hey guys, just trying to find some laser boat owners or anyone that is familliar with this boat. i've only had mine for a few months and love it. it's been stored inside for ten years and used maybe 1-2 times a year. it has been family owned and i've been interested for years, finally got it. i'm trying to update and get it in top running shape. it's a 19 ft. bass rig in really great shape now with a 2.4- 200, with lots of goodies. so if anyone is familliar with or owns a laser let me know.

That is a good lookin rig Bryan. Laser is just a few miles from me here in Ft Worth Tx. They are a very good running, good handling boat. I have a good friend with, what is rumored to be, a full kevlar 380 bass boat like yours and there is another guy around here with a 380 ski boat with center steering and inline seating. Great boats and very good performers. Good Ole' T-Rex can tell you some more as he has a good running 380 ski boat also.

Well let's try this again now that I can actually attach something!!
This is my '81 Laser with center steering and warmed over 2.4L.
She was pretty beat up to start with, as you can see, but she startin' to come together. I'm still trying to get her set up right, so talk to me if you have one!!---Ducky

Getting ready to buy a Laser 380. I'm in Dallas so I can't decide on a running driving Laser 380 with a 200MERC, (see pic) or an old Laser that is sitting in Wylie Texas that was one of Roark Summerford's raceboats. The cap and hull are separated but I think it needs me to rescue it. I just might buy em both. See attached pic

THE SET UP : 225 MERC / PROP SHAFT EVEN WITH PAD / 28 CHOPER 6800 / 26 CLEVER 7200 DID HAVE TO USE TRAMSON WEDGES TO STOP PORPUSING THIS STOPED APPX. 65MPH+ WITCH IS A COMON PROVLEM WITH LASER HULS. I BOUGHT A 20' SKI V LAST YEAR SPENT THE HOLE SUMER TRYING TO DIAL IN BUT COULD NOT STOP PORPUSING AT ANY SPEED. I THINK THE 20' IS JUST TO HEAVY TO CLIMB ON PAD. JP, I know what your talkin about on the porpusing thing....but this is the second Laser 380 I've owned and its not that bad. I can't see why that 20 footer won't come up on the pad.....lasers aren't that heavy to begin with. The one I just bought...(that white one in the picture) is a sweet sweet boat that has been babied. The previous owner freaked out when I drove it and showed him how to fly it. I love it especially for $4750 I got a great little boat. Took it out saterday during lake wind advisories and was sailing across the whitecaps while my buddy was hangin' on and messin in his pants. He was smilin the whole time though. I still have my eye on this crusty old laser 380 sitting in at a marine dealer in Wylie Tx. Its one of the very first race boats that R Summerford built for the Mod VP class back in 1981. Still has the race #s on the side and all. The cap and deck aren't attached and it could use a new deck (which Laser WILL still lay one up for the right price) I'll be inspecting it closer to see if I can save the old boat. The dealer of the place saw my boat and knew it from back in 1990. He's ready to drive it as he hasn't drove one in years. So where is your 20 footer and do you have pics????? I don't know if you guys already saw the picture of my Dad's '95 model LTV we took on Sunday, so I'll go ahead and post it here too.

We both have Laser LTV's, mine is an '84, his is a '95.

Here is his=

Brian, them some good lookin LTVs. Is the '95 an 18 foot boat? Looks longer than 18. I think we need a Laser boat owners website/registry so we can start tracking the Lasers out there. They have a cool history and the old Laser plant is close by where I live. I have met the owner, back in 1987, and could possibly get some production #s. I amazed at all the Lasers that went up north. Gotta go. Will post some pics of my boat as soon as I get them. DK

LaserModVee
02-26-2002, 02:29 PM
They are both 17' 11" Tunnel vees

The deck is different on the two though.
-The '95 has a bigger cockpit, and looks like it moves the driver and passenger closer to the bow, but I haven't made any measurements to say that for sure. I can tell you that my dash on the '84 is rounded and the '95 is triangular. It comes to a point in the center of the deck.

