Want to drag my A boat next year in six events. Oil injection removed and ECU will have rev limiter at 8500. Don't know what rpm I will be turning but will run my 2000 225 PM using a true 24 Yamaha drag prop. I won't run over 6800 except when I drag it. Some dealers tell me a lot of guys are running same set up and I don't need a lightweight flywheel. Others tell me I need to run one because of sleeve at top of crankshaft. I fish a lot also. Do I need a lightwheel flywheel or not? If so can I have mine lightened and keep my stator or do I need to change out everything? I would like to keep it as it is but am not sure of the different takes on this? Thanks in advance for your input guys.

If you're drag racing, a light weight flywheel will improve your 0-30 times by a half second.
If You go to the 16 amp lightened flywheel, you'll have to change the stator and voltage regulator.

I wouldn't run those cast pistons at 8500 rpm too often.

The light flywheel is a must. I have seen many tops come off cranks because of high RPM and a heavy flywheel. You have the 40-amp flywheel too, I would definitely change it and you will also have to change the stator and rectifier. I agree with Tony, the pistons will fail at that RPM.

Thanks for your replys guys. Next questions is can I have my flywheen lightened? I saw a post on Jay Smith racing that he can lighten them for $400. Don't know if I can keep my stator and rectifer if he just lightens it. Performanceplus Marine also has a 40 amp lightweight flywheel that I will check into. Any thoughts on going that way. I don't think the 16 amp will be enough for my fishing trips.

Flywheels, stators and recifiers. How do you know if you have the right combination? I've changed stators with no reguard to either the rectifier or flywheel. Also put a light flywheel on an old 2.4 with no other changes. I guess I need to know what happens if the system isn't matched.

I was just talking about the difference between a 40 amp and all the rest.
