I am one unhappy customer! I spent SEVERAL hundreds of dollars buying every piece of hardware I needed to build my boat. Every thing looks very nice, but its JUNK !! My shifter fell apart in my hands. As a result I have a nice scrach on my bow. It has always been a bit@h to try to shift with that thing. My fuel fill cap, vibrated loose, the safty cable pulled right out, fell in the water and now I have a rag for a gas cap.. Last but not least..My pop-up mushroom cleat vibrated apart, and I had to pull my fuel tank to fix that .. Every thing I bought that has moving parts FAILED!! If they would spend a quarter and use lock tight and lock nuts on their hardware I wouldn't have to keep buying their CRAP. Thanks alot Rex Marine!! Next time I'll try Eddies!! Thats my two cents!! Plum Crazy !

That blows stale wind, I was looking at a pic of your boat and was thinking how cool that mushroom cleat looked on the bow, Guess I will have to make one like Techno did. This is what makes this board sooooooo good, hearing from boaters about how **** works in the real world, not on a glossy page of a catalog.

Thanks for the heads up.

Mike

Went to Eddies site, nice lookin hardware.

Only have recent experience with rex.
The shifter in my new boat sucks, not enough throw to it.
Took it apart to check out how its made....mind you the boat has been mostly drag raced, and the components show all kinds of wear!! Thing looks like the boat spent most of its life shifting in and out of gear while docking????
Have dealt with eddie for alot of years and alot of money!!!
Also livorsi, and have always liked the service and product.
My 2 cents

I bought about $1K worth of stuff from Eddie Marine and was very satisifed with it. Originally they sent me one too many gauge bezels and when I called to tell them, (I had to exchange something - I don't remember what though) they said since I was honest they would send me a free t-shirt!

My wife (girlfriend at the time) got me a billet paddle and they made sure she had it by my birthday, even though she ordered it at the last minute.

Eddie Marine is great. I don't even want to get into Rex Marine if I did they would probably sue me, plus this thread isn't long enough .

Hey Plum, I feel for you man. I sell a lot of rigging stuff to my racer buddies, it all comes with nylock nut whenever possible(316 s.s.)most of the time. But I will add, I'm usually more expensive than all my competitors, but with good reason. In today's low bidder society, way too much emphasis is placed on cost up front instead of cost in the long run. But that is the society we live in. Every high performance boater should closely inspect the equipment they buy to be sure it is up to their individual application needs. It shouldn't have to be that way, but............. I bought a liquid filled speedometer from REX that lasted about twenty minutes before it started leaking glycerin. I would personally like to shove this well lubricated $300 speedo up their.... You get the Idea.

By the way, who makes the in dash GPS speedometer? I know others have asked this question but it has been awhile and I would like to know what is now availible.

I bought a shifter, mushroom cleats, fuel fill, and grab handle from Rex to put on the Laser. The stuff doesn't look poor in quality, but I'll be sure to replace the non-locking S.S. nuts with S.S. locking nuts and/or Loc-Tite.
I know it wasn't cheap, and this news sucks.
Maybe should've gone to Eddie !?!?

I just spoke with Rex not a week ago about their switch/iginition plate. I like the idea of the blind fasteners. No Screws! Not cheep, 6 switch plate, 2 holes, $79.99. I'll have to give it some more consideration!
Have purchased alot of stuff from Eddie with no problem.
Thanks for the heads-up!!

:D Just adding my .02 here I built my edge tunnel in 1998 and used rex stuff all over it, shifter ,bezels, mushroom cleats, fuel fills ,and numerous other parts. The boat is now nearing 100 hrs on it and nothing has come apart and the powder coat still looks new.Iwonder if these reliability problems are recent or I just got lucky. The important part is how does Rex do when it comes to standing behind their products?

I'm an unhappy Rex Marine ex-customer as well. Their quality seems ok, but they are the most arrogant organization I ever dealt with. Many of my friends have had bad experiences also.

I'm through with them! What was Eddies phone number again?

I've had my Rex shifter for 4 years. It works good and looks great, of course I Loctite everything.

On the downside, they charge me six bucks for a catalog so I could buy their stuff, and instead of a price sheet I get a note telling me that they're out of price sheets but they'll send me one when they can. I called once to remind them, but 4 years later and still no price sheet.

....I guess neither one of get any respect from Rex. It was like pulling teeth to get a price sheet for me too, and then they finally sent me one that's already out of date. I sell very little of their stuff, and only when it's directly requested, mostly because of little details like that.

The attitude of "if you don't buy it someone else will" doesn’t fly with me. After a while they will run out of "somebody elses".

I don't buy a ton of stuff but I'll bet you that I've spent several thousand dollars in the last four years with their competitors, and I do have some influence with my customers purchases. It all comes down to customer service, doesn't it?

I've never had dealings with Eddie marine, but I'll be sure to give them a try and mention that I was referred from Scream and Fly.

Hey fellas, thanks for all the replies.. Here are some tips I have found to help Rex's junk last a little longer.. On the shifter, ya'll are right, they dont have enough throw to engauge in all the gears. I cut a piece of alum. to lengthen the arm and mounted it to the old arm..It will go in and out of gear, but its still a stiff turd!! Take the mushroom cleat apart {the shaft to the mushroom} it will unscrew and put some lock tight on the threads. The only reason that did not fall in the water, was because it fell apart while I was buffing the boat. For the gas cap, I would re-crimp the safty cable on the bottom of the cap.. I wish I didn't have to keep buying their **** but I need all the anodizing to match! I would love to take my pretty billit paddle and smack those fruit cakes SILLY !! Thanks.. Plum Crazy!

