if it's a diesel and has an auto pay close attention to the trans, there notorious for having problems. watch the 3rd to 4th shift.

casey is right.they switched tranny's(i believe with the new front end)
our company has used ford 350 all the time, pre new fronts have all had trannies replaced some twice.
but the new fords we've got have not had any,as a matter of fact the 2004's we have gotten even has tranny temp gauges.

I have had a 2000 F350 super Duty Diesel crew cab for a few years now, and had pretty good luck. My truck has 110,000 miles. I didnt have any trouble till I hit the 100 k mark. In the last 10k miles I have replaced all the brakes calipers and rotors, fuel pump, and rear end. I have worn through the leather on the steering wheel. The leather has started cracking mostly on the arm rests, but the seats are not far behind. and busted slide out cup holder. In all I think its a great truck. The bumpers are very winpy, If your puting a camper on the truck ya cant do the bumper mount camper tie downs or the ones bolted through the front of the bed. The bumpers will bend and the bed will crush. Ya must use the frame mount tie downs. I have also been in a few wrecks in the truck. I allways win :D Ya can take out small Japanese cars like a frieght train. These trucks drive like a tractor compared to the Chevy and the Dodges. I think the Ford is the best truck out there. Mine has been great. I would recommend getting one with 20-30 k miles, That way you will avoid the depresiation and ya still have lots of miles befor thinkgs start breaking. I was looking a some at the dealer while they were installing the new fuel pump :D

pre 1999 trucks with PSD had crapy trans if auto... im on #4 2-3 shift gets hard then it skips 3rd all to gether, then od goes and you get about 30 miles till the whole thing goes out.... all 3 of mine did the same thing... if you do get a auto... get it built and stay away from factory rebuilt or remans... the factory is cheapest rout but there is a reason...

get a 1997 for the PSD it was rated at 225hp where as 1994-95 was 205 and 96 was215.. the changes were in the computer so a 97 computer could be substituted to gain extra power and torque, or just get 100 hp banks and it gets you close to 04 in power and slightly above in torque... other than that no problems in 230k miles on my f250 which is 1996 PSD with auto...

I have a 99 with Power Stroke and auto tranny. 200,000 miles by the end of the month. This thing eats pads and rotors. Lot of weight there. Also front end components. I work my truck hard and it handles it well. Tranny is the weak spot.
