Sounded like I was riding in a top fueler on take off, the guy was thinking it would run 85 to 95...............

I had my GPS............any guesses????

Allowing room...... I'd say 70 ish.

To pin point....... I'll go with 78 mph.

i'll give him 70ish after seeing jet boats with 800hp only run 80. soo i'll go with doubledog and say 78

70 I would be surprised. Especially if he has not had the pump blueprinted and set with the correct wedges.

I think he said it was an Eliminator, but it was an 18 to 20 "V" bottom, don't know to much more about it.

I was guessing between Progression and Doubledog, we were all surprised................but I wont say in which direction yet............

You would think 750HP would push a cow trough 70mph:D :D

How does he know it has 750?? Once we know the speed then we can decide if the guy dreamed up his HP #. Since he's probably full of it I'll say 68.

07-19-2004, 03:50 PM
My Advantage bowrider jet with stock 454 (330 hp) will do high 50's and on a good day, it'll brush 60mph. I'd say the 750hp jet (and like some of you, wonder how he knows it's 750hp) does 72mph. Usually, jetboat guys will say they can do 100mph. It depends on whether or not they're asked while launching the boat or taking the boat out of the water. The speed varies greatly. I think that while wiping my boat down, I may have even told someone it'd do 120.;)

Theres one in my neighborhood with a 540 in a slightly veed hull runs 92 on gps .The boat was build in the Huston Texas area.

You lose a tremendous amount of power through the pump itself. If it was blueprinted and had the proper wedge and a high performance impeller it may actually run 75-80.

Wow...at 750 hp and only 68.3, I hope he gets there quick. How fast did he think it was? That is the interesting part. The local jeboat guy here on my lake has a 19 ft witchcraft with a big block ford. It has 9:1 compression, a big mechanical cam, ported SCJ heads, bla bla bla. figure about a 500 horse engine. He told me it did about 90. I passed him and I was doing 75. It's probably about a 60 mph boat.

On another interesting note....I saw a liberator jet boat completely lay waste to a Allison 2002 w/ a hot 260 a few months ago.

The jets will occasionally mix it up with the outboards at Blarneys Island and Ottawa, Illinois races. The rule of thumb seems to be that the carbed jets must run gobs of cubic inches with HUGE hits of nitrous to be competitive with the hot outboards. Take off the nitrous and the jets would get spanked. But they do sound good and are great crowd pleasers.

Like somebody else said, it's all in the pump. I've seen jets that would run around a hundred at some of the IHBA type drag races and I doubt they had the kind of horsepower that would be required guessin' at the 750HP only running 80 or less. There was an old Wreight jet on our lake with a stock, as installed big block chevy and Bassett headers that'd run around 70, but every time I turned around the pump was out of it and sent off again and he had wedges, jet o vator (although not at the same time) and droop, in addition to the blueprinting that was done.

Most of the other "70 MPH" jetboats around here ran high 50's at best.

mistake "quick" for fast. If you've ever ridden in a a jet, you know the feeling of the hard off the line and midrange accelleration gives the sensation of incredible speed. The problem with most jets is poor hull and pump set up, and they just fall flat on top end.
If you want to see some fast ones, just hit the local drags. The newer design (Stealth/Earl Smith/Eliminator/Canyon) tunnel jets are both quick and fast. It takes tons of horsepower (no problem here, with automotive technology) and an excellent pump setup,
but it it easy to do. The faster you go (say sub 9s) it's actually easier with these boats than it is with outboards.
But make no mistake, these are not the kind of jets you'll run into on your local lakes. These are flyweight, no carpet, single seat race boats. The typical lake/ski jet is a relatively quick, 70 MPH boat.
The jetboat (Spoiled Rotten) in the picture below routinely runs 110/115 in the quarter, with ETs from 8.50 to 9.0s. The hull weighs 300 lbs, and it has 1000HP.

Steve

Scottie Lumbert from northern Illinois turns in the five's at 200 plus. There were photo's on here awhile back of him doing a barrel roll at the end of a low five run. The capsule detached and went about 50 feet in the air. Then landed on shore.Ouch. His new boat is almost done.

V8,
I think that is the Snowman's former boat, and is a good example of what tunnel technology can accomplish with a jet drive. The tunnel gets the boat off the water and allows them to fly the hull very similar to an outboard. I raced Snowman at Smokin' in the Cove in 2002 during time trials. It was the only inboard Mirage VS outboard Mirage race I have heard of. He red lit, and ran a 7.30 something to my legal 7.15. Don't remember the speeds, but I think I had about 7 MPH on him too. SMITC is a 1000' course.
The guy that's running the boat now is running a lot more horsepower, if it's the boat pictured earlier this year in some FL drag race pictures. Brad made very few of the inboards. I've only seen 3. The other 2 are ski decks with monster motors. A guy from Indiana has a yellow one with a tall deck turbo/alcohol motor
in it. It's real fast, as it should be with that kind of HP. He used to come down here to outlaw race on Dale Hollow. Haven't seen it in some time.
Regards,
Steve
PS Tripledude, SL's boat is/was a propeller drive hydro, not a jet.

There was a guy here a couple of years ago with a Hondo hydro jet that was running 74 with his boat, but was claiming 400 to 500 HP??

