View Full Version : Michigan Hot Boat Weekend / Hardy Party -- Who's gonna show up?

Wolverine

Where? The backwaters of Hardy Dam on mid Michigan's Muskegon River. It's always the weekend after Labor Day. The Michigan Hot Boat Assn. meets at Brower Park in Mecosta County. Tons of fast boats show up from all over Michigan and even some boats from neighboring states.
Consumers beach, near Hardy Dam is the big party spot for many of the larger boats, while most of the high performance V-bottoms and fast tunnels will head to the sandbars near US-131. There's sure to be some racing action in the late afternoon at the sandbar.
If you have a hot boat and live in or near Michigan, don't miss this one!!
WHO'S SHOW'IN UP and WITH WHAT???

I'll be there with my trusty old Mirage with 225 promax power.

Here's Tom Wright preparing for his first jet boat ride.

I think he was surprised that I could get it over 65 mph.

Big Daddy,
Post a picture of your boat.

Is that twin ( count em 2 ) turbos I see on that big motor? Must be really quick. It should have some real good competition at the sandbar:).

Twin turbo's will be BIG competion for me!!! I'm planin on comin up at least one day :D BD, ya wanna drag my lil ol 150.;) How about the Hess Lake son and dad? They gonna make it? Do I get a shot at em:cool:

I may as well stay parked on the sandbar since I've got you both by 75 and 125 hp.;)
I talked to Jim Sr. a week ago and he didn't know if they would be coming to Hot Boat this year. They're getting ready for Jasper. Can't run the juice at Jasper so it's not hooked up. Probably wouldn't be much of a race against the red allison without it.

Sweet!! I'll bring my tunnel with 25 on it too!! Don't make me bring out my Mom's boat too, it does 38 in the quarter and top end!:D Is Saturday going to be the drag racing day? I don't want to miss it for anything. Yes it's twin turbo around 1300 hp he said. It was quick, we did a short blast and hit right around 90 very quickly. I wasn't used to the noise and no lid (LOL). Plus it was kind of choppy that day. Tom

I will be there. Pic is of last year at the sand bar. I am 3rd boat in, blue/teal/gray Daytona next to Goerges "G SPOT" obsession.

As a note for all who may show that was not there last year. When you leave Brower park to go up River basically around the first turn at the park it turns NO WAKE, so be careful. That section was posted very little last year and they were writing tickets and watching from shore for registration numbers. Also once up river, cops on jet skis are the normal thing so be prepared for that too. They were ok as long as you were not speeding near anyone but they didnt hesitate to write tickets for that either. But it was a GREAT time in a beauitful area. I am looking for another boat possibly a 23 ft Daytona or so, 20,000 or less, I/O or whatever so if anyone knows of anything keep me informed. MIne is for sale in the forum and classifieds, check it out.

At least mine is close to 150....cubic inches:D Hmmm, I'll have to call Sr. and see if they'll come over. My reeds had holes big enough to stick my finger thru by the time we ran last year:eek:

The Mecosta County Marine Patrol officers are actually very tolerant of the high performance boats that roam the river between Brower and US-131 on Hot Boat weekend or any other day for that matter. If you blatently break the rules while in their presence, it's kind of hard for them to look the other way. It's well known that the late afternoon drag racing goes on most every weekend, but you won't find the marine patrol hanging around waiting for it to happen. They may only pass by the sandbar several times throughout the day, but they do stay busy monitoring around the no wake zones and performing an occasional safety check. I think that most local boaters will tell you that the Mecosta Co. officers aren't out there trying to give out tickets unless they have to. They pretty much leave the responsible boaters alone. Hardy Dam, Sandy Beach, Big Bend, and Consumers are all in Newaygo County. The Newago officers are normally very decent, but seem to watch a little more closely. I have been boating at Hardy for over 14 years now with a tunnel boat and have never encountered a problem with either of these departments. I think that you have to screw up pretty bad to get a ticket from these guys.

We all know how unreliable and troublesome those damn drag motors are and after having so much trouble with mine, I decided to trade the powerhead for a new, reliable 225 Promax block. I'll be breaking it in today. Looks real sweet on that drag mid. Going after my brother's Euro and the Camel Toe. I'm sure gonna miss the drag, though.

Watched Tom Wright run 122mph at the sandbar on Saturday. Not a long run either, just the normal tree off the corner to the sandbar. Mighty impressive. Will anybody beat that number on Hot Boat weekend? Can the red Allison get the job done? Gonna be a great weekend, just hope that the weather cooperates.

The 120 boat can have the top end. How much ya wanna bet who gets there FIRST;) :D But first, I gotta figure where the rpm went????

Congrats to G-Train for FIRST PLACE Lake Racer at Chattahoochee!!!!:D :D :D

drag120
08-24-2004, 03:01 PM
Yes, CONGRATS to G-Train too, way to go! I think it will be interesting who gets there first. Rich S. is right, quickness counts to a point. I know at the Rumble I was close to Rick Conklin in his 11 second Mirage but I had more mph coming out the end, but that was 830 feet and Hardy is a full quarter. I guess my time slip from KDBA that said 9.8 at 137 mph means nothing though. :D I have 700 more rpm now too (same prop). Time will tell. Tom

Hopefully I can get my pistons out to John and back in time. Pulled it down after and 5 pistons had pins coming out, one was just starting to rub a little bit. I only ran the 3 blade 17 and it was sick sick fast from 40 mph roll. Tried 3-4 dead stop shots and went really well, no hops or bobbles, bow bounced once out of the hole and was all good from there. First time driving anything like this and man o man I'm hooked! Sure like to join you guys out there this year.

drag120
08-24-2004, 07:15 PM
Very cool Capt. I'm dragging with a 3 blade 18 and my hops are smaller now. At the Rumble against the current it didn't hop at all. Hope you can make it. I'm planning on Jasper too. I just have to get it to leave harder but we're working on that too (amongst other things). If you don't have the bottle on your lower then watch your seals. It doesn't take much pressure to blow them out. Glad to hear you had it out. Go fast and turn left!! Tom

Capt.Insane-o
08-26-2004, 10:31 AM
Yep I have the bottle. I'm going to shoot for Jasper also. I'm pretty sure it will pull more pitch out of the hole as it just screams to 8000 really quick. Time and some testing will tell. Ran it right up to 120 once I got used to the feeling, did'nt really seem that fast in that boat. Capsules are great!

One more day and this thing is underway. Who's gonna make it up on Friday? Sounds like the weather for the weekend is looking pretty good. I'll be up all weekend and hope to see a few new faces to go with the names. Hopefully, the turnout will be as good as it has been the last two years, without any accidents. Hope everyone has a great weekend and be safe!

Well, while testing last night I thought giving it more air is what it needed. By that I mean I put a window in each side of the block. It broke the rod cap at 116 mph and gave it a new meaning to "rod slots". You can look though the motor. I have to put my spare motor together and do a quick break in for the weekend. Problem is I have to work late Friday and Saturday morning too. I'll still try to make it Saturday yet though. I'll try my best to make it. Tom.

Tom isn't happy unless he's buying Merc motor parts!! It's almost the end of summer, he's gotta get his blown motor quota for the year!

Seriously, sorry to hear about that one Tom! You know, as many as you blow up, maybe you could blow one up on Barton some time so I can see it first hand!