A website would be nice.

Everyone else has a home site for their make.

I thought about asking if we could join in with www.stvowners.com but, not all Laser's were designed/built by Roark Summerford.

Lasernut
02-26-2002, 02:47 PM
I don't think the STV owners give much a crap about us Laser owners, even though the LTV was the fetus of the current STVs. I might have to get with Ron Huff, current owner of Laser, and I think he bought it from Summerford, either way, Ron built my 1st 1987 Laser and I know he is still out there in little Roanoke, Texas. I'll have to get the history from him and get some of my more computer literate buddies to teach me about makin websites. I think we will find that the production numbers of the non-bass boats is pretty small, but I'm interested in hearing from all thr Laser owners cause bottom line is that they are kick-ass boats. Have you seen the "history of STV" at STV.com ?? It starts out with the words "Laser boats of Texas..........." That says it all.....it all started with Laser!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, don't forget us bassboat owners too! Mine's a '79 Laser 2500... kevlar hull. From what I know, R. Summerford also designed some of the early Hydra-Sports bass boats before he started up Laser Boats of Texas. My hull is identical to some of the early 178Vee Hydra Sports. Going through a semi-restoration right now. Want to get on the water this spring. Have some pictures that I'll try to get up soon!

I would love to find out more about these boats. I remember them when they first came around ( I was 9 yrs old). The looked fast just sitting in the water! Would love to see a website formed!

I bet there's quite a few Laser owners out there that really dig their boats. I'm on my second 380 and just got it 2 weeks ago. (been 7 years since I owned one) I can't wait to go out in it again. I registered the name Laserowners.com The website has been born. Be patient....I ain't no computer guy...not really...but this is a good reason to learn to build a website. I'll get a hosting service the next few days and start building this site....beginning with pictures. I'll let you know as soon as I get email established at laserowners.com Then ya'll can start emailin pics and whatever. Gettin a GPS soon. Can't wait to see the top speed. DK

Hi I`m a Laser Boat Dealer. I am located in Wi. The two Laser Boats that you are talking about use the same bottom but a different top. The original is called an LTV The one with the dash moved 12 inches forward is called a LTV II it is no longer available. The LTV is the LTV II was too bow heavy and didn`t run very good. Don't know of any dealer's numbers but here is Laser boat's phone numbers: 430-1271 & 491-2802. Both should have a 817 area code but not certain with new area codes being added left and right around here. Good luck!
I don't know about them building hotrod bods but I think they build church steeples! I could be wrong but I remember seeing a newspaper article about the ol'boy that started the company that would later buy Laser from R. Summerford, but hey with my cranial(yes that is the proper spelling, I looked it up) storage, I do lose some things!

Are Lasers and Chargers the same? I just bought this boat. The pictures of the LTV's look pretty close. The Coast Guard tag says it was made by Charger Boats in Ontario Canada. The ser. # indicates it is a 1988. The Title and graphics on the boat say Charger S.T.V. It is approx. 18'. If they are the same can I still get a replacement wind screen. There are cracks in mine.

I thought that I bought a Laser 380 Ray, but found out that it's a foot and a half shorter.

Tony Brucato
04-07-2009, 04:45 PM
I'm running 6 1/2" setback now. I started out with just 3" because I was worried about the weight of the OMC motor.

It handles much better now with the extra setback, but I've got a little more ballast in the drivers seat than you do :D and I have the battery mounted in front of the driver.

I also had a 1989 380 kevlar hull center steering with the same engine on it. 420 ran 84 to 87 mph and the 380 ran 92 to 96 mph depending on the day. I still have the original catalog for these boats. I miss both of them, they were a blast to drive.

