View Full Version : I need to identify this boat.
Can someone help me? U seen something like this before?
All i know is that Jim Wynne designed it and that it is a 60ish model. 17 feet Powerd by a Volvo Penta 255hp v8
It also runs good :) 74,8 mph
Oh yea The V-hull is fiberglass the rest is wood

looks like a 40's chris craft barrel back.. it is a barrel back, but not 110% sure on the year or the make.. but id say its older than the 60's..

Yea i thought so too. But The dude that owned it before said it was built in 59 for Volvo penta to test out their sterndrive system. But i clearly see the Chris craft in it. A Chris Craft with Jim Wynne Bow :)
But it may be a prototyp of something aswell. Combo of fiberglass and wood and so on. Chris craft and Hacker Craft Was all wood hulls right?

Neat looking boat. Is the woodgrain look on the outside and deck really wood or not?? There was a company back in the 80's making a semi-replica of the old wooden runabouts. I have a brochure buried in some box at home. There were a couple different models. One was twin cockpit. Seems that they were running with bib block chevys. I don't think the company lasted. Their woodgrain look on the hull was almost like a formica material. Yours throws me off due to what looks like pine trim on the inside sides of the cockpit. Is it for sale??
That boat is beautiful!!!!!!!!!

P.S. I don't consider myself an expert on old wood Chris Crafts, Century's, Gar Woods, etc. but I don't think they had that deep of a V way back then.
It is wood! And it's a 4 seater! Take off the hatch behind the two seats u see and there are 2 more.
Not currently for sale. I love it to much:)

Looks to me like maybe a prototype of the Ghost Rider that was built by Maritime Machine, though larger.. Wynne also built some race boats this size about this time..they looked very similar to this one..You may also notice some Donzi influence in this boat..
Check out "Ocean Race" by John Crouse..you may find it in that book..

That boat is absolutely beautiful, but I'm with TripleDude on the deep V in the 50's. I'd have guessed late 60's at the earliest, and probably newer than that. I also find 74.8 impossible to believe with a 225 horsepower sterndrive.
In any case, great boat................. thanks for sharing it.

I love old wood boats, That looks sweet! My dad had a mid 50's Chris Craft runabout and the bottom of that thing was damn near flat . There was a guy up here in Fenton that restored old wood boats for years and I never saw one there with that deep a V . What gearcase are you running with that Volvo? I've never seen one run that good.

at least 100 companys in the USA that build wood boats today, and that does not include the thousands of individuals who have made some really nice boats in the shop or garage. That's likely where your boat came from.
Of all of the original wood boat companies that built wooden boats, only a handful build in wood today. Chris Craft, Century, Dodge, etc. are not on that list. Lymann and Aristo-Craft come to mind, and perhaps a few others.

page before 321 (in pictorial section) in "Iron Fist" shows Jim Wynne in a 16 foot Ray Hunt designed deep-vee with volvo-penta power. Lines are not all the same, particularly the transom, but your boat may be a later generation. Pic is from 1959.

I thought 74.8 mph was a pretty big number myself. But the speedometer is probably out of a 59 Ford.;)

check out the lines on Ghost Rider
http://www.cowesclassic.com/1966winner.htm
Hell..just ask Brownie..he probably helped him build it..
I got comfirmed from a swede, that it is a hybrid of a old chris craft base hull that Wynne designed a new bottom for mid/ late 60's. And they spendt a lot of time carving and cutting to fit it to the original wood hull, It was done for Volvo as a test boat for various testing of drives and motors. And i must appologice for claiming it to be a full wood boat, from the water and up to the deck it's epoxy laminated, only the top of it is wood. I just bought it so i haven't been able to check it out fully yet ,but i did now.
But still,I love it.. One of a kind.. Makes people turn their heads, and hold their ears :)
Really No lie. It does 65 knots gps!! It is much lighter than a all wooden boat Weighs around 1800
I belive it to be a SX outdrive 1:51 or 1:41 Can't remember right now.
And yea the Ghostrider is very similar to it in many ways!
I got a Master Miami too. Also a Wynne creation and the bottom is very similar. One of the nicest looking Daycruisers in Norway :)

gotta apoligize to the limeys..Shead built Ghost Rider..not Maritime..which was really the Maritime built by Alliance owned by Merrick Lewis..the first aluminum ocean race boat..they built Broad Jumper too...foggy..still foggy, need another glass of wine...Kerry didn't win yet , right? God save us all...what day is this? I need consolation...perhaps a nice 30 year old blonde psychologist is out there...
anyway..when you compare Wynnes early stuff, they all look like this boat, including the first Donzi prototype..Walt Walters was also in on these designs..Walt also designed the Fino, who I also worked for..a classic to this day, selling for 3 times what they did new...30 feet, same lines...
Finally worked it out!
It's called Wyn Mille I And is a one of a kind boat
That was kinda cool :)

That boat has timeless beauty. It looks like a fine piece of furniture. Its like a Stienway for the water.

Actualy Souter Marine of Cowes built Ghost Rider, nothing to do with Don Shead. design was I think Wynne+someone.
That boat does look fantastic, but I'll eat my hat if it does 70mph.
PS. 351 BB! so is that a Cleveland? the 351 Windsor, which both Volvo and Merc used late 70's is a SB, this motor (Windsor) is very popular in ski boats.
They also used the 302 Windsor. Volvo claimed 192hp for the 302ci, and 231hp for the 351ci.
Back then they came on the 280 drive
U gotta bare with me! I just got it u know and are digging up info on the way! I now heard the engine is a 1986 mod.

I thought the standard Volvo fitment of 351W was 76-78
Ur probably right too, i don't know! I just tell u what i hear! And then i go on with what u guys say and dig deeper.
Ur helping me alot really with things to look for and ask for!! :) thx
Cool Boat!!!!
Look's a lot like the plans for my next Donzi. (The original Jim Wynne Donzi.)
FYI...My 18 Donzi can run 100++ with a Procharged Small Block ;)
; so I'm sure that boat could run in the mid 70's with Volvo's E:Drive, their Speedmaster from the 1970's.
Looks more like a Riva than any of the other hulls suggested....... the Souter hulls were , I believe, a Wynne-Walters design.

There is NO WAY that boat is part Chris Craft, other than using a few of the classic barrel back lines. The deck from the old Chris Craft barrel back is completely different, Dash layout is not the same or even close, steering is on the starboard side etc.
Still a neat looking boat though.........:)
No u are right! It's completely Wynne design, The Swede was drunk i think! :)

Just the mention of a Riva gets me in a hot sweat. Gorgeous boats. About five years ago, I spent some time at the resort in C'or D'Lene (SP?), Idaho. They shuffled people to the golfcourse in two newly made boats that looked like Riva's. Triple cockpits, 454 Chevy powered, all the bells and whistles (spotlight, old style bowlight, etc.) They looked to be about 25 feet. I don't even golf and wanted a ride!!!
