In a contest of staight line acceleration , nasty do-nuts , wheelies and outright acting a fool what's your choice?

the Raptor is tough to ride wheelies. It has way too much torque and high center of gravity. the banshee will out run a raptor on the course but not out in the open. the raptor will take alot more punishment.

stock for stock a Raptor will out run the Bashee, put some Toomys on the Banshee and its all over with, lots of after market parts for the banshee, with excellent sounds,i would buy a banshee, can get them pretty cheap these days, its amazing a 1987 machine can still run with the new stuff.

Hands down, all round riding you can't beat a 1986-1989 Honda 250R. I have ridden with just about everything out there and not much that's stock gets away from me. If I were looking for the best wheeler around, it would be a 250R, if I wanted something new and turn key I'd buy a Rapter. Down side to the Honda is they haven't made them in 16 years!

Yeah , we do quite a bit of pavement drags around here... The Raptor and the Banshee can never outrun the other when all things are equal... Both guys seem to add the same mods and both quads get equally faster.. Another fellow has the new 450YZF with the 470 sumpin' or another mod job and it runs pretty well.. I'd really like to find a 500 Suzuki "Quadzilla" but they're getting hard to come by... I have two friends with those , one has port work , 220# compression , +6" swingarm and all the bells and whistles... The guy with the 450 gives up before 200'... I can't afford the 450YZF, can't find a Suz 500 so that leaves me with the original two Quads in question and it seems I guess to be a corn vs. maze scenario proving both to be top notch machines... I appreciate all your opinions fellas' and feel free to keep chiming in -- please..:)

Just dont get the frist year Raptor. Trans where weak and 1st gear to 2nd is to big of a gap. The axles where very weak too!
Matt P.S. Raptor is a very very FUN four wheeler!! I have had 1988 250R, Warrior,Banshee, Lt500, 86 Atc 250r,86 tri-z, and a Raptor was at the top for fun!! In the woods and up the creek!!

Now that you mention it one thing comes to mind... One of the fellows that has a Suzuki 500 had a raptor three or four years ago and he bent an axle the very first day out...Cuss words aplenty..

You made mention of the Raptor's high (or higher) center of gravity... Do you believe it hurts the handling or the ability to do cool power slides as opposed to the Banshee?

the raptor has gobs of power to break the tires loose and slide. you just got to get your butt off the side of the seat a bit.

Awright, here's my 2 cents: I've got a pair of 250R 4 wheelers that I've had for years, one pure stock, and one real modified. I've also got a 250R three wheeler that I bought my son about 17 or 18 years ago. I've got a pair of Banshees, one pure stock and the other with Toomey T6 pipes and otherwise stock. I bouht a new YZF 450 last year when they first came out.
Opinions:
250R Honda stock is the most fun to woods ride and has great torque. Mod 250R's are fastest thing I own, although the 3 wheeler version is a killer if it's not ridden real carefully. The stock Banshee doesn't have a lot down low, surges pretty hard at mid range and falls off. The Banshee with the pipes doesnt have much down low either, but when on the pipes the power is good and turns a good bit harder.
I hated the 450. Most everybody else that has one around here loves it, but being really weak down low, then a relatively flat powerband with a lot of RPM on top of that I considered it a poor woods/play ride. It vibrated worse than any of my others and I was disappointed in the power from what I'd been told. I bought it without trying it first and took it back to the dealer after less than an hour. The handling was excellent though. I was going to trade it for a Raptor, but rode one around his side yard and thought it was a pig. It had decent torque, but felt extremely top heavy and tippy. Some people have complained that they wheelie too easily, but I didn't find that a problem in the few minutes I played on it. The thing just signed off powerwise and I was real disappointed in the big torque, then nothing powerband. I'm sure it's fixable, probably with a pipe and camshaft, but I just wasn't interested. The dealer said he's sold several extended swingarms for the Raptors. Instead I traded it for a new Grizzly and although not exactly what you'd call high perf, I thought it was super nice and versatile, and a surprisingly good woods ride. I don't know about the statement that the Grizzly has the same engine as the Raptor this year, but in 94 they were different power wise. The dealer told me last year that the camshaft, valves and compression were different between the 2.
I think the 250R is the greatest quad ever built and it can be made into whatever somebody wants with chamber and mods and is an extremely good woods toy with all the stock stuff, including the quiet pipe/silencer it comes with.

That was the stock 250R Helmut. The mod quad and 3 wheeler are both in my son's basement. I never did find the damn keys to the blue Banshee since you were here. It's still sitting in the same place.
X, I don't know what if any difference there is between an 04 and 05, but the 04 Grizzly I had may be the best all around quad I ever rode. (for more specialized ridin' I still think the 250R is number 1) True, the Grizzly ain't a race ride, but it's respectable on fire road type stuff and the power was surprising given it's weight. My neighbor had a new Honda Rincon and I thought it was what I wanted, but couldn't find a Honda dealer that would take a brand new 450F on trade, so I thought I was settling for second choice with the Grizzly. Boy was I wrong. My neighbor wants to sell his Honda now and buy a Grizzly himself. I had the Grizzly at Jasper last year, but sold it to a friend recently, so I'll be walkin' in the pits this year.

im with you. my moded 250r was the best 4 wheeler i have ever owned. i went to the dealer to get a rhino but they could not get one, so i got the grizz instead. now i am glad they could not get one. i ordered a lift kit, mudders and skid plates for it today. there is alot of good stuff on ebay and its cheaper than the dealer.
you going to the drags this weekend?
if so look me up we will be in the pits. look for a big ford 350 with white trailer. it says need more trim racing on the back and #37 on the side. also look for the black dr-20.
maybe see ya there, daryl

first l had both and the raptor with pipe and jet kit and lowerd will beat and banchee with pips to 4 gear with the write rider, after that good luck with top end, and as for do-nuts have you tryed that on a raptor thats not easy. the banchee will with no problem. as for wheelys l would say the raptor would be best. Ps the raptor all around is a better bike then the banchee, but you will need to change the axel and a-arms and off set rims for the raptor.

Since this thread fell off the board I sold my Grizzly and bought a Rhino. It's a lot more versatile than the Grizzly, and still has really decent power considering the weight. The Grizzly was great, but because of the utility value I like the Rhino better.
I've still got the older stuff too, and Helmut, I never did find the damn key to the Banshee with pipes, so it's sittin' right where it was when you were here, sour gas and all.:(

I know it's an old thread, but I wish I still had my 250R 3 wheeler. I can't believe the money they bring these days. I bought mine back in 93 ish, and I paid $1000.00 for it and it came with an extra block (other than the piston it was a rotator.)
That bike was a lot of fun to ride, although it did suck in the snow. (Burnt a clutch out doing that. :p ) From a dead stop it was vurtually impossible to keep the front wheel on ground in hardline acceleration. :D

We put a gps on a stock 660 raptor, 700 raptor and 350 banshee this week. the 660 went 77 mph the 700 raptor 79 mph and the banshee just a hair over 80 mph. I thought the 700 was the fastest just by riding and the feel. I've never been a banshee fan. ;)

In 1987, a couple of friends and I bought 3 brand new Banshee's. I had the first set of Aaen pipes and we radared the thing at 85.6. I had a ball with the Banshee but like everyone says, it seemed to be a little lacking on the low end unless your on the pipe. The LT500 was also killer but once again, they're getting ahrd to find and if you do find one its beat to sh**. JMHO Later, Dave