How do these boats do in rough water? I fish alot on bigger lakes when I can and was hoping since it is a 19' boat that I would ride good in choppy water. Don't get me wrong I know very few boats perform good in waves bigger than 3 feet or so. What I'm mean is, will it bet you to death in choppy water. I have been in a couple of newer boats (18' and 19') that made you feel like you were a couple of inches shorter I moderate waves let alone a 2 to 3 foot chop.

I am in the process of putting together a 380 Laser. It is a 1987 model. The boat was stuffed in the early 90's and it put a hole in the front deck and blew out the back corner of the deck. I just about have the boat repaired. It weighs right around 600 lbs bare(it has no floor, just stringers and no foam). It came with an almost new factory interior. I figure it should be about 1200lbs rigged ready for the water(without driver). I have a pretty healthy 2.5 Merc that I am going to hang on it. The engine should pull around 300 hp(without the nitrous). My questions are about set up. With this kind of power should this hull need much setback if any? Also a good recomendation for a prop on this hull with this kinda power(it's just a lake/play toy so top speed is my only concern).

slowverado
05-26-2009, 02:22 PM
6" setback?.?.? Not sure what props everyone is running on them now, but dad always ran a HOSS or CHOPPER and had some pretty stellar results with them.. (93mph in the early 90s with a homemade 2.0 150...)

largecar91
05-26-2009, 02:29 PM
I have some inline choppers but I don't think they will hold together real long with this kinda power? It is on a 1.87 sportmaster. I had a Hoss that was on the STV that this engine came off of that I sold last year cause I didn't think I would need it! That's what I get for thinkin!

Welcome to the club!! Hope you are enjoying your new rig. Like Matt already stated... you will get splashed in a Laser. Both of my v-bottom Lasers do it to me in any kind of chop..

[QUOTE=pearldrums287;1702169]I just bought an old 1981 laser. The title says "Ray race laser" but from the research I've done, I believe it's a 380. I got it for real cheap without a motor, so I'm putting on a Mercury 115 that I'm currently getting seaworthy. I am kind of concerned though, the floor seems pretty soft so it obviously has some water damage. But, I noticed that water is supposed to drain underneath the floor, since there's opening in the bow and stern next to the drain plugs. What is underneath that floor? The stringers? It looks like the stringers are actually above the floor though, or maybe those arent stringers. I dont know, I'm pretty new to all this, but I am mechanically inclined and a do it yourselfer, so its fun to learn. Thanks.

Nice find!! a boat at that age will most likely have soft floors and stringers. yes..i believe you are seeing part of the stringer system. THe center secxtion of the floor is usually dropped a few inches between the stringers..

Post more pics of the interior!

Thanks guys I guess that we will just wear wet suits---PROBLEM SOLVED LOL. I will
be posting some pictures of our Laser it really is in great condition, and we just love
it! Had a little problem with the live wells at first but we figured it out on our own. Had one leaking so we just plugged it off, no more water for the bilge to pump out.
I have to say when we take it out I feel the need for speed, and it performs.WHAT A
GREAT BOAT!! I am still looking for Laser decals any ideas??

I presently have 2 both being LTV's love them both their hard hitters coming outa the hole, get light after 80 so be careful. 380 Ray isn't as bad as the LTV but could still wet your azz. Damn well built to take the abuse most of em saw in the 80's and still run competetive as a lake racer today. A guy won 9 second class at Smokin in the Cove last year, that says a lot. I'd buy a basser if I could find one as nice as yours, beyond a shadow of a doubt. Good luck looks very nice something anybody would be proud to own.:cheers::cheers::cheers::cheers::cheers:

Yes I am going to. After reading about the Laser boats we feel very lucky to have found one in such great condition. There is not one thing wrong with it and for the
boat, trailer, motor and cover we really did not pay that much for it. The minute I saw it I knew I wanted it. I am a speed freak and have been around boats my whole life. When I saw how it was made I knew it would be a fast one. Just didn't know that it would kick the water up like it does but that is just part of boating.

