that's says after a certain year, 96 or 98 I think, that it is illegal to modify your outboard. I'm sure someone can tell you what year it starts at!

Carbs or fuel injection? Took a 1999 225 Evinrude on trade need to move # 5 down but the engine is complete to the control box. An 8 on a scale to 10. This is fuel injected. $2600 Can post picture.

Took in on trade for merc want to move and let someone else rebuild or part out. Clean motor, have not pulled the head but can if needed. If it does not move I will part out.

I could'nt give a rats kazoo about the environmental impact if you modified your outboard & neither would most boaters either.
Sounds like the EPA buttin' their snoot into something else that no one but the tree-huggers thinks is necessary. Next thing we know the EPA will require tailpipe sniffer tests on outboards.
What a joke.
The environmental testing regs here in Michigan are GREAT on all vehicles. There are NONE ! NO TESTING, visual checks or anything on cars....no lousy annual safety inspections either for personal vehicles. If it has an engine & goes, you drive it. The Californians would probably have a heart-attack regarding our laws here. Thats the way ALL states should be. If it runs=good 'nuff

If you are tearing the motor down, you could remove the glue lines in the ports and raise them to H.O. specs.

You could also plug the idle reliefs, but it will make the idle a little rougher. Unless you go to after market pistons, try to stay away from raising compression any amount. The stock pistons have been a lite casting since 1993 and won't stand much additional compression. I am sure others here have things you can do to improve your performance.

Make sure your set-up and prop are optimized before you go looking for horsepower. It's easier and cheaper in the long run. Dan

Is this a fishin mota or just something you gon ride around the lake in and show off. With the " motor is a '95" I feel certain the "powers that be" probably won't give you a hassle about modifying it but the '98 EPA LAWS do state that anything built in '98 on can't be modified except for blah, blah, blah. You get the picture, Way I figure is if you don't tell 'em how will they know. Anyways back to your ?. These hosses are pretty stout in stock trim. Dyno'd a couple of them a few years back and these babies are pushin' the 250hp mark out of the box. You can modify them but the more you do, the less dependable they become. just remember any thing you do to increase hp you're almost guaranteed to rejet the carbs. These motors don't like running lean and they don't like alot of ignition timing. I've got about 3 (55 gallon) drums full of burnt pistons to prove it. Just my opinion but, unless you are really wanting to make this a project I would enjoy what you have or just sell it and buy you a faster boat. ........Bobo

I hear the tree-huggers are trying to ban the older 2 strokes from some lakes out west, allowing only the use of the newer, cleaner, EPA rated, two star or higher outboards.
