same boat it would be pretty boing indeed ;)
BTW Mike how soon till you get a 24? Are you going with twins or a single like that red and white one?
Also I would love one of those 39 skater V's

Mike, you are right; I pull in my driveway and sit in my truck looking at the Skater. But it's funny, I would pull up somewhere with the Shadow and got alot of comments from people on the dock. I guess because of the custom paint job!!! But I go places with the Skater, people look but don't say anything unless they are boat purist. It's a crazy thing. Chuck.

Blkmtrfan - have you or your wife ever ridden in a cat?
I really can't imagine how a woman would prefer getting beat up from below on a V.
Chuck you can attest to the difference in attitude from the ol' lady when going from a V to a cat right?
Your purple shadow only got looks because the paint was completely off the wall.
A white Superboat looks like any other white boat. I never saw a Catamarin Bayliner or Proline.
When I see a Superboat coming at me at high speed, my first thought is, "wow that fisherman is moving pretty good"

Yes, I have been in and also driven several, getting beat up in a V is realative I guess, if it gets too rough, just slow down. You can still get in trouble in a cat as well. Like I said right now 60 is her lucky number, she has been over 100 in a cat (the one that Brad Z just redid) and honestly she didn't like it that much. Heck I feel lucky that she at least loves boating, I am not going to press my luck and make her go 100 all the time :D

My wife's been 90 in the Allison....and loved every minute of it. I just have a personal rule against going faster with a passenger.
One comment/observation. Are you guys talking about turning at high speed? like 90 and higher? If that is the case I don't see my boat out turning an STV any time soon at those speeds. I don't see how a pad V boat up on the pad at those speeds has any where near the turning authority that sponsoned hull does. If that were the case you would see a bunch of pad V's turning 150 mph circles at the races. Just my observation.

MY WIFE ALSO PREFERS CATS.WE ARE LUCKY THAT WE HAVE BOTH.MY V HULL HAS ONLY BEEN OFF THE LIFT TWICE THIS YEAR.CAT GETS OUT WHEN EVER POSSIBLE.AS FAR AS RUNNING 100 IN 5 FOOT WAVES.I DO A LOT OF MY BOATING ON 109000 ACRE LEECH LAKE IT GETS VERY ROUGH.4 FOOTERS ARE AVERAGE BUT THEY DONT HAVE THE BIG HOLES INBETWEEN LIKE THE OCEAN AND YES I CAN ATTAIN THAT SPEED OUT IN THAT STUFF.IT TAKES A LOT OF MENTAL THINKING BEING ON AND OFF THE THROTTLE.NO REV LIMITERS!YOU REALLY DONT FEEL THE WAVES BUT YOU SURE DO HEAR EM IN THE MOTORS WHINING.IF IT WAS THE OCEAN OR ONE OF THE GREAT LAKES IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE AS THERE WOULD BE WAY TOO MUCH SPACE INBETWEEN THE WAVES.I THINK CATS LOOK FASTER THAN V HULLS BUT BOTH HAVE THERE GOOD AND BAD POINTS.YEARS AGO WHEN I HAD AN ELIMINATOR DAYTONA I HOOKED UP WITH A GUY IN AN ALLISON.HE KICKED MY ASS ON CALM WATER BUT WHEN WE GOT INTO WIND BLOWN CHOP I THOUGHT HE WAS GONNA FLIP SIDEWAYS AND I BLEW PAST HIM LIKE HE WAS STANDING STILL.
at100plus
08-20-2004, 05:30 PM
I think they are just talking about cats.
My Skater actually did turn well. I wouldn't go making Champ boat style turns with it, and I always gave turns alot of respect if it was choppy, but personally I like the stock car like sliding turn in a tunnel or a cat much better than the leaning turn of a V.
I'll give Vs one thing, they have cabins, but who needs a coffee table in a speed boat really?
jerry

dam , jerry would still love to see some video of a 24 cat at 100mph over 5 footers....

On a small note, this Progression 27 with twin ProMax 300s (not X engines) ran 103 mph today.
Mike, I don't need a cabin in any boat, but they do serve a purpose sometimes :)