has their phone number. I am going to research this and see what I can find---if any
of you know about them please let me know. still romping on and still getting wet but
that's the fun of it! I will have pics in about a week and then you can tell me what I

They are very nice looking. When I was cleaning the boat after a day outing I found a plaque that said a boat dealers name in Kentucky, how this got to Kansas I have no idea. But it deffinately has not been used much and has been stored inside. It is
on a oklahoma trailer which I was told that they came on at one time. The cover is also original also. But it is missing the winsheild, if you know of some where that I

it still did it??? KANSAS LASER PUZZLED

OH MY GOSH, that is great! We would get picked off by the water patrol if we did that here!! We have had ours up to 50 and it still had more to go but decided that
would be a bad move--don't need to get our state parks tag taken away. Your boat
looks great---how does it feel to do 90? Lakes are so full of tubbers, skiers that you
take a chance of not being able to shut down fast enough to miss one with out
swamping your boat.

You would get locked up there now as well. The place got so overrrun by jet skiis that I believe the whole place is now a no wake zone. Where I live now the state speed limit is 45, so you have to pick your spots.

Interesting information on the Laser boats. I picked up a 1987 Laser LTV last fall. The hull is sound, transom, floor and core. Some stress cracks on upper deck. Looks like a keeper. There is what I assume is flotation foam under bow and in each corner of the stern. The stern area around the foam is completely enclosed so cannot see the foam directly. However, this foam seems to be saturated as water seeps from the sponson drains for several days after using the boat. I am wondering if it would be wise to remove this foam, although not sure how without dismantling part of he hull. I can see into area thru 3" holes on rear deck used for ventilation. Any thoughts?

Thanks

geeforcem
07-16-2009, 10:44 PM
FastLaser,

yup...it sounds like your foam is full of water...which means... it's really heavy now. It needs to be removed and possibly replaced with a different type flotation. Most likely its just the foam in the rear is wet. I'd leave the front if it is still dry.

My '83 LTV is a comp hull...so it has no flotation in it at all... i just hope i don't sink it.. LOL!!

you may be able to cut out the wood that contains the foam and chip away the wet foam... you may want to do a search on this site.. i am sure the subject has been brought up before.

We would definetly welcome people from the States in our marathon and endurance race in Tuxpan. As the Mexican Boating Federation just approved the date, we are at WOT obtaining sponsorship support in order to provide complimetary entry fees, hotel accomodations, and travel expenses for 40 teams. As soon as I confirm enough revenue, I will post an "Official" invitation here and in other forums.
We have to face the fact that Mexico´s reputation is not the best in the media. However, didn´t we just host the World Championship with a great deal of success? I´ve heard nothing but good things from the Canadian, American and Kiw teams.
The organizers really set the bar high for us.
Cheers.

Glad I found this thread. Im buyin a laser bass boat from a guy in ft worth. I grew up in a laser and love the boat. Dad was good friends with one of the guys who originally started laser. We had a 79 model 17ft bass boat and were the first ones in our club to own one. Dad found a 79 model 2.0 175 merc for it and nobody could touch it in our club. The only ones who could hang were the hydro sports and the hydrastreams. That 79 got stolen out of the driveway one night while we were at church. 2 boats later dad bought an 84 model 17.5ft laser from a friend. It was a brown and bronze boat. Its still around but its sittin in the mud on lake palestine in east tx. Dad has wanted another one for quite some time, but couldnt find one worth it and never could save up enough to get one. I found this one on fastbass right before I deployed and just put the check in the mail last week. I am gettin the boat minus motor. This boat is kinda of a thanks for bein there, fathers day, and birthday all roled into one type gift. When I was growin up we always had a tournament to fish or always got the guys together to go fish just to fish. In all those trips to the lake, theres not one time where dad or one of the guys didnt tangle with some other boat while runnin down the lake. I loved the feel of a laser when its aired out and hailin the mail. Feels like youre 10ft above the water and ridin on air.

