My old 2.4 Bridgeports charging system developed 16 amps @ 2000 rpm +/- Now I have twin 2.5 Drags on my new boat and the owners manual reads 16 amps @ 7500 rpm! what the heck. I would have to drive around at 120 mph plus all day long to get that 16 amps! and of that 16 amps the ecu, fuel pumps and trim pumps take 10! Help!
So my question is can I change retifiers or something to get my charging rate down to a respectable rpm (2000), I did contact Simon Motorsports but $1400.00 for alternators (2) is going to leave me without beer money.
Thanks...

The limit is not the regulators, its the energy induced in the stator windings. Don't forget with 2 motors you have potntially 32 amps available

..... and you're burning about 10 per side
.... So that still leaves you with about 10 amps to carry trim pumps and stereo booster, and lights, which means you spend all day Losing voltage - not gaining it.

I've been running these motor for about 10 years with the same results. I was recently told by my local Merc. Dealer to unplug the regulators and the system will over charge (tuff on batteries). I've been a bit leary because of some of the other things he has told me over the years. Any input ? Jerry

Get some rare earth magnit flywheels.... almost double your output, and they are lighter and trick looking!.

Danno your system was never designed for the long time pleasure use you are applying it to. The amperage generated is a combination of the stator coils and magnets. In order to turn up and accelerate well your motor has very weak coils. Unless you change the stator there is no way to effectively get better charging. Offhand I can't tell you what fits. Call either Mercury Racing or Rapair.
A few years ago some of the Champ class guys used 2 different stators. One a very weak one for qualifying that has very little drag and another with good charging as needed for the duration of the race.
