DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. - A Florida man died after a duck hit him in the head, knocking him off a personal watercraft and into a lake, sheriff's officials said on Monday.
Leon Resnick, 31, was driving the watercraft at a lake in the Fort Lauderdale suburb of Deerfield Beach on Thursday, while a friend watched from shore, the Broward County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
The friend turned to get a radar gun to check the vessel's speed, then noticed Resnick was missing from the craft. He found him several minutes later in the water, pulled him ashore and attempted to revive him, the sheriff's office said.
"Investigators from the BSO Marine Unit believe the victim was knocked from the personal watercraft by a duck, which struck Resnick in the face as he sped the watercraft along the lake," the news release said.
Resnick was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. The medical examiner listed the cause of death as blunt trauma to the head and drowning.
The duck's carcass was recovered and turned over to investigators.
Both men worked at a company that sold personalized watercraft. Resnick was traveling about 55 mph when the accident occurred, the sheriff's office said.
Where can we get more of them kamikaze ducks? We need a few of those on my lake to control the PWC population...
Sorry, tasteless joke, I couldn't help it. I heard about the duck on the radio this morning. Sad story...

Had the Duck filed the proper paperwork with the FAA? Was he in violation of any safety laws? Correct me if I'm wrong, but flying only 3 feet above the waters surface sounds very dangerous to me. Where are the PETA people on this one????????????? When somebody accidentally hits an animal they are all over it. What about this PETA-an obviously deranged, aggresive ducked has just killed a PWC rider. What about his rights?

in my day. Had one **** right in my face too. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Came close to taking out a pile of ducks up on Shawano Lake once. Paul R can attest to that one.
When I first got my 2.5 and was testing on a small lake in MN (Lake "R" for those of you are familiar with Avon) I was accelerating through 85 or so when WHACK something hit me in the cheek. Saw a sparrow flying bu my starboard side. Didn't think too much of it until I saw his buddy laying dead on the floor of my boat. Hurt like hell !!!!!!! Had a bruise and swelling for days. Good thing he didn't come at me beek first. Also glad I had glasses on, safety glass too.I get some real nice wrap around sun glasses from the place we get our safety stuff at work. About $8.00 to $12.00 a pair and they keep the wind out. Probably something that should go in the Safety Forum.;)
I took a Robin right square in the face at about 80 or 90 on a motorcycle many years ago. Ripped my head back, Damn near tore my head off. Always wore a Simpson or Bell full face. Thankful that I did.

...on an old highway once, on a Kawasaki KZ1000 at about a buck twenty, and surprized a buzzard in the middle of the highwaymaybe twenty yards ahead. If you've ever seen a buzzard take off, you know it isn't a speedy process. Meanwhile, I'm braking, and trying to decide where he is going to be as I pass through there, and sure enough, it's going to hit me dead center of my head. I duck so hard my full-face helmet slammed on the fuel tank, and felt his claws drag across my shoulders as I passed underneath. I estimate it's wingspan to be roughly 5 to 6 feet. I'm certain it would have at the very least knocked me off the bike at about 100mph if I hadn't ducked soon enough. Scared me bigtime, I had to stop down the road and catch my breath. I kept to the speed limits for weeks after that.

The guy that was killed worked for Riva Yamaha in Ft. Lauderdale. They make racing PWC's. Heard via the grapevine the GPR1200 was traveling at more like 80 mph, hence the radar!!
On a different note, on the way to Myrtle Beach one year (long ago) on my new Z1-900 Kawasaki I hade the face shiled flipped up on my full coverage helmet and a damn wasp found it's way right to my ear area. The bastard stung me about 6 times before I could stop. Being alergic to the flying pests it was hell getting my helmet back on with a swolen head. If only...............!!