I just bought an 89 19 ft. Starcraft eagle v hull. Seems to be the same as the lasers, anyone know about these? I read somewhere starcraft bought the laser molds and produced them for one year.

I agree also. Just bought one and like it alot. Went 90 today after adding a jack plate and raising the motor about 5 inches. Having problems finding setup info on these ltv's. Any suggestions would help. I'm running a xp200 w/nose cone. and have the prop shaft about even with the bottom of the boat. 6500 rpm's. Thanks

Here is my LTV, also have a Valero YT, both are 18ft ,,both run fast,,but the Laser,,just like driving on an Ice rail track, very easy to find sweet spot with 6in jack plate, and a sporty. I will hit 100MPH this year with a lightning ET. This boat was split in two pieces before it was in the shop for 4 hours. New Oak plywood transom and center floor section. There is only one orignal part left on this boat,,,the steering wheel. I used the old gas tank as a ballist up front under deck,,,for those 100 plus days against the wind. Cary

Cheers.

2011 SEASON
Thanks to the FEDERACION MEXICANA DE MOTONAUTICAS and the various Motonautica MOD VP clubs, we've hosted soo far of 2011
two races with huge attendancy not only national but international.
1rst serial was held in the magnificent town of Tlactoalpan, Veracruz (town that is awarded to be an UNESCO site of heritage) with a huge attendancy
2nd serial held in Alvarado, Veracruz, which was also the date of the guiness world breaking record of more tons of rice made and free gifted to the people. with an attendancy of 20,000 people
MOD VP Boats competed for the price!
Between the MOD VP Boats was the LASER

STV, HYDROSTREAMS (VALERO, VECTOR, VIKING), LASER 380, BASS PRO, and many more.
Yet again the MOD VP sport is rising, not only in MEXICO
South Africa, Argentine, Costa Rica and Dominican Republic are one of the countries with more MOD VP acceptance and racers.

I leave you some LINKS to the pictures of last race, and a personal video, hope you like them is a pleasure to share being an ex pilot of a LASER.

That bass motor is really about 165 hp,you can spin it 6500 for about five years if you treat it right.I think the windshield threw him off at first it kinda made you think hydrostream at first glance.Try a Mazco RE3 or4 on it but be careful with the trim button.I was wishin this had a windshield yesterday at 111mph.It was too rough for him to pull the trigger all the way.It has run 132mph.

Hi Laser owners,
I am new to Laser boats and need a little help identifying the model and year of the hull I purchased. I purchased what I believe to be a 1987 Laser LTV Bass Boat (hull ID CJM32558E787) with a 1992 EFI 200 hp Mariner. Is it possible to identify the hull model and year using the hull ID? I appreciate any assistance.

Anyone know where this Laser is? I would love to find it.

I tried to post this in the WTB forum but it would not allow me. I looked for the rules but could not find any so I apologize if I am offending anyone by posting this here.

I remember spending about every weekend and many week days with my father on a Laser LTV he had and always loved that boat. My mother kept it for a few years after he was killed but ended up selling it in the mid 90's. I know the boat went to Houston Texas but that is about all I know. For the past few years I have been looking for that boat or one like it. I found one a few years ago in Louisiana with the exact same color scheme. I lost contact with the guy and dont know if the boat ever sold. I still have a few pictures on that one I found.

Does anyone know where this boat is by chance. Anyone seen any others in this color scheme?

291978291979291980 Looks nice, but check the floor/stringers very carefully. The Lasers are known to get wet especially in the rear where all the foam is. I bought a pristine looking Laser that looked very nice that I was planning on completely redoing anyways and when I took the boat apart it had completely rotted away stringers, just the fiberglass was left. They are good driving boats and fast.

