how can you tell if a gearcase is for a 20" or 25" midsection? my freind found one in his "new" house.

I'll have to say "about" since I don't have a gearcase at home, but it'll get you by if you're talking about Mercs.
From the top of the waterpump to the top of the driveshaft is a little less than 22" on a 20" gearcase. A 25" would be approx 5" longer, or somewhere in the range of 26 to 27 inches.
By "top of the waterpump" I mean the area where the driveshaftsticks through it, rather than the watertube.

Must be for a 20" mid. This was the only boat related item in a bank repo. Lots of tools and construction supplies. Its amazing what this guy left behind.
