My current rig is a 1989 17ft Sunbird with a 1994 150 Johnson. This boat just received the new motor. It used to
have a 100hp Evinrude that blew after many years of hard running. With the 150 and a 21 Viper it runs just over 60mph. Fun but not fast enough. I may make some mods in the future.

Your speedometer is probably lying to you. They almost always are off. I ran a Merc 150 XR2 on my 16'8" Baja with a 23" aluminum prop and its stock spoodo said 63-65, but, according to some of the experts on this board, if I had checked it on a GPS, it would have been barely 60, maybe 62 if I used a stainless prop. My hull was 1000 lbs, and my skinny ass weighs in at 130 lbs. A sunbird would be lucky to see above 55, even with a 175. This is a deep-V style hull, right?

I have checked the speedo up to 52mph with a gps. My buddy
has one on his fishing boat and we were side by side about 4ft apart running 52 by his gps. I don't know about 60mph but he couldn't run that fast. From 52 I left him in the dust easily. Yes a Sunbird is a V hull but not all that deep. The boat is very light but I don't know exactly what
it weighs. My brothers boat runs 60 and I will run next to
him in the near future. According to a prop calculator I should be running near 60 at 5500rpm with a 21 pitch prop.