Guys I've got an LTV with the race cap on it and went through a pretty nasty spill a few weeks ago. Does anyone know where the molds are to these boats? I'm missing a fairly large section on the rear of the top cap. Or if anyone is willing to pull a mold for me off a boat they have? Don't really want to scrap this boat. I don't need a mold of the entire cap, just a section. I might be interested in buying an entire cap too if anyone knows of a boat laying around.

My son's 1984 380 Ray with a 3.0 225. Saw 82 with the fleetmaster case and 1.75 gears with a 26 chopper on the first run. Swapped gearcases and have a sporty with 1.62's and a 24 chopper on it now. Wanted to try the Fleetmaster on my boat. Haven't been able to get a new number because of trim and top mount bracket troubles. Hope to soon.

Looks great Bob. We should swap cowls, my blue decals would go better with Scott's boat and his red with mine. :D Keep an eye out for a 300 ignition box, more aggressive timing curve and higher Rev limit.

Like a Kite haha. Needs a hydraulic jack for different conditions with very little setback. It's a real light one. My other son has a Predictor too.

Thanks Jim. Not sure if he loves it more or me.

There are so many boats on Sacandaga now I won't even tell him that, haha. Plus he will pass me. The cowling has four straps now. It almost looked like GM250's Progression. They are heavy to begin with. When they are full of water wow!

That's what mine has too. 4 rubber hold downs. Someone gutted all the foam before I got it though. Still it's a heavy SOB.

I had the 225x on it til I got the laser last year. That got me a bit over 90mph. I just put a 150 on it last week and that gets me to 70. It also had a Bridgeport on it a while back... its been around to say the least. Such a fun, forgiving boat and handles the power well.

This may sound like a silly question but did laser ever build a bowrider? If so does anyone have a pic?

I don't think a bowrider was ever built. The only Lasers I know of are the race, ski and bass boats.

I like the idea of a Laser group. I owned a 19 ft. Laser for 9 years. I only knew it as a Laser. I was out on the lake one day and the original owner saw the boat and motioned me into his dock. We talked about the boat for a while and he told me how he had a lot of fun with the boat. The boat was in rough shape with cracks in the transom and soft floors. I planned on rebuilding the boat and was on E-bay and I found a Laser LTV. I bought it May of 2014 and then my better half said the old one had to go. I discovered that it was a 380 Ray.

The opening of this thread is in regard to the sponsons filling with water, My port side fills with water. I had a few other issues with the boat that I tried to correct. With a 150 Hp Yamaha PRO-V 150 it sits so low in the water that I moved one of the 6 gallon fuel tanks to the front of the boat. When the boat sits empty small waves wash up over the transom.

The LTV has a Kevlar hull and is very light.315876I have been thinking of selling the boat. If there is any interest let me know.

I got my first Laser as part of a trade and to be honest I was not that hot on the boat. After it sat for a year or two I threw a motor on it just to test an engine and the hull started to grow on me ever since. It does not have the top end of a V-king or an Allison but it is much better suited to rough water and high speed turns. I now have a second Laser this time an LTV I will let you know how it works out.317521

Did you ever find out where this water was coming from? I have a similar problem and the only explanation I can come up with is that water is flowing over the stern when coming off plane.

I assume you have the Tunnel V boat. Which one do you actually have. I am pretty up on Lasers and there little quirks. Anyway what kinda power you got on it and also do you have a jackplate. There are several ways a Laser and other boats for that matter can get waterwhere they aint supposed to get. Coming off plane wrong or too quick is just one of them. Incorrect sealing around the jackplate is another. What I have found on a few of them I have turned wrenchs on is also the mati g surface where the cap meets the hull. Of course that is under the rub rail. When at rest in the water HOW does ur boat set. If you in fact have big enough engine and/or a jackplate with enough set back in it when at rest allowing the rubrail to set at or slightly below the rubrail it could be gettin in there. Post up some pics of the rear of boat and lets see ifn we can get you figured out

It is a LTV with a MOD VP 2.4 motor. Manual Bob's jackplate with 2.5" setback. I will get some pictures soon.