I've spent at least a couple grand with Rex in the past. They aren't too good.

The catalog is older than dirt. In fact, you can't currently even get one. They NEVER sent me a price sheet even after numerous requests. Their web site has been "under construction" for as long as I can remember.

I do zero business with them now. Eddie is so much easier to do business with.

Still crazy

Back in the late 80's when I was rigging my Cougar MTR, I bought quite a bit from Rex Marine. Back then, they were pretty good, as were their products. I've been looking for a new steering wheel and hub for my Superboat and recently decided to check out the RM website. As others have pointed out, it was under construction. What really bugged me however, was that RM wanted one to pay for their hard copy catalog.

Sorry RM, that is a cost of doing business and if you ever want mine again, the catalog should be online or free of charge. I then went to the Eddie Marine site and browsed their on-line catalog. I requested a hard copy and had it within a week at no charge.

What’s interesting here is there is hardly anyone coming to the rescue of RM, that tells you something in its self.

I recently set up a bussiness account with rex, and they told me they don't have price sheets. I said, how do I get prices when people ask? they said, call us. That's a pain in the ass to call Fl. to Calif. every time I need a price. Also when I did get my 1st order, I did'nt get my bussiness discount. Oh well, live and learn!

Whats up with the price sheets? I'm still waiting for a price sheet for my 1991 catalog. Bought a new catalog in August and it again didn't come with a price sheet. I called them and they said they were temporarily out of print. They said to fax them the part nos for pricing. What a pain in the ass. I ordered a couple of things from them a month ago and again asked for a price sheet; guess what? They said they won't be available until the new catalog next year. Right!!!! After checking Eddies Web the other day I found that the outboard hose kit I bought was 10 bucks cheaper in Eddie. Sounds like everyone is having the same scam!!!!

Wouldn't it be interesting if someone from REX marine were to come read these posts. It would be interesting to see there reaction to the number of unsatifised cutomers. On the other hand, just requested EDDIES catalog, in comments put was refered here by S&F. Wonder if that will draw any attention?

Just hope some manufactures poke there nose in here once and awhile......

I have bought stuff from both companies. I do not have any complaints about service concerning either one. I have both the catalogs and they did not charge me for them. They were sent without having to buy any of their stuff first. I will say that the Rex price sheet is out of date as well as the Eddie. As far as fit, finish, and overall quality I have to go with the stuff from Eddie Marine.

I think I'll call Rex's on Monday and see if they will send me a new fuel fill.. I will be curious to hear their reaction on backing up their products, that fail. I just spent an hour rebuilding their shifter, hope this time it will last!.. They need to send a instalation kit with those damn shifters.. I had to cut up my stock shifter, and fab a cable holder, so the damn thing work! All they send you is the shifter, with a arm that in not long enough to do any good.. Where is the cable holder?????? If I did not have the old shifter to cut up, I would have been fu**ed !!! Also they need to send a kit to hold the steering bezal to the dash.. I had to caulk mine to the dash board, so it would't vibrate around all day!! I waste more time trying to make their high dollar **** work, than I care to deal with!!. The sad part is, a nine dollar plastic Tempo fuel fill would have not failed!! Now I get to spend another $70.00 on a gas cap!! Hey Pinkie, send me that purlpe rag, I'll need it while I wait for four weeks for my replacement!! Up yours Rex Marine!! Love, Plum Crazy!!

They probably cater to those who need the stainless steel stern drive showers. Hope I didn't step on anyones toes here!!!!
Oh yea, when I ordered my catalog I got a thing in the mail to get I think it was POWERBOAT at a reduced rate for being a REX customer. When the trial issue came I flipped thru it and into the garbage(I mean recycling bin) it went. It was worse than Hot Boat. Outboards sure seen like a minority. Just my 2 cents

I still get a new Eddie Marine catalog every year, with price sheets too, and I haven't bought anything from them in at least two years. I did spend at least $1K in billet stuff though (my wife likes to call the stuff "shiney parts").

I also will vouch for the quality of Eddie's stuff, it still looks like the day I got it and I got some of those parts back in 1994! The boat has been outside with only a cockpit cover for at least two Massachusetts winters too and all summer long.

P.S. I let my Hot Boat subscription expire two years ago. Way too many Stern Drives (sorry I would love one, but I can't see spending more $$$ since I only used my boat once in two years - even though I love it, just too much to do with twins, a kit Cobra, etc.) and every boat tested was $40K+, please. This site is soo much better!

Rex Marine is just like all the rest, trying to make a buck,,,, and that can be expected. The problem is that their service sucks and they think they are the only game in town. Nice of the brass to try and do some damage control, but way too little way too late.
I'll take my business elsewhere.

I wish I wouldve read this before I ordered my rex shifter. I'm already pissed. the shifter has no place to attach the cable to hold it in place while shifting. do i have to make something or did I not get something here. also I read something about it not having enough throw? whats the deal should i just return it?

KaptainKirk
01-09-2002, 02:49 PM
Doesn't have enough throw!!!!!!!
Have forward and nuetral
Or reverse and nuetral.
Have to make custom part for it to work.
Mine came that way with the boat.
Have no idea what parts ya get when ya buy direct from REX.

Customer No Service, Poor product quality and backing, Old catalogs and no price sheets…. And a Web site that had not been touched for a long time…. Sounds like a Company that ready to fold to me. Probably a good thing so others dont get screwed over in the future... Yes the ****er sucks! Mine is sitting on the shelf becuase I was not willing to deal with only 2 of 3 shifting options....
