Hi all,
I am in the process of getting ready to put my '88 175 merc back together, and have a question about the 5 little bleed holes in the crankcase cover. There is a little plastic oriface (1/8" diameter, about 3/16" long, and about 1/16" hole in it) in only one of the holes. My manual says there should be one in all but the bottom hole. Is this correct? If so, I guess the other 3 got sucked out at some point in time.

The one that was still intact was located at the outside portion of the cover. Is this where it should be, or should it be driven into the hole a bit further?

I figured this was a common problem, but when I stopped by the shop and asked about it, the guys just shrugged their shoulders. The manual says they need to be there to keep the top cylinders from flooding the bottom ones. This didn't really make sense to me, as two of the holes lead to the upper and lower bearings, not an adjacent cylinder area.

What are these "orifaces" called and how do I get them? I was thinking I could just make them by plugging the hole with a dab of Belzona (industrial JB weld) and then drilling the smaller hole. Has anyone tried this?

Thanks in advance!
Rich

bleed line fittings, check valves, elbows........

on the serial numbers OC239553-OD081999 (XR4 150) on the intake that the carbs and reeds bolt to.........

the press in fitting is part number 56759 (theres 5)

check valve (press in) 13/16" part number 42698 (theres 7)

" " " 11/16" " " 42623 " "

elbow press in part number 15133 (theres 6) (on block)

on serial numbers OB242885-OC100860 & OC100861-OC239552

check valve part number 42658 (need 5)

elbow fitting to block part number 15133 (need 5)

on serial number OG760300-OG960499

checkvalve part number 42698 1 (need 7)

barbed fitting (by the mains) part number 56759 (need 4)

block elbow fittings part number 822715

as you can see, alot depends on serial number, however the part number for the fittings by the mains i could only find in that string of serial numbers i listed above

thanks for the help (I'll be using your advice later), but we are talking about two different things here. I am talking about the transfer port bleed hole restrictors, which are located on the crankcase cover. They are inaccessible unless you remove the whole reed block housing. There are 5 holes that are 1/8" dia, two of them are drilled at an angle and lead to the upper and lower end cap bearings. the other three are straight thru to the crankshaft area.

I looked at a Mercury schematic and found the part number (66517), but there is no detail as to which holes they go in. When I looked up my particular serial number, it showed a case cover for horizontal reeds, while I have vertical in my engine. Some of the prints show 1 required, while others say 2 or 3 are needed, so I am kind of lost. Now to make matters worse, I knocked the only restictor that was there out so I could show it to a mechanic and get some more, and I can't remember which hole it was in (I was just "sure I needed 5 of them)!

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Rich

hhmmmm

your serial number brought up a horizontal reed motor huh

hhhmmm

you have a virtical reed one on it though

hhhhmmmm

and you think you need 5, yet the schematics show 1, some 2 or 3

you may have only needed the one ya knocked out and didnt actually lose any??????

not shure on this one, gonna have to research it

what serial number are ya using?

got a digital camera to shoot pics of the plastic orafice tube and where ya took it out of?

On the motors I have built I use the screw in type valves on the front half. You just need to get a 1/16" pipe tap and drill the hole to the right size (can't remember but its listed on my drill bit box). To order the valves I usually use a serial # off an early 80's vertical reed motor. Put dope on the threads.

ok found 66517 (bleed restrictor) and in the exploded view your right there is no detail where it goes, no part exceptions or footnotes

My serial number is OB349499.

I am leaning towards putting the thing back together with just one restrictor. Several of the digrams for different 2.4L motors says the required quantity is only one, although the one for my serial number says two are required (but is shows the wrong style case cover). What to do, what to do.... Its kind of like what Benjamin Franklin once said..."A man with one watch knows what time it is, while a man with two is never quite sure".

By the way, I said I have vertical reeds, and the Mercury parts diagram shows a case cover designed for horizontal ones. I don't think I have it reversed, but my manual (clymer) shows a pic of the reed block with the reeds that sit horizontally, and says its the vertical style, and a pic with the type that run up and down, and calls it the horizontal type. Is this a misprint, or am I wrong?