I thought it sounded like it was making a little more than that though.

this guy bought this boat new from brad collins outta of TX he has 2 of the mirsge jets. he runs has boat on the weekends for funn and races it 2, hes from down here i thing orlando area sumwhere he ran @ the rbr this year. i have a buddy outta lake city his name is paul wheeler he runs unlimited outboard. last year @ GA it was him vs. a blown bbc hydro. the hydro ran a 7.88@140mph and he ran a 7.33@141mph that is in the 1/4

but nothinh like these boats. 4.90@233mph

Steve Zuckerman
07-20-2004, 01:32 PM
I know of Paul, but I've never met him or seen him run. If he did indeed run a 7.33, that is the quickest outboard 1/4 mile I am aware of.
Maybe he and Jon Wright will get to race in Gadsden this weekend. That would be something to see.
To my knowledge Brad only built like 6 RR jets. If you're buddy has 2 of 'em, he's got the market cornered!

Steve

V8,
Larry Mumford has a very fast Allison. It is not, however, the fastest (or maybe 2nd fastest in this case) outboard in the world. Larry normally runs Pro Fuel in ODBA style racing, and is usually the guy to beat in his class, and could probably give some of the ODBA Unlimiteds a hard time.
Pro Fuel is a non-nitrous class, and it is going to take plenty of that to run in the 7s. Why Larry chose to run O/U, rather than a bracket class at that Augusta race is a good question. Maybe he just wanted to get an ET on his boat, as you don't get them at ODBA races. Maybe he just wanted to see how he could run against the hydro. It is difficult to switch formats if you're not familiar with both.
Jon Wright has held the generally acknowledged O/U ET (not sure
about speed) record at 7.52/156, set at Augusta several years ago in a boat he later crashed. ODBA style unlimiteds, which have to carry 1300 lbs. minimum weight (IHBA format U/Os do not), generally run in the mid 8s when competing on the clocks.

Steve

that makes alot os sence. thankx for telling me that i didnt know. im going 2 try and cum 2 jasper this year. r u running there? my almost bought ur old mirage but they guy that owns it now got 2 u 1st

Steve Zuckerman
07-20-2004, 02:46 PM
but I'm done, for now anyway. I sold the Qmaster to a guy who may race Jasper.
I've been fooling with the larger offshore type boats for a few years and really like them. Our local lakes have become so rough with weekend traffic that we couldn't take our hotrods
out except for weekdays, without getting beat up (including the boats).
Now I can run 80 MPH right down the center of the lake on Saturday afternoon, and spend the night on the boat if I'm in the mood. The Poker Run scene is a lot of fun too.

Steve

they tell me they're doing 90 as I pass em at 65 after catching up after their launch and then drop the hammer on em.

Once upon a time "Knot Guilty" was written on a 73 Wriedt Custom shallow V. Bottom was blueprinted and the motor was dyno'd 500hp@5200rpm(455 olds grenade). Balanced "B" impeller with some pump work buy "Dons Pump Service". 0-51?? approx. 7 seconds . 51 to 54,,, 2 miles.@2 gallons to the mile.

BTW don't buy a 455 jet in Pittsburgh, I already used up all the motors in every J-yard here.

my 2 cents

John, something must be wrong with your GPS . The guy who owned the 750 hp Jetboat said it was running over 100

Who would know better, the guy who owns it, or some little gadget like a GPS ? huh huh?

BTW, there was a hydro stream out there with 200 that didn't have low water pickup who ran him the same day. He blew by the 750 hp jetboat. So if the jetboat is 100plus.. the real question is how fast is that hydrostream???

Very similar situation happend to me when I had my Vegas XT w/200 (back in the days before GPS ;) ) Some jet boat guy came on our lake an said his boat did 120 mph  Well I guess my Vegas went 125 then :D

I don't blame anyone for not knowing how fast they are going. My impression is the average guy can't tell the difference between 75 and 90 or more without a speedometer, myself included. What really caught my attention was when a VERY experienced guy on this board couldn't get his twin rigged tunnel to run over 90. He tried another GPS and realized he had been going 115 or so the whole time. I didn't feel so bad after I read that. We want the GPS not the BS.:D

Always remember there are people going 25 mph that are having more fun than someone that is going 125. I depends on how bad your addiction is. This thread has been great entertainment though.

1. 25-40 your wake is as tall as the sides of your boat.
2. 40-60 you think you are going faster than you really are.
and a jet ski just pasted you.
3. 60-75 you dont feel wakes when you hit them cuz you only
hit the first one.
4. 75-80 if you hit bugs or rain it hurts.
5. 80-90 if you open your mouth you can make funny faces.
6. 90-100 your face starts flapping in the wind.
7. 100-120 you dont have time to notice above things.
8. 120-and beyond it scares you enough you dont care how fast you are really going .

I know some of you guys must have some to add.

Yea David, (RUNWME), I was in the jetboat when the 'stream went by him..........

I don't think he even noticed him going by, but I sure did, I knew JP was gonna do that, he said he was gonna the next time the jet went out.

Not only did JP go by him (from way behind) but he went by at a pretty good clip too.:D

Most people hear all the noise that big blocks make, and think they are the fastest things around, aint it fun when you take a "little" V-6 and SPANK them.
