I have an early 80's Evinrude 175 horse. It has the high output 10 amp flywheel and all the stuff that goes with it. I put this on as an extra to keep up with the electrical stuff in the boat. This is on an 18.5' center console fishing boat. It has always charged with a few too many volts, around 14.5 to 16 at WOT. This last weekend it got up to around 18 volts and would shut down my graph. What do I need to check and where do I start. I have done quite a bit of work on outboards, so I have more than a basic knowledge, but it has been a while since I had to do electrical work on this motor, so I am just looking for a good starting point. Thanks.

The tach works fine. I found this link to buying a new one. It seems this may just be my problem. I'm not sure what kind of battery I have in there right now. Any of you guys have experience with this? http://www.outboardparts.com/omc/mall/dynamic-results2.asp

The link didn't work. Basically there is a warning attached that states with the 35 amp Regulator you cannot use Duralast or Everstart batteries. You will experience overcharging and even a new regulator will fail. It also states that new circuits are being experimented with. Would anyone out there a used one for sale?
